No matter what line of work you're in, there's always going to be that one co-worker that you can't seem to get along with to save your life. This appears to be a universal constant even within the realm of show business.
Hollywood feuds are in no short supply-and really, that's nothing new. Tinsel Town's most prolific leading men and women have been duking it out with other stars since the dawn of cinema. Rivalries, jealousy, back-stabbing, and name-calling seem to par for the course, and the tabloids have succeeded in building an entire industry out of that fact.
Although legendary actor James Garner was always regarded as one of the most laid-back, easy-going, and likable guys in Hollywood, he too occasionally got caught up in high-profile show-biz beef. For the most part, he got along quite well with the vast majority of his co-stars and colleagues, but when it came to Steve McQueen, he wasn't afraid to let his true feelings about the so-called "King of Cool" be known.
Watch this video in full to see what James Garner really thought about Steve McQueen. Even though both men were some of the biggest stars of their day, when the cameras weren't rolling, they weren't exactly what their fans expected.

I always liked Garner on screen. Never took himself too seriously and could act a bit too. Grand Prix is an under-rated film and his scenes with Donald Pleasance in The Great Escape were very moving. His Jim Rockford character was his most memorable role. I miss him.

I never liked James Garner since I first saw him in 'Maverick' in the late 1950's. Something about him that was just a put-off. Sort of like the negative vibes one gets from Marlon Brando, Richard Widmark, Rock Hudson, and Henry Fonda.

I find the different reactions to McQueen’s off the cuff, attention grabbing, behavior both in front and behind the camera to be noteworthy. While James Garner saw it as acting out, if you watch documentaries about McQueen, other actors describe it as part of McQueen’s artistry. I tend to trust Garner’s sensibilities. I trust him mostly because he never seemed to take the whole acting and stardom experience too seriously. Still, you just never know. I had the experience of being around both men. I’d often sat near Garner at Raider games when the Raiders used to play in the L.A. Coliseum. And back in ‘79 when I was 19, I’d spend time at a small air strip in Santa Paula, CA where McQueen kept a plane and flew into and out of. Honestly, I found both men to be very pleasant and down to earth.

When I met my husband he looked like James Garner in The Americanization of Emily, incredibly handsome and a gentleman. He was about 2 years younger than Mr. Garner was in that movie. I didn't know who James Garner was then because we didn't have American TV in our country. I was lucky we fell in love rather quickly and got married. As he got older, he looked like Mr. Garner in The Notebook. We were in love 52 years before he passed away 22 months and 14 days ago. I miss him beyond measure. I've watched Mr. Garner's old movies and his two TV series Maverick and The Rockford Files thinking to myself it's odd that I watch movies and TV series of a deceased actor because I miss my deceased husband.

Disagree. Yeah... he had 'the look'. But, I always found Garner to be milquetoast poser. Classic collegiate theater guy. He did do well in Victor/Victoria as the 'straight man'. Had a funny experience with Garner. Long story made short, I was invited to play at Bel-Air Country Club. My benefactor was delayed about an hour. The pro asked if I'd like to play a few holes while I waited. "You can join the 2 guys coming off 9". The "2 guys" were James Garner and Mac Davis. After watching them hit their tee shots on 10, I commented "I'm not sure I'm good enough to play with you two." Garner said, "We don't care how bad you play. Just don't do it slow". And off he sped in his cart

Facts verse, Well-done. Good researched bio on James Garner! Thanks for upload. This was interesting what James Garner thought about Steve McQueen. I heard once when they were casting the movie "Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid" they first cast Paul Newman as Butch Cassidy and warren Beatty as the Sundance kid but Warren did not want to do it because he did not like to ride horses and thought the movie would be kind of like his "Bonnie and Clyde" buddy movie. Well anyway next cast was Steve McQueen. But Paul and Steve did not get along at all! Maybe McQueen was difficult making some of his movies. Then Robert Redford was cast. Some actors were difficult to work with. Maybe Mcqueen was one of them. I read that Richard Dreyfuss and Robert Shaw did not get along so well doing "Jaws" movie either. But it got done like "The Great escape" movie Great channel.

One thing they didn't mention is that Garner and McQueen were next door neighbors and Steve used to toss his empty beer cans in Jim's yard. Garner and McQueen also both raced cars and spent a lot of time together tinkering in the garage. However McQueen got upset when Garner accepted a role in the movie Grand Prix (a role McQueen had already turned down) and that was the beginning of the bad blood. I think you'd be hard pressed to find anyone in Hollywood who didn't think Steve McQueen was gigantic pain in the ass.
@jennifersman7990
@jennifersman7990 9 месяцев назад
That’s not quite true. McQueen was ready to do Grand Prix and only backed out because he was supposed to have a meeting with the director (John Frankenheimer) but Frankenheimer couldn’t make the meeting and sent an associate producer instead, McQueen hated the guy and immediately dropped out of the film, which Garner did instead. After the film came out, Garner ran into McQueen at a stop light. McQueen was with his son and they’d just come from seeing Grand Prix. When Garner asked how he liked it, McQueen said “Well…pretty good, pretty good “ it was the closest he came to admitting he made a big mistake turning it down.
@kurtthewicked9009
@kurtthewicked9009 8 месяцев назад
@@jennifersman7990 Yeah, I read that in the biography too, but essentially McQueen turned down the film because his massive ego was bruised when Frankenheimer was a no-show. The fact it took him two years to (sort of) admit he was wrong is telling in itself.

There’s a reported comment - forget where now but probably one of the books on McQueen that someone remarked to Bobby Darin (co-Star) on the set of “Hell is for Heroes” that “Steve McQueen was his own worst enemy.” Darin’s response was reported to be “not as long as I’m alive.”

Garner and McQueen were friends.When John Frankenheimer wanted McQueen for Grand Prix McQueen was in Taiwan filming The Sand Pebbles for Robert Wise. The Sand Pebbles production was delayed and McQueen couldn’t make it in time for when Grand Prix started production so McQueen recommended his friend Garner who was also a racing enthusiast and Grand Prix filmed in 1966 was one of Garner’s best performances. It is also in my opinion one of the two best films about racing tied with Ford VS Ferrari. With the cinematic technology available to John Frankenheimer and his masterful talent for a 57 year old film it still gives Ford VS Ferrari a run for it’s money if you’ll pardon the pun😉!

2 things you didn’t mention One of Garner’s first films was Sayonara where he played Marlon Brando’s BF. Garner was extremely nervous in his first scene with Brando and said Brando couldn’t have been more helpful to calm his nerves. They’d often work out scenes together and he always wished they could’ve done more films together Garner turned down the role of Garrett Breedlove in Terms of Endearment because he didn’t trust the director and always said it was the dumbest move of his career (Burt Reynolds turned it down too and said the same thing)

Garner was a very underrated actor. Using very little to convey a lot. There's a great piece of off set film from Gran Prix where Garner loses it with a store owner who is holding the production to ransom. While I spoke to him, between takes, he seemed nervous & "chain-smoked" non-stop!/ Garner was a top t.v. actor, but it's a shame that he was not able to transmit that affable personality to becoming a more major motion picture star! Garner lived next door to Steve and Neile for many years. The real reason Steve held a grudge was, while Steve was in Taiwan filming the Sand Pebbles, Garner got the role in Grand Prix. That Steve thought was his. And he was Furious and felt Betrayed by Garner. That lasted for many years. Garner was a super nice guy and even tempered and was a great husband. He was Mr. Perfect to Steve. And he resented being compared to him off the screen.

I never really knew Garner except for Maverick when I was a child and some films, I have never seen The Rockford Files. My two favourite actors have always been Bogart and McQueen, both from different periods. McQueen was very 'watchable' in his roles. Naturally, one never knows one's favourite actors except for on the screen. I completely disagree though with Garner's view on McQueen's acting, for me, he was a great actor. As for Bronson, I always felt that he was an actor maybe difficult to work with, maybe that changed later for him, I felt the change in his 'Death Wish' roles, he seemed to have mellowed. Each actor was a star in his own right. People have their favourites, Bogart and McQueen were mine, but I liked many other actors like Bronson, James Coburn, Robert Vaughan, Lee J Cobb, Marlon Brando etc, etc. So many actors who brought something special to the screen.

I had read a few years back that Garner and McQueen at one point lived along the same street. As a prank, once McQueen watched Garner drive away then filled Garner's driveway with trash, and watched with amusement the anguish when Garner returned.

I always like James. He was a good, friendly looking guy, that made it hard not to like him. I think most of the Hollywood crowd falls into similar categories. We like them for the parts they play. We feel we know them but we don’t know squat about them really. Chances are there are better people in the audience than the stars on the screen. We just don’t know them. Unfortunately we are all sucked into people in the spotlight that can talk or act. Just like all the politicians out there that don’t really serve the people but are able to say things that sound good but are seldom delivered.

Well considering they both were in The Great Escape together it seems you might be a bit hyperbolic and butt hurt. Maverick ( both movie and series), Victor, Victoria, The Notebook, Murphy's Romance, Space Cowboys, Support your Local Sheriff, 8 simple rules, Divine secrets of ya ya Sisterhood are all well known , popular, and successful movies.

That’s sorta true, Garner made more of an impression on TV than movies. Some actors just work better in tv than film. That said, check out Garner in The Great Escape, but also Grand Prix, The Thrill of It All, Twilight and Space Cowboys

I Like James Garner a lot, but it was well-known he was jealous of McQueen who was the number one box office star for multiple years. Garner was a very good actor maybe better than McQueen but he never was a Super Star like Steve McQueen.

As I understand it, Garner’s service in Korea was during the Korean War & he was wounded - shot in the gluteus Maximus.

Garner was twice wounded in a Korea. Talked about on a morning talk show, and mentioned he didn’t receive a second Purple Heart, but didn’t know the reason. It was investigated and he received the second award. The photograph can be found online

Whenever you get strong, male, self-important personalities together, there is of course, bound to be friction. Try to imagine being director John Sturges directing all these testosterone filled, male lead actors in "The Great Escape"? Now, that's leadership, I think.

I worked with Charles Bronson's neice in the mid 80's and she did mention he grew up poor but had a good relationship with him. She stated the tabloids were very unfair which was not surprising them. I quit paying any attention to them after Princess Diana's death.

Always liked James Rockf oh wait James Garner. I loved Grand Prix at 7yrs old when it primered at the giant curved screen theater downtown. But I also loved Steve McQueen's LeMans in 1971 so what do I know? He used to make this Coffee commercial with this well known actress whose name I've forgotten. Even in my pre-teen self thought they were very smartly acted.

On the set of " The Great Escape", it wasn't only Garner who was fed up with McQueen, it was also James Coburn, Charles Bronson, & all of the British cast, who found McQueen appallingly insecure, childish, & spoiled. They all pretty much despised him. Totally understandable. McQueen WAS horribly insecure & immature. --------

Coburn, Bronson, McQueen, many of these actors were very mercurial in nature. No doubt the sets were difficult to manage by the director. Can you imagine trying to manage a film with so many stars on set? Somewhat of a miracle.

Not surprised at all.... because they all had big egos ! I've heard about all this before. It's also been known that Garner could blow his top at times. It happened while filming Grand Prix. Which I think was one of his best if not the best movies...next to The Great Escape. All of them were terrific actors though. 👍👍

McQueen was the king cool posers celebrated by guys who couldn't get dates in high school and thought that squinting and acting like a dick was how you impressed girls. James Garner was actually cool and always treating people with respect, not an a-hole poser.
