I get it now. I watched it when I was 4 and 5 and well throughout my childhood. Now I'm a 16-year-old high school sophomore, and I just cannot appreciate this movie (and James Tayor's song,) enough. And this song is just so eye-watering and heart-rocking, it's filled with so much nostalgia and melancholy. I'm a meh kind-of-guy; Most things in this world are meh to me. But things like this song that can pierce through into my heart, they just make me want to cry. Why does the world spin so fast? Why do we have to grow up so soon? I'm still a teenage[r], yet I'm asking the questions my grandmother would ask. God have mercy...

If Radiator Springs is actually Peach Springs, Arizona, then I can guarantee you that the Interstate saves you a whole lot more than ten minutes (about two hours) of driving. But, hey, I know you are quoting the movie, and I am glad that so many persons like Cars. I just wanted to share a little bit of my experience while travelling.

Been a long time since I read the production notes. I think that gave the story the nostalgia boost it needed. Plus it adds to the franchise's culturally resonant theme of looking to the past to achieve what you want. Something that was missing in Cars 2 but I'm glad they brought it back for Cars 3.

17 years ago this movie came out and I obsessed over it! Realizing the meaning of this song makes me miss the time that everything I love was brand new, and that the world was brighter. As gray gradually enters my vision, I begin to shed tears for the happiness I lost, the memories that I can't relive, and the place I called home I can never return to. I miss the kid I was back then. I want to give my future kids memories such as this and shed tears, not in misery, but in happiness, as they begin seeing what I once did, assuring me that I did right by them as a parents. This was part of the earliest soundtrack to my life and makes me tear up to this day and even as I write this. I want nothing more than to restore happiness to all who share this goal of preserving the happiest of memories for those yet to come, no matter what means I use. For those who don't understand the memories that are triggered, once you get to be an adult, you will start seeing it and begin putting the pieces of the puzzle together.

This song just kills me listening to it. I'm from a small town in the middle of the Kansas prairie. My great-great grandfather founded it in the 1800's and it's never had more than 1000 people living there, but it was the best little town in the world. Don't really know what exactly changed, but for the past few years it's been slowly falling apart. Can't hardly go home anymore without wanting to cry as I drive down Main Street. I hope something changes before there's nothing left but memories.

It right next to a big highway and since it was faster than the road going through our town they took us off the maps... Even before that there were only fifty people. People went out of business so now there's only ten of us.... The town used to be so pretty with neon lighting and beautiful music playing. There was a auto body shop, a store, clothes store and gas station. Now there's only a store and gas station.... :(

This song is such a testament to the differences in the way life is lived today versus years ago. Everyone today is in such a rush to get to where they want to be, people and business pressure us to always move faster, if you go to slow, your old, washed up, you need to be passed by. So sad. If you go to fast you miss things along the way, you bypass so much you could have seen and things so beautiful they make your heart sing. I was 7 when Cars was released and I don’t remember much from the song, but it seemed sad due to the beat and rhythm of the song’s instruments and the tone of voice James Taylor is using. Now I’m 23 and when I listened to this song again a couple years ago, it felt like a painful heartbreak of a couple going their own separate ways because they, just like the town, lost their “zing”, or spark. Even writing this now is starting to make my eyes well up.

Every time I hear a song with a similar message, I just start to think about the time when I was a little kid (I am 19, so it was not too long ago, but I am talking about before elementary mostly). My father line grandparents lived in an apartment in a block of flats that had an easily accessable, but still somewhat fences off square. I used to play there a lot. Just myself or with my half-sister, with my cousin, and later with my second one too. Since I was little I don't have that many memories, but I know well enough just how much that place matterd to me. I learned how to ride a bike there, my Pa would always buy us sour yet sweet lollipops at the small store just outside and stuff. All of these little things just add up. The square, the apartment, the fun we had... And slowly it just all started to disappear. We grew bigger, spent less and less time there. My Pa died of cancer, a couple of years later my Ma followed, also by cancer. The apartment where at times the whole family had lunch together (like 15 people) got empty. Both from people, and from furniture. Later we sold the apartment. I didn't think much of it at that time, but now as I think back... It is always like this... Only when we think back... That is the only time it is precious and when it hurts... For quite a long time I haven't even thought about it. The square, the apartment, nothing. The messy basement where we kept our first bikes and only my Pa knew wich key is to be used on the 2 different doors feom the 5 keys... Nothing... And these kind of songs get me back to that place that isn't even far, 15 minutes of walking at a slow paste. Even the square changed. The slag based soccer field is now full of grass, one of the swings and it's supporting fences are taken, as well as the teeters and the slide. Even the sand pit's supporting stones were taken away... My childhood basically disappeared as I grew up, and I didn't even take notice of it since it just never crossed my mind... Time is an asshole... I will tell you this much, even tough I am only this young... Even I know this at this point...

This happened to a lot of towns once the interstate system was built too. In my case my little town went down when I-10 was built, essentially bypassing it. My town was a hot spot since it laid almost exactly between Houston and Beaumont along US Highway 90. Highway 90 WAS the interstate before I-10.

this song tells me much from my life. As many of you my life was perfect until one day I noticed I had go a long way away from the life that had make me happy for so much early years but it was too late. The town changed, all that places that I loved as a kid where gone and worst of all, some of the most important people of my life that where a huge part of that happiness where gone forever too. suddenly the world is not the same isn't it? This son represents all that for me.. Miss all that!

Step back into the enchanting streets of 1960s Dublin, Ireland, as James Taylor's melodic 'Our Town' captures the essence of a nostalgic era. Did you know? In 1953, amidst the charm of Dublin, Lorna Byrne was born, adding an extra layer of nostalgia to this musical journey through time. Edit 26 July 2024: Yul Brynner also played as Ramses (Pharaoh) in the 10 commandaments movie in 1956.

Have always loved Cars. And then...as life would have it, my daughter needed me to drive with her from San Diego to Atlanta. And part of the route we took was down Route 66. I immediately thought of this song and the Cars movie. A truly awesome experience to drive on Route 66 and drive thru the Heartland of America.

As a high school freshman living in a small town, I find this song way too relatable:It feels like time is flying way too quickly with each passing day. Sometimes I wish the world and all its people would slow down a little and just have time to breathe a little. These days everyone is in a mad scramble to reach the top of the food chain and they don't take the time to stop and smell the roses.....if that makes any sense. I'd give _anything_ to go back in time and relieve the best moments of my life, even for a moment, to just go back to that sense of familiarity and comfort that I felt back when I was younger and I didn't need to worry about things changing right before my eyes. Anyway, I'm sorry for wasting your time by writing this comment for you to read but I just needed to say something.....
@Lost_Gold08

No, it's okay) Furthermore, your experience is very interesting. You are right, time is passing, we grow older and start to notice things that we didn't notice before. Even cruel ones. You know, I hate the time I live on. And like you, want to relieve these cool moments of my life over and over again.) Cause the real matter of our life are emotions. Just emotions make our life brighter and full of different colors)

I put this song on every time i take a drive. Down to the cemetery. Where my father is laid to rest. Every August. He had liver cancer. Yet he spent almost every moment he could with me and my sister. In so much pain. But wore a smile all the time. Rest In Peace, dad. Rest In Peace.

Lived in this town a long time. Moved when I got married but came back because I wanted to give my kids the same great childhood I had. But now with my Daughter having one more year of high school and my son having 4 years to go, this town has changed. The new people have no small town values and don't care for even their next door neighbors. The old town has changed as much as I wish it would stay the same. But how do I leave My town to these bums. Friends moved away first. Family has moved now neighbors are leaving. I'm one of a few left. Anywhere else will feel lime an extended vacation and eventually I'll feel like it's time to go home. So many memories. Kids still have some friends here but that's it. Me and a few childhood friends all discussing when or where we all will end up. This song hits deep in my heart. My kids grew up here too.

Although I was extremely young when this movie came out I vaguely remember watching the scene with this song, thinking it was just a simple track with soft guitars, elegant pianos, majestic strings and singing. However when I grew older, I decided to rewatch Cars. And it was at that point that I actually listened to the lyrics. It genuinely brought a tear to my eye, the past is left behind, and everything changes right before your very eyes. Although I’m not from America, I know about the true tragic stories for tiny towns along Route 66 since Interstate 40 was constructed. All thanks to one movie, my vision for the past changed and altered significantly.

Think about all those small towns in NV, AZ, UT, TX, CA that were bypassed when ISHS (InterState Highway System) was put in place. Imagine all those people living there since times of their grandparents, who lived off the trade with travellers. Imagine how they must have been feel like, their sadness, anger, resignation, pain, despair, sense of betrayal, being fooled; having to make a decision: to move out and find new place to live and make for living, probably in bigger cities, and thus leave the land where they were born and raised forever; or stay and see the town slowly collapse and go extinct.

Where I live the colleges aren't really good so after I finish my high school I have to leave my city and state, right now I have 9 months left of school and I will be gone by next year and maybe I won't return here for the rest of my life except for the occasional visits to my parents........ I have been here for my entire life, the fact that soon the roads I knew, the houses I passed by while going to school, the ground where we used to play will be something of past is so sad......... But at the same time I am also excited because I would exploring the world so it's kind of a mixed feeling.
