James Burke has amazed me since the 70's. His shows, Connections and The Day the Universe Changed, The Real Thing, dramatically shifted the way I looked at science and the world around me. Thank you once again, Mr. Burke.

Much as I respect and admire James Burke, this talk reflects the paradigm of that time, largely discredited since.

The man is sheer genius. Can't slow that down, even at 78. The real things to ponder are his questions at the end that were made to an audience of government and private sector techies who are already uncomfortably aware of the disruptions to the music and film industries, not to mention the security biz vis a vis Snowden, etc. But what happens when shipping and raw materials are all but moot? Will money become obsolete? Now there is a new step towards the molecular assembler with the "continuous liquid interface production" 3D printer that culls objects from a liquid bath with light and oxygen. Things are moving fast. Can you keep up with the future that is NOW?

Wars can be fought over ideology. This is what drives territorial wars today isn't it? Even meeting resource demands with nano technology will not eliminate philosophies and faith that drive the human experience.

This was filmed a year ago, yet we know that there is circular motion in heaven, straight-line motion on Earth.

I couldn't help but be distracted by the roll of toilet tissue on the podium. I guess it was placed there in case Burke had an urgent albeit awkward call from nature?

+Jeremy Sanders I think the toilet paper is there to mean that when we're predicting the future of nanotech, it's reeeally hard to predict all the unexpected consequences, and side effects and synergies etc. In an earlier speech, Burke makes a lateral connection between a nasty shipwreck in 1707 and the invention of the toilet paper roll, and says " Looking ahead to guess at the effects of the nano-factory is as if we were the sailors on Shovel’s sinking flagship being required to predict the toilet roll"

But I guess he forgot to talk about that part, or ran out of time or something.

It's difficult to determine from the video clip if Burke's speech starts at the very beginning of his speech so we may be getting an abridged version here. It's possible he did make a reference to what you said. However, without that context in the video the presence of the TP roll is hilariously offbeat. Then again, with Burke at the podium, one should probably assume that it is the visual aid for some brilliant point being made.

Psycles of Eidolon Thanks so much for posting the full speech! I was hoping someone would ultimately be able to do that. The context of the TP roll solved.

James Burke is great, but he needs to slow down his speaking.
