Truthfully it allows videos to be taken with better clarity. That's really where it started. Everyone thinks it is for some atmospheric reason but it started for pictures and videos and then someone said this was cool let's turn the lights out for everything. Also it allows for some cool visual effects lighting wise but it really just preference I am not a fan personally but it is what it is and does very little to effect me.
