I was working with James and had him mic’ed up, so I asked a question about his guitar strings that I had wondered about. He not only answered my question but also mentions when he began using banjo strings and the first record he cut with them. I hadn’t heard him mention those particulars before.
Ernie Ball learned from James what he was doing, and decided to make strings in different gauges. The rest, as they say, is history.
