My oldest son is on the autism spectrum. The airport is a terrible place for those with sensory issues. All the people and noises, it's easy for them to get overstimulated and shut down as a response. I can see Statler hating being there.

As someone who also has autism This is completely normal for shutting down. Flying is extremely exhausting, giving up your home and moving is a HUGE energy shift and the anxiety is weighted on the chest. I totally felt bad for her, people are saying she’s mean. She just needs to recharge and be alone for a day ❤

I am a parent of an autistic adult. I could totally see my daughter delivering a deadpan answer even going somewhere she really wanted to go. (She does it pretty much every time we go somewhere) It doesn’t mean she doesnt want to be there. Every single reviewer i’ve seen doesn’t understand autism at all. You are the first i’ve seen who said “maybe it’s because she’s autistic” instead of just talking about her as if she wasn’t neurodivergent. I know for a fact after how loud, bright and overstimulating travel can be, faking a smile isn’t an option. Tbh I couldn’t see faking a smile being a thing at all. I understand there are many different people with autism. It can definitely vary. But being autistic isn’t just being rude, it isn’t a lack of manners or not having feelings. I’m not saying you did anything wrong, like I said you were the only one to see the problem. I just really wanted to try and explain it so that maybe a person or two would see it and maybe next time they’d kinda understand where people are coming from. I always find it strange that people who are all about mental health or accepting people with neurodivergence, criticize someone with an issue for acting like a person with said issue. They still expect people to behave the way someone without that problem would behave. They would like to. It’s just not always something that’s possible.

Girlie with autism here, every single time I've been to an airport I've had a meltdown so I totally understand why Statler seems very cold and cranky. They're usually very hectic, a lot of noise, and just way too overstimulating that you kinda just shut down and need some time on your own to get back to normal(at least in my experience, every autistic person is different), especially with her bag being lost I could not imagine.

Travel is really draining for autistic people and Statler probably doesn't have the energy to fake a smile. She will be ok after some time alone. The best she can probably do after a long flight, a bunch of heat, light noise and socialisation is not melt down in public. I'm autistic and travel alot. When I flew to America from the UK I immediatley just slept for 12 hours.
