I dont think it was a genuine apology, I think it was an apology wrapped in self interest. I think it was dreadful Buckingham palace, Kensington palace, or st James palace never issued any statement of condemnation, I think that says more about palace methods and policy then any royal biography does.

I suspect what James might have said that in fact Clarkson emailed Harry rather than Meghan. So even as this piece targeted her but still made room to insult Harry - Clarkson referred to him as ‘Harold’ as William does - he couldn’t bring himself to rightly deliver an apology directly to Meghan who he said he hated with a ‘cellular’ ferocity. No surprise there. Apologies don’t pass for apologies anymore, and something tells me his won’t have been worth the paper they’re written or the utterance.

It's unbelivable the destain that some people have for Harry & Meghan, I got into an argument with one of my mum's long term friends the other day who's opinion was that he thought Harry was worse than Andrew and that Andrew hadnt done anything wrong because she was 17 and above the legal age of consent and that it's fair play to him for getting with someone younger than himself. I was disgusted by his views and the worst part was that my mum took his side to avoid confrontation and to keep the peace.

Complaining about an apology not being accepted means you aren't sorry or prepared to go through the process of really taking accountability. That is the process of DESERVING and gaining forgiveness. Furthermore as an avid fan of GOT I still remember feeling so awful for Cersei watching that scene. And that character was horrid yet, it still felt like too much. The best part was when he unknowingly admitted that since he didn't have someone else read it first, his true feelings and thoughts came out proving he is a terrible human being. Nobody stopped him from being who he is, so we all should just look past the fact that his true feelings are abhorrent and sociopathic and forgive him for not having someone else tell him he cannot be who he really is in that article because he is a monster. It's important to Clarkson that his "apology" should be seen to be utterly insincere. His acolytes would expect nothing less.

You don't explain yourself when making an apology. You say what you did and why it was wrong in nice clear terms so it's obvious you do actually understand. And then you say what you are going to do about it in terms of repairing the damage and preventing a repeat. The somewhat natural desire to explain yourself is actually an attempt to excuse and minimise by shifting attention away from who you hurt and how, back to yourself. And as such should be avoided. Apologies are about owning your actions and their consequences.

as a German: the British are very proud of their so called "Humor". They like people like Mr. Clarkson whos "jokes" are very well known and many liked Boris Johnson - a Clown. The damage of this kind of "humor" is immense.

There’s a HUGE difference between saying ‘I apologise’ and genuinely feeling sorry. There’s also far too many people who are of the ‘it’s easier to ask for forgiveness than permission’ mindset, who spout whatever spite and drivel they want knowing full well that they’ll be saying that they apologise shortly afterwards which will absolve them of any consequences and personal responsibility.

He’s the kind of man, my father raised me, not to be. Respect to his daughter for publicly calling him out. How do you look at your mother, wife, sister or daughter and think like that?

The thing I am waiting to hear in this apology is his acceptance of the consequences for him personally that his conduct had. So far it only reads like someone desperately not wanting to face any repercussions at all and therefore saying anything that will please his critics.

The whole point of someone like Clarkson is that he draws attention, which to his employers means money, ratings, circulation, etc. They don't care. Their marketing may be telling them that Clarkson is a 'draw' and controversy means their product gets more exposure. They don't react to the deterioration in his words and conduct, because it translates to opportunities to push their associated products on the back of Clarkson's notoriety. Only when reputational and financial damage occurs do they start reigning him in. He'll end up on some other company's star line up before long and they'll try to make the most of him while they can.
