Video Description: "Center of Gravity"
"Center of Gravity" is a profound exploration of balance, motion, and the imprint of human touch in the art-making process, filmed within the stark dichotomy of a studio divided by black and white walls. This performance piece revolves around a series of canvases-black canvases on a white wall, each manipulated under the direct influence of my hands coated in contrasting white paint. As I grasp and rotate each canvas, clockwise and counterclockwise, around a central nail, my handprints emerge along the edges, recording each motion's direction and force.
The project escalates in complexity and scale, moving from smaller canvases to those nearly unmanageable in size. The largest canvas, a 6' x 6' expanse, challenges the established pattern: here, the necessity of maintaining balance forces my hand to the center, leaving a central imprint that disrupts the peripheral markings of the others. This central intervention creates a stark visual and thematic contrast, emphasizing the gravitational pull not just of the physical world but of the creative process itself.
"Center of Gravity" continues the exploration begun in "Absence," focusing on the presence and eventual absence of the artist's hand. Where "Absence" dealt with the ghostly remnants of erased paintings, "Center of Gravity" confronts the immediate and physical presence of the artist's touch, only to highlight its transient influence on the canvas. This project offers a meditation on the forces-both seen and unseen-that shape artistic creation and challenges viewers to reflect on how art persists in the memory and physical space, long after the artist's direct intervention has ended.
