The good-humored "Mean Old Man" is a Taylor original that sounds like a jazz standard, partly thanks to the work of famed jazzers Larry Goldings (piano) and John Pizzarelli (guitar). While Taylor occasionally indulges himself in a little polite R&B bounce, though, the bulk of OCTOBER ROAD is cloaked in the gentle, contemplative folk-rock style that those familiar with the man's oevure will have no problem cozying up to.

Life is so hectic, but James Taylor is one of only a handful of recording artists/singers that put me at peace almost immediately. So glad he’s been and always will be a part of my musical life. ‘Love Always’ 1 John 4:8

DON'T LET THE TITLE FOOL YA, FOLKS! WASN'T EXPECTING A LOVING. APPRECIATIVE SONG OF PROFOUND TRANSFORMATION . . . the ornery cuss of the 100-year rain (the drenching not the life-giving quenching kind) who evolves into the lovable and loving golden retriever puppy dog who receives lots of true love. 🐕😘 . Clever ornery cuss lyrics, soft-shoe vibe and Casa Blanca feel to this MASTERPIECE of inner peace and the power of love. I love you for it, GK. ❤ New hearts mean new starts.

A few years back I saw James Taylor perform at Tanglewood with the Boston Pops. He played a few songs off of this album which had not been released yet, and this song just stayed in my head. I did not rest until I found it and it remains one of my favorite pieces of music to this day. Thanks for the great post.

James Taylor has written some wonderful songs; that he would come up with something like this ("Mean Old Man") somewhat late in life demonstrates his consummate skill and maturation as a songwriter. This song is an absolute joy, and a jewel that sparkles from every angle. So clever, and obviously heartfelt, so beautifully arranged and performed and sung. It's hard to pick a favorite JT song, but this one is right up there with "Secret O' Life", another song I never get tired of hearing.

Such a beautiful share Dear Friend. Loved this. To the poster, the sharer, you mtb416 Thanks from my heart. Just came back from visiting with some dear friends that lost one of their older-kids (51) and his biker club buds all showed up, OMG what LOVE. This song cheered my sad heart. Love James Taylor. James does the " Jazz standard " sound like no one today can...Really. At the end we so get the analogy. Bravo!

He might say his attempt at writing a standard. I don’t know if he has but it’s something he might say.

Any song that ends with a human being upgraded into a cute, furry animal is a good one.

Normally 19 year olds or others around that age range would listen to banging house music or boring rap music. But that's just white noise to me. I'm 19 myself and I'd rather listen to James Taylor than lazily written rap music

Its great to acknowledge good music but don't break your arm patting yourself on the back. Appreciating good music is a humble, quiet pastime that enriches from the inside before its spoken on the outside (if ever). Let the eventual years of good music build in you, make your ears better, your perspective richer and try not to sound like a mean old man at 19.

Well i think that this maybe one of Jame's worst efforts. This tune has no decent melody & is complete Crap,in my opinion.

+John Benn You are a mean old man, You are an ornery cuss, You are a dismal Dan, You make an awful fuss. Ever since your life began, man, It was ever thus, You were a nasty tyke Who was hard to like. You had to misbehave, You did things in reverse, Refused to wash or shave, You were horrid to your nurse. You got back what you gave Which only made you worse, You have to have your way Which is bleak and gray... Oh, dear...

Listen again. The architecture and contour of melody are brilliant.
