Being of that era, I will say unabashedly that James Gurley was, and always will be, my absolute, favorite guitarist. His sound was unique, utterly and completely unique. Ain't nobody ever played like James. Ever. I wept when I heard he had passed on. Thankfully, we have evidence of his originality and, yes, brilliance on the music he recorded. I recall that he once said he wanted to play guitar like Coltraine played sax. I think James succeeded, And then some. Love you, James. R.I.P. 4EVR.

Forever etched in my mind: James & Sam, long hair swinging, SGs flashing like switchblades shredding deep into the night as Janis stomps, stutters, moans & wails, as colored oil undulates. Thanx for your crazy good creativity! And the unbelievable gift of James playing at my 21st birthday party at the Sausalito Food Company. Magic!

James Gurley is my favorite guitarist! I love the way he got awesome psychedelic tone out of whatever guitar he had in hand. The man was a master of tone and ferocity on the guitar. RIP James. Gone way too soon!

Thank you. I have gone through most of my life not knowing this man's name but always admiring his guitar playing skills. I finally took the time to look him up and read about him. I didn't know he had died and I am saddened by that fact. Condolences to his family and fans. Rest in peace and Go with God.

This man (James), was my neighbor. My brother and I hung out with his son Hongo. James was a super-nice guy. Lots of memories.

He was taking his son and wife to the beach, and accidentally overdosed his wife with Heroin, and she died young.

Even today, his playing on Cheap Thrills sends chills and shivers down my spine. There was no one like him. The magnificence of his guitar on Ball and Chain -- no one could match it.

Saw them in Philly in 1968 - great shows, great band - $3 a show, two sets, two nights at the original Electric Factory. Janis should never have left. Still have them on vinyl, along with CDs. Loved the music then and it still sounds great today. He is missed by all who loved the band - Kharmu Darla - 9-10-11

I think Mr. Gurley was the best psychedelic guitarist of them all. Is there anywhere his music can be found? Thank you for the well deserved tribute video. I've watched it a few times.
