Thank you! I picked these colors kinda at random because I rarely use cerulean, but I really love the combo ans will definitely use it again! And good to know about the gouache! With it having been so cold I haven’t been able to do as much with it outside but I’m hoping to feature it more regularly again!

@@DannySabraArt cerulean blue is also so gorgeous in watercolor. It has a beautiful granulation! :D

I might need to pick up a tube in watercolor to play around with! I find I often use it for skies and such. My original intent was to have a transparent sky in this sketch but I misjudged the color and value so I had to go opaque.

@Danny Sabra Art I use it for skies but also distance foliage sometimes. For those blue summer like skies I'm usually using a mixture of ultramarine and hello turquoise. I love it! :D Happy painting!

I'm trying to choose a simple 4-5 color gouache palet. Did you use cerulean to make the green for the building and trees, or just ivory black and yellow ochre?

I used cerulean in those mixes but I also use other colors I’ve mixed so it’s possible some Black got into the mix. I recommend taking your limited palette and then mixing all the different combinations the colors make and then tinting those mixes with white. It’ll give you a really great idea of what a color palette can do!

I didn’t really use black as my blue in this painting but just to give me darker values.

@@DannySabraArt Thanks, that is helpful, since I liked the range of colors you achieved, for urban landscapes. Now I just need to decide what colors to buy...

@slothrob for a basic set up I like Ultramarine Blue, Cadmium Yellow, Alizarin Crimson, Burnt Sienna and White. You can mix a lot of lifelike colors with that set and that will give you the added benefit of learning how to mix colors well. Then if you feel there are any gaps that you struggle to mix you can add in alternative colors. After that set you might consider adding in Yellow Ochre, a Pthalo or Prussian Blue, possibly a Cad Red and Ivory Black. You can also experiment with adding in secondary colors as well. Always lots of fun to explore colors. But I’d start with that basic set and go from there.

Dog question: It's not realistic to do plen air pet portraits, (or is it?) so how do you choose your reference photo for a dog portrait like this one?

Thats a really good question! Thanks! I'll definitely tackle this one in that video.
