CD/DVD liner note from James - One Man Band (2007):
“It’s a strange reality of the modern popular song that the first time it’s played is when it’s recorded. Sometimes a song will be finished for deadline in the studio the day the thing is cast in stone forever. I know that songs and arrangements evolve and develop over time; that somewhere around the twentieth time it’s played for a live audience, a song finally completes itself. That, among other things, is what makes a good live recording unique. I’ve often thought that live performance means being well prepared and then waiting for the inevitable, unexpected thing to happen. We come onstage, well rehearsed and in good shape, and repeat what we have done before as best we can. But the real goal is to be in the present moment and on the surface of ourselves; open and trusting. Nobody wants to be perfect: that’s frozen, dead…It’s “be here now”, I guess…
Of course,‪@larrygoldings‬ does more than just accompany me. His growing presence in the world of jazz is well acknowledged, both for his own recordings and live performances and as a member of a good number of team efforts. I tend to form musical (and personal) relationships with other players and then stick with them for years. Arnold McCuller and David Lasley have worked with me since the mid-‘70s and others nearly as long (Jimmy Johnson, Steve Gadd, Mike Landau, Kate Markowitz, Valerie Carter…)
After my great friend, producer and pianist Don Grolnick died in ’96, I performed with a number of excellent keyboard players. It was during the recording of my October Road album in ’02 that I worked with Larry. Russ Titelman had booked him to play on “Mean Old Man” along with Steve Gadd on drums, Jimmy Johnson on bass, Clifford Carter on synth, and the fine seven-string jazz guitarist, John Pizzarelli. This was an incredible band, and after hearing Larry Goldings’ solo on that song, first time through, he pinned it. That was our introduction and he’s been my first call ever since.
Then there’s the bus factor. You see, someone’s playing may be great, but what’s it going to be like spending 10 hours a day riding to the next gig with them for a couple of months? Larry’s Bus Factor is not a factor for he is a bus riding fool, for a fact.
Part of his talent is his ability to “split his hands.” Though not as painful as it sounds, it does require great focus and skill to play a melody/accompaniment with his right hand and, with his left hand, (often on another keyboard) play a distinct bass pattern. This Larry can do with effortless grace, and he has made this One Man Band show possible. He is a committed father, brother, and son, and I am in his debt. Larry Goldings is my One Man Band.” - James Taylor

LYRICS
The Frozen Man by James Taylor
Last thing I remember is the freezing cold
Water reaching up just to swallow me whole
Ice in the rigging and howling wind
Shock to my body as we tumbled in
My brothers and the others were lost at sea
And I alone am returned to tell thee
Hidden in ice for a century
I walk the world again
Lord have mercy on the frozen man
Next words that were spoken to me
Nurse asked me what my name might be
She was all in white at the foot of my bed
I said angel of mercy, I’m alive or am I dead
My name is William James McPhee
I was born in 1823
I was raised in Liverpool by the sea
But that ain’t who
I am Lord have mercy, I’m the frozen man
It took a lot of money to start my heart
Just to peg my leg and to buy my eye
The newspapers call me state of the art
And the children, when they see me, they cry
Well, I thought it’d be nice just to visit my grave
See what kind of tombstone I might have
There lay the wife and daughter and it seemed so strange
(So strange)
Both of them dead and gone from extreme old age
I say, when I die make sure I’m gone
Don’t leave ’em nothing to work on
You can raise your arm, you can wiggle your hand
(Unlike myself)
So you can wave good-bye to the frozen man
Good-bye
I know what it means to freeze to death
To lose a little life with every breath
To say good-bye to life on earth
To come around again
Lord have mercy, I’m the frozen man
God have mercy on the frozen man
Have mercy on the frozen man

I totally agree Peter, I think I'm probably older than you, I miss this country and how it used to be so long ago. I miss actual silver coins and swearing not allowed on TV and not locking our doors and block parties and gasoline at 27 cents a gallon and I could go on and on. I also miss the music of yesterday and the artists we loved so much.

I used to played this song to my junior high Ancient History class. Like James I didn’t know much about the real history of the body. I had the students imagining a human being born more than a couple of thousand years ago! I think I just wanted an excuse to play a favourite song.

A three minute introduction not to be missed! "Anyway," says James, "The song's not as long as the introduction" [audience laughs] and be sure to stick around for James' 2 minute extro: "I realize now this is just another song about my Dad." Love this 'live' version -- thanks for sharing with us! This has always been one of my 'Top 5' James Taylor songs. Especially for the bridge. Like all great composers, Mr. Taylor uses that middle part to take the melody in a new direction -- and our hearts with it. Mine always soars when James sings It took a lot of money to start my heart just to peg my leg, and buy my eye. Newspapers called me 'state-of-the-art' and the children when they see me . . . cry

2:49 newspaper says the frozen man was buried in ice in 1845, so if he was born in 1843 he would have been only a 2year old baby then .. so, james correctly changed the lyrics to " i was born in 1823 .." 5:47 😊

Dear arianebog5472 Had to add this after listening to James singing the wonderful 'Frozen Man '. Your words got to me , I lost my lovely wife in 2019 and still think about her every day but I happen to believe that death is not the end but the beginning and somehow James Taylor's inspirational words and music seem to reinforce that belief and have certainly touched my soul . I am so sorry for your loss but at least that man's songs continue to heal us . Patrick Small singer songwriter.

Though I don't know him, I've known his voice for over 50 years. I sing in his range, and he inspired me to play guitar. Then, after my home burned down in 2017, my sister got us tickets to see him in June 2018. What a blessing from my sis. 6th row, center stage. During intermission, he came to the corner of the stage, and I was face to face with the legend. I kindly asked him to sign a cd. Which he did. Then I asked to thank his people for getting us there to see him, how it meant so much....after losing our home. He took my hand looked into my eyes and said he'd heard what happened...and wished us a smooth journey getting back on our feet. He's real, people. And I love and value that moment....and I love the warmth and kindness he shares. Thank God he survived his earlier demons. Blessings JT.
