James Dowling - collector, author, and Rolex scholar - discusses the ephemeral essence of fashion as it applies to the watch category in an insightful conversation with Tim. In this special feature filmed at Dubai Watch Week, the two discuss attitudes about vintage, the trajectory of the watch market over the last 20+ years, the herd mentality, the underappreciated Oyster Quartz, and much more…you definitely will want to watch this interview more than once to get it all in!

Important interview. Imho an honest analysis that strongly reinforces the messages that the watch collecting social media , including Tim , have been informing us of for years. Buy what you enjoy is most important. Lean towards high quality and good value and dont expect a watch to be an investment. Its a hobby for enthusiasts - not economists. Many thanks.

@@redatticus7606 One person who didn't inherit his wealth, someone who has purchased loads of watches. Not really a watch collector, but 'Roman Sharf'. There are loads of other people who have got into collecting watches, and for no 'investment' reason, and don't come from wealthy families. That includes me. I am a self made person, I have a big watch collection. With some extremely valuable watches , and I love my Hamilton Khaki Pilot poineer, a era correct 33mm military watch, I recently purchased, just as much as my 'feet first' Red label Vintage Submariner. I get good deals from Authorised Dealers too, no grey market with my new watches. Obviously this doesn't include Rolex Stainless steel professional sports models. Luckily I got my Rolex watches before this crazy current situation. I love all my watches, and I really don't care what they may be worth in the future. My children will be looked after, but I will encourage them to keep my watch collection between them. Having said that, I am also completely fine if they prefer to sell my collection. I think there are plenty of watch collectors who do it because they love watches and the value is irrelevant. I personally don't judge my watches as investments, just something I enjoy collecting.
@Jack-is9sm

I loved the honesty in this video. Something a lot of people refuse to accept is that in a very modern future, the Rolex watches that are worth a fortune now , 'might' not be very valuable at all. Fashion can be fickle, and no one knows for certain what will be popular in the future.

I love James Dowling from my time on Timezone, almost 20 years ago. I had to chuckle when he mentioned that article "The progression of a Rolex Owner", which I read many, many years ago, and had forgotten about it. But it very much mirrors my own experience (minus the Omega stage). Started with a couple of Oris, then a Panerai, then a Rolex 16570, then went (heavily) into Rolex vintage, then JLC / IWC. Eventually got a Lange, which I love, but only wear it in special occasions. The rest of the time, I wear my latest Datejust and just forget about it.

Second to that is OP36 with stella dials, especially yellow. The third is Datejust with motif dial again in 36mm.

For me, the love of watches is what makes the real collector, regardless of the piece's market value, and the gentleman's line of thought reflects just that. The inherent value of an object depends on the subject and not the way it is previewed by others. That is the market value, and ie like the stock exchange, it will vary through time and can suffer all sorts of manipulation, like we see today with all the click-bait post in social media with the word Rolex, or not... Thank you for keeping us informed Tim, once again. Cheers

That last passage rings so true about wearing and not worrying. However now there are people buying "slap it on the wrist and don't worry about it" Rolex watches and then keeping them in the safe until they are discontinued so they can sell them as NOS. I really like Rolex watches, but I like to wear the bloody things! I don't just like Rolex of course, there's loads of great stuff out there.

James is visionary. The switch to big 42-60mm watches started in 2004 and came to an end 2017 - the fashionista and smart money is now ploughing money into smaller Rolexes and Tudors eg 34mm precision, 36 DJ and DD, Perpetual, glorious 34mm Tudor Tuxedo, crosshair, art deco dial - Also Tudor small block chronos 79260/70/80 Batton dial and funky coloured Arabic dials are insanely cheap at the moment - will double in value 6-8 yrs !!

Im surprised to see that even James hasn't figured out a highly likely cause of this SS craze is watchfinder. They unrealistically boosted the price to increase there margins and gave the impression that "because this watch is double it's retail on this website, I need to do everything I can to get one at retail". I don't think anybody takes watchfinders influence that seriously but I work in the trade and it's literally everybody's reference point for second hand pricing now. Giving the impression that these pieces were a lot more sought after than they initially were has now actually created ridiculous demand.

I have my 'feet first' Red label Submariner on now. Am I sure all the parts inside of it are genuine to the original watch ? If I am 100% honest, I would have to say 'no'. I 'think' the crown and face are original , but I still think Vintage Rolex is a minefield. Also who is the expert? There are so many in the business. John Mayor originallly tried to sue Bob Maron for selling him vintage Rolex watches with 'spare parts' in them, he eventually withdrew his lawsuit. So it must be virtually impossible to prove.

No I get your point but don’t you think you are both focusing on the wrong thing ? We all know and love Tim for his idiosyncrasies and I think a lot of people with really high levels of intelligence don’t follow the herd mentality of certain codes. I am just stunned that out of such a well done interview that this is your talking point. I admire Tim and appreciate what he does for us all. It seems a bit mean to be just insulting him and missing the incredible content. He is a horology expert not here to present fashion tips.
@yetidh9
@yetidh9 4 года назад
@@theonlyredspecial I agree, it's almost nonsensical to be talking about Tim's personal style. There was no intention of insulting him, just passing on my personal opinion, which I'm sure Tim will take with a pinch of salt. But on the other hand, I think there is a relationship between style, dress codes and time pieces. Tim frequently mentions how certain watches have no problem 'sliding under a shirt cuff' etc so he is aware of dress codes. Would Tim command less respect if he lost the shades and wore a dress watch for this interview? I don't think so. Quite the contrary in my opinion, especially amongst the relatively conservative watch community.
@theonlyredspecial
@theonlyredspecial 4 года назад
@Yeti Well I am hoping he takes it with a pinch of salt, because I am not entirely sure it has much relevance to this video or in fact anything to do with horology, the discussion of movements, or time pieces in general. I am fascinated however that some watching these videos seem to find it so offense and annoying - such as it 'hurting my eyes'. I think that's a first world problem which sounds so utterly inane its difficult to even argue it. I think a little re-evaluation is in order if that is truly the case. That said, I do understand what you guys are saying but I think Tim is confident in his own eccentric 'style' (or lack of) and doesn't feel the need to conform to a set of rules that people set up - there is a tremendous amount of snobbery involved in the watch world sadly and while some may try to ignore it, its still quite clear to be seen. I do agree with you that he wouldn't lose respect if he wore for instance an Armani suit and a nice white shirt and an IWC big pilot or Rolex Submariner for instance but personally I always find it slightly interesting to see what he is going to be wearing in specific videos. Should Tim have to conform and change to appease a certain audience? On a side note, I have lost count of how many times ive seen 'presenters' on youtube wearing flashy suits, fake tan, perma white teeth, designer glasses and a solid gold rolex clearly seen on the wrist for instance (or even two if the need fits). That's a statement for everyone to see. Its a particularly ironic statement when the presenter talking really has very limited knowledge of the topic at hand. So, Perhaps Tim just doesn't care. I think that's pretty cool and without doubt I am here for his knowledge - not how he looks, or what way he wears a pair of sports glasses on his forehead. I can accept people for who they are without trying to change them. So, Bravo Tim, I have lost count of how many times I have used his videos as a reference point for a potential new purchase or to learn more. Happy New Year to everyone, I hope 2020 is good for you all.
