I love that this references Kirk's time on the Farragut. Many people who started watching Star Trek with the Abrams-verse movies didn't realize that initially Kirk had a long career before getting the Enterprise, instead of getting her straight out of the Academy. This included his inital term as a junior officer on the same USS Farragut culminating with being tactical officer, second officer on the USS Republic, Second Officer on the USS THresher, Chief Engineer on USS Aeolus, Detachment commander on Federation colony Shad VII during amid reports of possible Klingon incursions, and a previous First Officer stint on the USS Eagle.
memory beta has a good compilation on kirk and everything he did before TOS. How much of this will actually be canon though remains to be seen. As standing, all that’s known is that he served on the Farragut and the Republic. Your point is definitely understood though about actual depth to his career. I do hope in the next seasons to come we get even more backstory. There’s still gaps and it’d be nice to hear about more.
Exactly. I actually thought it was a huge mistake of the films to jump straight into the whole - way too young! - crew on The Enterprise. We saw Kirk having to take command in the first film. Fine. But it would have been more realistic to have him on the Farragut in Into Darkness, and over the course of that film and the next film, he puts the band back together. Plus Chekov, who shouldn't have shown up until the 3rd film. The producers had no patience, and no faith in the audience, so we got films that were derivative and shallow, instead of actually fulfilling the goal of prequel: show us stuff about the characters we love we haven't seen before! (Yes, 2009 did this a little with the Starfleet Academy sequence which was , like, 10 minutes of the film.)
Still, Kirk seems to give the impression that the Farragut and its class are less shiny and fancy. I have a feeling this class of ship like the Miranda is the workhorse of the Federation
Sibling rivalry never fully goes away. Sam may not be on the fast track of his Starfleet career, but he does have a family of his own. Sadly, in TOS, Sam and one of his sons are killed, which does hurt James Kirk.
@@natekarpowicz7564 In the TOS episode "What Are Little Girls Made Of", it's mentioned that George and his wife had two sons. I'd be willing to wager one of the boys was also killed, along with his parents, in "Operation: Annihilate", with Peter being the only survivor.
@@purefoldnz3070 It's New Trek -- everything looks goofy. George's moustache harks back to the TOS episode "Operation:Annihilate". The VERY brief glimpse we get of the deceased George Kirk (a made-overed William Shatner) shows he had a moustache.
Really loved the sibling rivalry between these two and the way they played off each other authentically. I really hope they give these two an episode in season three. And if they somehow snuck in a Hemsworrb cameo in the series finale when Kirk gets command the internet would break
It's a damn shame Sam going to die in TOS, because he's turning out to be an excellent character, he's basically a nerdy version of Kirk but still awesome, the relationship between he and his brother is touching yet tragic in hindsight considering what happened to him. I give the props to the people behind the scenes props for making a minor and largely obscure character greater exposure and developing him into something more.
It's ironic that Sam, as the older brother and their father's namesake, was probably the one James felt he had to compete with to win his father's approval. Which likely motivated the ambition and success that his brother now resents.
I kind of had this conflict with my younger sister. My parents are very driven and successful. Both opened their own business and made money off of them. My sister entered the medical field and very driven like them.... has her own huge house. I on the other hand am laid back easy going and happy working a 9to5 job and going to my small house out in the woods. I'm the black sheep of the family lol
We know so little about George Kirk Sr. (Besides his death in the Kelvin Timeline and a few references from time to time). I’d be interested if we got a prequel film that goes over Kirk’s life on the Kelvin before James and Sam (that is if Hemsworth is up to come back to Trek after over a decade on Marvel).
Or just a what's the story with your head of security...and Sam saying can't you contain that libido of yours like EVER?!]] Also, when the camera kept panning out of 10-4 or the mess hall or whatever...I expected to see La'an hesitantly observing Jim and Spock and Uhura.
I know that it will never happen, but my dream story on SNW would be a throwback. Jim Kirk, a Lieutenant on the Farragut, when it’s attacked by the cloud creature from Tycho IV. Jim is forced to take command when the Captain (Garrovick) and nearly 2/3 of the crew are killed. It’s based on the original series episode called “Obsession”.
When you have conflicts with your sibling, it's never really about the announced subject. That's just the catalyst to stir up the memory of every fight, every slight, every resentment over a whole lifetime
sam is just jealous of jiim but at the same time... we saw this with picard in tapestry dream if you're in the sciences ...you're basically capped at how far you can go unless you're like the best in that particular field which i assume sam is not. as for james being XO of hte farragut.... shouldn't he be at least a lt. commander to commander by now?
he mentions in the clip( 1:00 ) that it's not official yet, since he still needs to train his replacement(as tactical officer IIRC), which will take a few months. once said training is complete and he's *officially* made XO, he'll likely get a Lieutenant Commander stripe
I'll say the actor could do with some real meat to get that broad shoulder thing that both Pine and shatner have. Slavs and Ashkenazis just can't be broad shouldered without some animal protien in their diet. Only way to become a Chad like Shatner is.@@TrevorJNagy
The actor playing James Kirk seems a bit older based on cannon... from what I understand, Kirk became a lieutenant on the Farragut at age 21 and first office by 26... Paul Wesley is 41.. and doesn't look the part of a young, ambitions Kirk, who became captain of the Enterprise by age 32
0:55 *Wow,* "what" would have been a better response. Seemed like such a nice meeting in the transporter room, to turn into this brother rivalry? It really doesn't make any sense. As Sam went into a very *DEEP* science training as JT went the path of Starfleet Command. It makes no sense that their would be any *Brotherly* rivalry. But again it doesn't really matter, it's a great show! All of them are, but this one is really a great storyline. I hope they run it for as long as possible. Could be 1,2,3, years before Pike's accident but that could be 10/15 years of Shows! Could only hope, *MORE Sci-fi!*
Jim isn't actually wrong. Sam should be living for his own happiness, and not their father's. Whether Jim wants his father's approval or not, he clearly enjoys doing what he does.
@@lynnfuson6285 From what i saw on here to late they killed him O_O unless they just made it look like hes dead if they did kill Kirk on the show they just created the worst kind of paradox in Star Trek
I'm sorry, I understand what they are aiming for here and, yes, fraternal tension can certainly be a lifelong phenomenon but... this is a conversation between 20 year old not between people who are obviously 40.
not unusual for an actor to play a character younger than them. hell, it's pretty much common for twentysomethings to play teenagers. as it is, it's canon that Kirk was in his early 30s when he made captain in the Prime Universe
Don't you mean comes to Enterprise, not starfleet? Kirk is about to become xo of Farragut, so he's already in starfleet which is the name of the organization, just as the British navy would be the Royal Navy.
Captain as position, not Captain as service rank. The two are different, even in Original Series. For example, we see Spock wearing full Commander stripes when he serves on the Enterprise Bridge, and yet both times his service record was read off in court, it said his service rank was Lieutenant Commander. Also, Deep Space Nine further confirms that no matter what one's actual rank was, you still call them "Captain" when they are in command. In this case, referring to Jadzia Dax when she was Lieutenant Commander. Even Ensign Nog would be called "Captain" if he had to take command. But as Chief O'Brien so eloquently put it, by the time Nog took command, there would be no one left to call him anything :P
@k1productions87 but on DS9..they call him commander sisko , even though he runs the station, until he's promoted to captain.. I was a huge collector of the books of each series as well as rabid fans of the show... and I thought for sure he jumped rank.. went from an Lt to captain.. and I don't mean position.
It’s a waste of an episode to just try get as many references to Kirk and other shows in - we get it - he’s supposed to be James T Kirk - we want a proper story about space!
Not a big fan of this Sam Kirk. Normally a sibling rivalry arises because the siblings are more alike, yet Sam and Jim have very different personalities.
Ive been watching Star Trek for a while now. I never knew kirk had a brother. I didn't remember him getting mentioned in any of the TOS films. I wonder if they will mention SPocks brother at all. Or do we just pretend Star Trek 5 never happened?
He appears in the TOS episode "What Are Little Girls Made Of?" (spoiler alert - He's dead when we see him. It's just William Shatner laid on the ground with a glued on mustache)
yeah, Sam is in TOS as a dead body, and in the Kelvin movies I belive there was a deleted scene, or a scene they planed to shoot but never did, with him. As for Sybok, he was teased in the first season of SNW and I think we saw like a shot of his back.
You have to watch the TOS episode, Operation: Annihilate. Sam and his wife were killed during a parasite attack at a research outpost. Their son, Peter, survived. Kirk got there too late and found Sam dead. Sam's wife died in sick bay aboard the Enterprise.
Jesus, they couldn’t find a smaller, thinner soyboy playing Kirk, huh? Meanwhile fanboys getting a stiffy because they found a little easteregg again. I’m so over with this crap
I’m disappointed in ST:SNW as it promised to go back to the beginning, to be what Star Trek was all about. What happened? Where is the bold Science Fiction? Where are the moral tales about humanity? Where is the moral and political/social comment? The Orville has grasped this perfectly! Why do we have the intro ‘Previously on…’ when it was supposed to be episodic? One of my biggest gripes of the whole franchise is why has the federation adopted the Enterprise’s uniform badge, when in fact each ship had a different insignia on their respective uniforms? An obvious blunder that now has a made up answer!
The he'll entitlement high are you on, you've missed the point of this show, and if you're a long time watcher, you'd know it has NOTHING to do with that, why do you think DS9 was more popular than you think, again speak for yourself.
Cause it's not real Star Trek. TOS Sam was never in Starfleet. He never served on the Enterprise, at least. What else? No characters from TOS/TNG/DS9 or Voyager used colloquial language (Example: EVERYTHING Ortegas says). Oh, the Gorn are NOT xenomorphs! I could go on. Why respect canon when it's much easier to overwrite it? Gene would be rolling in his grave. As would Nimoy.
