"Faith in Numbers" examines the transition from the Middle Ages to the Renaissance from the perspective of how commercialism, climate change, and the Black Death influenced cultural development. He examines the impact of Cistercian waterpower on the Industrial Revolution, derived from Roman watermill technology such as that of the Barbegal aqueduct and mill. Also covered are the Gutenberg printing press, the Jacquard loom, and the Hollerith punch-card tabulator that led to modern computer programming.

"Connections" by James Burke and "Cosmos" by Carl Sagan are two of the greatest television series ever aired. Nothing will ever come close.

As a child, I was allowed to stay up later than normal to watch these programmes as they were educational. The fact that they were also great fun was a bonus. James Burke is now 87. 😊❤😊

At time stamp 1:44, JB gives a set of coordinates. What he could not have predicted is that, with a handheld tablet, I could ‘fly’ to that location and explore it in high definition. 😱 I could place myself at the point where his camera was and view it in more detail the original film stock. Simply amazing. 😳👍

Not only that, but also that if your portable tablet has a GPS receiver in it then it could also tell you your exact location earth, displayed on a map, without all that heavy equipment and giant antenna.

Thanks again RU-vid. This time for taking me into this unfamiliar precinct of history. Burke serves it brilliantly. The evolution of punched cards is slightly mind boggling. As is this history of ingenuity.

Keep loosing audio on and off. SAD. I remember watching this on KTEH, San Jose, California… a small PBS station. And they had Sci-Fi Sunday night… Doctor Who and Blake’s 7. Awww the early 1980’s

not at all. If you want a pretty detailed history, there's Tulio Halperin Dongui's Contemporary History of Latin America from an Argentine. Mashall Eakin: The history of Latin America spends more time on the colonial period. And for a bit less detailed there's John Chasteen's Born in Blood and Fire.
