The hype is real!!! This is without a doubt my favorite read of 2024 so far and I personally think this book has the staying power to become a modern classic.

Totally agree - such a special book, such a special author!

Just finishing another "different perspective" retelling in Sandra Newman's 'Julia,' so this would make a nice double feature of that subgenre. Thanks for the review--I'm sold!

I have been wanting to get to Julia for a while so thanks for the reminder! Why are there so many books?!!!!! 😂

Oh my goodness! I have never heard of this book but I saw your thumbnail and I clicked. You've steered me into some great books, so here I am. I absolutely love Huckleberry Finn and Tom Sawyer, but esp the former. It's an annual read for me in the summer and has been for about a decade. I went to Goodreads to search for reviews and it seems like the folks who liked it(and like the source material) said it feels like Twain's Huck and Jim. If this is true, I NEED this book, I think. I can't believe I'm saying this bc I typically wouldn't go near a re-telling of a favorite book of mine. EDIT: Does the book preach about how bad white ppl are? I know we've had our awful times(and continue to) but I don't want to read about it if I can help it(anymore than I already do/have). This prob makes me sound awful, but I am curious if this book does this.

Hi Nikki! I think it would be hard to walk away from this book without that being at least one of major takeaways, especially with it being set in a time where that was common and acceptable behavior. However, I also think that those points are really highlighted with the scenes where Jim is interacting with a white person (Huck excluded because he is always pretty kind to him). In those types of scenes the dialog makes it very clear that they are being treated poorly based on the use of slurs and such, but I also think the author allows the reader to figure it out on their and doesn’t necessarily preach it. And there are definitely points when there are discussions about the kindness that some white characters display so it’s not all negative. But at the end of the day the primary theme is racial injustice and it’s hard to not notice. There are lots of reviews out there so I would suggest watching or reading some more of them to see if this is something you would want to read. I totally appreciate your apprehension and not wanting to taint a favorite book. I had a similar experience earlier this year reading a nonfiction book about George Orwell. It made me lose some respect for him and made me rethink my love of 1984 so I completely get it. If I were you I would maybe read a sample of it and see what you think before fully committing. And if you do decide to commit and you find it off putting, it’s perfectly ok to put it down and never pick it back up 😊

I had planned on reading Huck Finn first but it hadn't crossed my mind to read Tom Sawyer. Would you say a TS reread adds anything? Also a Top 25 of your favorite books sounds great. Or 10. 😀

I don’t think you need to read Tom Sawyer. If I am remembering correctly there is a little overview at the beginning of Huck Finn to get you caught up. I just did it because I had read it so long ago and wanted to revisit as an adult. Also, I will definitely think about doing an all-time favorites video. It would be tough narrowing down the list, but I think it would be fun to do.
