Wildlife TV presenter and conservationist Chris Packham has always been fascinated by the natural world. As a child, he spent hours collecting slugs, snails, ladybirds and tadpoles from the garden to store in jam jars. He struggled to fit in at school and was bullied by other students. Chris knew he was different but didn't understand why. It wasn't until his forties that he was diagnosed with autism, finally providing an explanation as to why he experiences the world differently to other people.

Brilliant interview. Packham is truly amazing. Your chat revealed a lot about him that we didn't know before. And it was amazing also to learn that you can be exceedingly polite and gracious as an interview, when you want to be. Of course it helps that in this case you are talking to a highly intelligent person and someone whom you admire. Great stuff, well done!

Same here at only 36! Even if I do get officially diagnosed, what difference will it make? It might help me understand myself better, but then again you don’t need the permission of some other chap with a clipboard to be able to look things up and see what applies to yourself on that front. With that said, it’s so nice to be able to “see yourself” in other people and feel a sense of relation and belonging that didn’t exist before! I really appreciate Chris for being so open and willing to discuss all this, it helps ever such a lot with connecting the dots about parts of my childhood and younger adulthood that, to me, never made sense.

I'm 31. Diagnosed in Spetmeber. So a little bit younger. But still. It's been the best thing that's happened in my life so far. I've never been happier. It's helped me be easier on myself and look after myself better now that I know what my needs are and what I'm dealing with. I've lost 6 stone in weight (after self diagnosis in April) and genuinely content (something I can't remember ever feeling). Self diagnosis *IS* valid. It's never too late. Yes, there is a mounring period for the life you've lived so far (how things could have been different had you known earlier. Relationships, family connections, job opportunities, education etc), but for me it was definitely worth it. I've realised I'm not broken, just function differently to "normal" people. And that's ok!

I had been put of during my life by other for a diagnoses. But when I was 61 I was diagnosed. In many ways regardless of the challenges, It's helped me understand and know myself better. It's also been a relief. Wishing you all the best for what ever you choose to do.

Been a fan of Chris since his Really Wild Show days and was lucky enough to see him live when he did his book tour. You could tell he wasn't entirely comfortable, especially because that venue wouldn't allow his dog on stage with him, but he was being interviewed by someone he knew well and seemed to relax, even with some of the more personal topics. His passion for the climate and animal was inspiring. He is someone who stands by his word. People who try to scare or litigate against him soon learn he is the wrong person to do that to. I remember when he was announced as a head of the RSPCA and the angry responses of people saying they would stop their donations, the reason given often - and bizarrely for 'animal lovers' - his view on things like fox hunting. He is perhaps less diplomatic than Attenborough, and not as cheery as Backshall, but that is what we need. My favourite bit of the talk I saw was after talking about going to Malta and Cyprus to protest against the killing of birds, an audience member stood up and said they had been a member of the RSPB for 20 years and had recently won a prize draw....a trip to Cyprus. His response was "I will be on the phone about that tomorrow". Wish I could have been a fly on the wall for that. 😂

I can only say that was just about an acceptable reflection by him, certainly wasn't his best and there is much room for improvement whenever he gets interviewed next time! Seriously Chris, you might be the most self-deprecating human I've ever heard that has, from any observer's point of view utterly no reason to be. How you have championed nature and the joys of the understanding and exploration for multi generations (sorry) of our planet is exemplary. You stand at human's evolutionary apex, exhibiting utter genuinity, principled integrity and unbridled passion which you communicate to others like no other.
