James Hillman (April 12, 1926 - October 27, 2011) was an American psychologist. He studied at, and then guided studies for, the C.G. Jung Institute in Zurich. He founded a movement toward archetypal psychology and retired into private practice, writing and traveling to lecture, until his death at his home in Connecticut.

Crazy synchronicity. Just after this I started re-listening to Hillman’s “A Blue Fire” lectures on audible. I accidentally fast forwarded to this exact part. So you can find this in chapter one about 17 minutes in.

If the images do not contain "information" then what is their purpose? If I dream of chocolate bars, am I only to dwell on the image of chocolate bars, and not to inquire of the meaning of the image? Should I go about my day holding the image of chocolate bars, and not to seek to understand what message the image is attempting to convey? Do I sit in a therapist's office and dwell solely on the image of chocolate bars, never desiring to glean any purposed wisdom that the image of chocolate bars might represent? If the image is how the psyche communicates with consciousness, then how is one to have any benefit from the communication through the image, if not first translated into language which can be understood through interpretation of consciousness?

Listen to this lecture again. What I take from it is that Hillman says it is not you having the dream and the dream (image) doesn't have meaning; you are turning it all around when you say that. You are making it separate from your existence and thus something you can have and dispose of, that influences you or that you can ignore. This is modern, dis-animated, de-unified comodity thinking. You attribute quality to the experience, the event, which is possible because it is a separate object in this thinking. What I feel Hillman is saying is that the psyche expresses itself through your experiences, like a dream or walking down the road or having a conversation. The psyche isn't something inside of you, it is a field that finds expression in physical forms and when that physical form becomes aware of the event of expression, this is Consciousness. The spiritual image that best illustrates this is that of Vishnu dreaming reality. Plato's cave of Shadows is another apt image. The shape of a biological being is held by a field as a shared memory, a consensus reality, an archetypical agreement. This then gives rise to biological form. When this field communicates, it does so through dreams, intuitions and visions but it is more a picking up of their reality by the dream senses. So what you dream of is in fact more real than real, in the sense that it is archetypical, Platonic forms being presented that give shape to 'real' things. In the case of your chocolate bar, I'd say you are looking at an archetypical Platonic bar that has its shadow on the wall in the shape of a physical bar in your fridge (if that's where you keep your chocolate).
