Taken from the boat launch on Sailor's Encampment Drive on St Joseph Island this is the James R Barker from the Interlake Steamship Company upbound making the turn at Johnson's Point which is on Neebish Island across the river in the US
Captain Newland sent me a text asking if I was there and when I said yes, he sent out a big #BarkerBark Captain Salute for me and he came outside to wave as well which was terrific :)

It's so awesome of you to showcase James R Barker in this way, I'm sitting in the Nordics thinking how I can witness this myself. I also want to stand there and listen to the two-tone horns and watch this amazing ship sail by.

I have always loved the large ships of the Great Lakes. Your videos and scenes make me want to come up there again to see it in person one day. My first experience seeing a large ship close up was the Mesabi Miner going through the locks. She was very young at the time. Quite frankly we couldn't imagine how it would fit but it did. Thanks for posting the videos and keep them coming!

Happy Labor Day to everyone out there. Amazing country up there in Canada and United States....🇺🇸🇨🇦. Bless these Mariners as summer will start to give way to fall, then eventually winter.

First time viewing this channel! Great stuff! We Sailed Chesapeake Bay for 35 years in modest Sailboats. Lotsa maritime traffic in the Bay and Baltimore Harbor, but NOTHING like popping out of that tree lined creek and PIVOTING like in this video. Absolutely AMAZING piece of seamanship for certain!! Thanks Andrea. Sam, Towson, MD

I'm a new follower and love your videos - I now want to travel up there to see the ships go by! I was on a lake on Labor Day - Lake St Clair and Lake Huron aboard Viking Octantis. Beautiful ship, and a warm day!

4:04 - 4:16 It would be nice of Captain Newland, or his helmsman, to send you a video of the bridge as they are coming through the Jonhson's Point turn. You've described it so much detail so many times that it would be nice to see if you have all his commands down pat. I can almost hear it in my head: Capt. Newland (at the plot table after counting down the time to the turn): "All ahead flank. Hard left rudder." The look of the helmsman just as cool as cucumbers: "All ahead flank, hard left rudder, aye sir." You have to wonder if Captain Newland has any idea how popular he is among us followers?

4:22 I think when a ship like that turns hard, it DOES "pivot", i.e. it doesn't turn around the bow, or the stern, but the turning point of the boat is near the middle.

My point was she doesn't stop and pivot from any one spot, she is always moving forward

holy hell the size of that friggen thing I don't understand why ships are referred to as females, but then we give them all men's names

I sure wish Andrea would respond to her followers….it’s very discouraging to enjoy and let her know we are enjoying her videos, but not be acknowledged.
