Talk given at the Advaya event 'Beyond Asana: Asceticism, Alchemy, & The Tangled Roots Of Yoga', a lecture series exploring the history & philosophy of Yoga
Talk Description:
Yoga is one of the world’s most popular ways to physical and mental wellbeing. In its early descriptions, however, which date to more than two thousand years ago, it is practised by world-denying ascetics and closely associated with methods of self-deprivation, including extreme practises of bodily mortification. In this talk James Mallinson describes yoga’s origins and its transformation from an ascetic path to liberation undertaken by those on the fringes of society to a wholesome method of achieving wellbeing available to all.
About the Speaker:
James Mallinson is Senior Lecturer in Sanskrit and Classical and Indian Studies at SOAS, University of London. His interest in yoga grew out of a fascination for India and Indian asceticism - he spent several years living with Indian ascetics and yogis, in particular Rāmānandī Tyāgīs. His MA thesis, part of a major in ethnography, was on Indian asceticism. He became frustrated, however, with (to quote Sheldon Pollock) the “hypertrophy of method” that afflicts much of the humanities, and anthropology in particular, so sought to ground his future research in philology. The one aspect of ascetic practice that is well represented in Sanskrit texts is yoga, so for his doctoral thesis he chose to edit an early text on haṭhayoga, the Khecarīvidyā, which teaches in detail khecarīmudrā, one of traditional haṭhayoga’s most important practices, and he used fieldwork among traditional yogis in India to shed light on the text’s teachings.
As he worked on his thesis he became more and more unsure that the received wisdom on the origins of haṭhayoga (whose practices form the basis of much of modern yoga) was correct, in particular its blanket attribution to the Nāth sect, based as that wisdom was on a very small selection of the available texts and modern oral history (which is rarely a reliable source in India). But it was clear that to put his work in the broader context was going to be impossible while working on his thesis. When he was revising it for publication a few years after completing it, he was asked to contribute to a volume on the Nāths and their literature. He agreed and decided to concentrate on the corpus of texts of haṭhayoga. It soon became apparent that this was going to be too big a task for a single chapter of a book and he apologised to the volume’s editor but continued with his research. Four years on he has identified a corpus of eight works that teach early haṭhayoga and about a dozen more that contribute to its classical formulation in the Haṭhapradīpikā. With this philological basis established it has been possible at last to put all of haṭhayoga’s aspects into context, which is what he is doing in the monograph on which he is currently working, Yoga and Yogis: The Texts, Techniques and Practitioners of Early Haṭhayoga. Many of the conclusions that can be drawn from the corpus and the other sources he uses (from Mughal miniatures to his fieldwork amongst traditional yogis) overturn what was previously thought about yoga’s formative period. Although he has decided to present the bulk of the findings in a single monograph (because its parts are all so interdependent), in the course of working on it he has written various spin-off articles and reviews on specific aspects of haṭhayoga.
In September 2015, Mallinson became the Principle Investigator of The Haṭha Yoga Project (HYP), a five-year research project funded by the European Research Council and based at SOAS, University of London which aims to chart the history of physical yoga practice by means of philology, i.e. the study of texts on yoga, and ethnography, i.e. fieldwork among practitioners of yoga. The project team consists of four researchers based at SOAS, one at the École française d’Extrême Orient, Pondicherry and one at the Maharaja Man Singh Pustak Prakash, Jodhpur. More information can be found on the project’s website.
He has been interviewed on yoga for BBC Radio on Beyond Belief and for the Secret History of Yoga.
More information about Dr Mallinson’s work, his CV and publications, many of them downloadable, can be found here, and on his website: www.khecari.com

He is a legend of crooks. Everything he is telling is defaming and has dubious intentions behind. I don’t know which clan you belong to? But the truth is here: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE--GUgBvBMuOw.html if you are untested in the Truth!

No Sir, I saw my Uncle practicing asanas ( difficult ones!) in our grandfather’s home and he was a teenage when I was little and saw him doing it in amazement! Very much a daily exercise for him, it was early 80s and he must have learned from a teacher who taught householders. Also another uncle of mine did it regularly, regular Shershasana. Also my Dad used to sit in Pranayams and do meditation. So yoga formed our daily exercise routine of almost all Indian homes except of farmers may be. Especially people who had jobs which didn’t require much physical exercise like, vaishyas (businessmen, shop owners, accountants, Traders (who took these practices with them all over the place), Doctors, Brahmin Teachers etc) did it regularly as daily exercise and were taught by gurus. Almost every household had a Guru. Gurus used to visit the household annually, biannually or once in five years like that and disciples could go meet with them anytime they like and they will in times of distress to seek guidance. The householders supported ascetics financially and Ascetics supported Householders with guidance like that of Yoga to their children and other Spiritual guidance and help in time of need. This is How these traditions survived and that how interwoven it is was in our society not only Ascetics but regular householders and children practiced it. We even had a Picture of one of our ancestors who became a Sadhu, in Padam Asan and He didn’t look like the pictures you are showing. Whenever a member of a family became a Sadhu He/She would be taken as a ever respectable member of the clan. He/She when alive would visit there home sometimes and teach yoga etc to the kid’s and tell stories about it! His picture was in our Home Temple. That is How Yoga is and was deeply integrated and a part of our Culture and life.....Dear, you failed to study the practice of Yoga in regular households....You only studied it in One group which does not participate in teaching and preaching the regular folks, otherwise you would have seen how Deeply yoga is and was a part of regular Indian folks and YES it was and is the way we practice it now in the Studios....Sorry to disappoint you but Your Theory of Yoga being Transformed from unknown and socially alien Ascetic roots to a generally accepted and practiced as daily form of exercise as now seen in Gyms across the worlds...Is Wrong :) It only moved from inside the regular homes to Gyms, where even Non Belivers like your self can do it! Thanks to generous Yoga Teachers and Gurus who Share it open Heartily, as they did with you!! But sorry to see that the only purpose of yours was to write a thesis on Orientalizing it. See sometimes even the best practices or medicines can’t help or save....you Remain a Colonizer to the Core....mind colonizer. Now I can understand how and from where and why the Theory like that of Aryan Invasion come from 😂😂🤣🤣

@Parijat Sharma dear sir, I am sharing feeling upset about the travesty that is the colonial history befallen on the great cultures of your biological families. As a man born in a small town in the north of the UK I apologise for what the people I represent have done and the mistakes you observe that they make even now. I honour the traditions and ancestors of which you speak, householder's and their gurus alike. I cannot change time nor fix the pain, but I can tell you I am speaking out, and I am not alone!! In my current home city Manchester for instance, we have a statue of Mahatma Gandhi which fills me with joy and hope. What I sense from your brief list of stories leads me to envision warmth and love of the family units and I understand now why so many Indian families I have met expand so widely into referring to so many as "cousin", "uncle, aunty".... There are many waking up in the world to a form of tribalism and localised autonomy. I believe through personal awakening we become masters of ourselves and therefore fit to serve the moment which presents itself, rather than we fit into a box and stay there for other’s supposed benefit (as in plutocracy). I beg you listen to the essence of what I'm intending to share and appreciate your passion for speaking out against the atrocities committed by the white supremacists of the last centuries. I was surprised to say the least in how James so apologetically referred to the colonial invaders so casually and wish our brothers and sisters and families here in the UK to bravely start to speak out against what we represent to those who still feel like victims of colonialism. In his defence, he attempts to minimise the significance of the entire speech at 27:05 saying "there was a lot more going on that what we know from texts".... "take with a pinch of salt" meaning it's not absolute, and he also alludes to the fact these are just pin pricks into the history of yoga and the video itself is titled as specifically looking at the roots of yoga within the Ascetic context. It doesn't (as far as I can understand) imply that these are the ONLY roots. Also, I ask you to consider, despite our historical handicap, does it not mean something that Mr Mallinson has dedicated his entire professional life to learning more about the traditions? We are actually so blessed in the UK (despite the horrors of the past) to now live amongst such diverse cultures from around the world. Notably, especially currently we are many Brits of African origin who share the voice of a loud and desperate movement of #BLM. There has been a huge problem with racism in our country (likely as a result of so many centuries of conditioned imperialism). We have had charitable foundations set up out of the scandals from racist policemen and have been therefore moved to action along with our American family to ramp up the resistance against systematic racism woven into the fabric of our society. It is unto us to recognise that our Anglo-American power structures have been built upon the rape and pillage of this world's rich humanity, but with the grace of non-violence, recognise the struggle and openly admit the violence on which our colonial history is built upon. I must tell you that it seems difficult for a large amount of my brothers and sisters to begin to look at let alone admit. You see, the public people of a supremacist facist system are impotent to be able to the damage I want to reassure you that many people are giving up on the old tired system and trying to live like how you describe in the heart warming stories of your home life as a youth. Here I include some sources which I hope help us in our shared journey: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-RBU0vq-c4c0.html&ab_channel=GreenAcademy Vincent Liegey - Degrowth - Decolonising our imagination ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-G2ZSyRpbQTA.html&ab_channel=SOASUniversityofLondon another video from the institution of SOAS which Mr Mallinson teaches at that demonstrate some valuable intentions which align with yogic teachings; most valuable form of knowledge is direct experience, and that when student and teacher are equal the transmission of true learning can occur, in some senses, "samatvam yoga uchate" ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-rQMnffFp44U.html CE Workshop | Yoga Philosophy and the West: Yoga in an Age of Confronting Systemic Discrimination ....This video comes from a large international governing body of Western yoga and I hope it shows to you that there is a sincere effort towards digging our collective consciousness out from where colonisation buried it. Thanks so much for hearing my message, I hope with your heart. I invite you to come to my country and I would like to personally welcome you and introduce you to my friends and family and show you the nature of our traditional ways (this land was invaded many times too) and show you how rich cultures from all over the world live in harmony here and teach us what we long to learn. @@yogastef Hi there, dear friend, I read some of your comments. Very confused rambling, sorry to say. I have not mentioned neither my family personally suffered anything at the hands of white people, in fact they did well as senior officers in British Railways. The problem here is, it his guy was given all the live in the world by these innocent Sadhus, yet all he could give back was make fun of them, scientific style!! His meanness drips from his face. Pathetic. Did he took permission from those people who’s pictures he is showing up there? Do you think it is ethical. Well, according to westerns standards, as long as u have cross, you can do nothing wrong!! But from my eyes it is wrong! He has no right to make fu. Of them publicly like this, with a serious face. He doesn’t measure up to the live and trust he was showered with!!!
