To claim that a guy with over 200 assists, who played most of his career as a winger and who until 2015-2016 was constituting the attacking game of his team is just a goal scorer is outrageous. A goal scorer doesn’t have over 60% G/A participation when his team wins. A goal scorer doesn’t have the most assists in UCL. A goal scorer doesn’t have 70% of his teams G/A when they win in EUROS. Totally at Carragher side. I can't even understand why this has always been a debate appart from the fact that media needs to create debates constantly, but the only thing you need is to use your eyes and try to leave your love for your team or nation appart and try to see reality. Cristiano is the best goal scorer of all time while Messi is as good goal scorer as Cristiano plus one of the best playmakers of all time, plus one of the most intelligent guys on the pitch, plus the best dribbler ever, plus the player with more goals contributions (goals + assists) and a long etc... and all this without even mentioning all his awards, that he has won all the tittles he can win and he is the player that has won more tittles in football history. I never like to inlcude team tittles in a comparison based on individuals but this is just for those who were always disrespectful wirh Messi because he had no tittles with Argentina. Now that is over, and I know some people hate it because they thought Messi was going to retire with 0 international tittles with Argentina, but that totally changed at the end of his carreer.
It was a debate because at the point when they had 5 Ballon Dors each, Ronaldo was the guy who had done it in the two best leagues, won a Ballon Dor and UCL in both teams whilst being the most valued player, won his country their first international trophies despite playing with a weaker side, and being the best UCL player of all time. For the record, I think Messi is quite a lot better than Ronaldo but the debate is easy to make. CR7s advantage was the fact that he could and had done it in multiple teams whereas Messi looked like more of a Barcelona player, and even after leaving their spanish clubs, Ronaldo kept up his numbers at Juve while Messi had a lesser time at PSG. Without his more recent international wins, this debate may never have been settled.

Messis injury may have helped Ronaldo aquire his 2013 award, but Ronaldos injury worked the same way for Messi in 2015. Without international success, the debate still stood strong, despite Messi having better statistics.
Real Madrid as an organization forced the conversation as if it were ever a debate. It was never a debate. For all the greatness CR7 has, his one flaw was ever thinking he was better than Messi. He could've just accepted that sometimes the world is unfair and no matter how hard you work somewhere there is a kid that was just given a gift you'll never be able to reach. CR7 is still a great and he will be remembered for a long time, but he was never in contention as the GOAT. He had years where you could say he was the best of that year, but never was he considered the best of all time.

Carra is sort of right, but that random American player was also right. Early Ronaldo at man united was arguably as good as Messi ever was. People get caught up on the goal scorer Ronaldo became at Madrid, but the quality Ronaldo showed at Man U was out of this world. Stats are just one part of the game, but Ronaldo’s ability at Man U was by far the best he ever showed. Almost every goal he scored was puskas level, with goals shot from half field, perfectly taken free kicks, etc. He also showcased a level of control and movement with the ball that rivaled players like Maradona, Messi, pele, R9, Ronaldinho, etc. Purely on a technical and ball playing perspective, Ronaldo was at his prime at Man U. That Man U Ronaldo was arguably just as good as Messi in his prime. With that being said though, Messi is still better. I always preferred watching Ronaldo more/liked him more as a player, but you can’t know anything about fútbol and claim Ronaldo was ever better. Messi just epitomizes natural talent, and a level of control over the ball that is in many ways unrivaled. Messi has also been a lot more consistent with his ability throughout his career, and to this day still showcases quality on the ball. On top of that Messi has the numbers and accolades to go along with the consistency of his quality(ie. Did not have to sacrifice his skill/ability to be able to achieve that). That’s what makes both of them special tbh, as they achieved said numbers/trophies while still showcasing amazing talent, but Ronaldo started to drop off once he joined Madrid(he had to change his game to keep up with those numbers). What makes Messi more “special”/unique though, is that he did it while keeping his ability more consistent/his quality was a lot cleaner(basically never looked bad/still showcased unrivaled talent while achieving this). Just watch how Messi moves with the ball(especially in his prime). It looks like the ball is glued to his foot, and the quick sharp movements he makes are almost unnatural. A lot of it is just his body shape, his natural talent, and his balance. He’s a player whose ability/style will likely never be replicated. So I personally prefer to watch the old Man U Ronaldo, but Messi overall has just always been the better player.

As a Messi fan its always been a close debate Cristiano is a machine but i think now after the 2024 Copa America, Cristiano absolutely has to win the 2026 world cup and probably reach 1000 goals to be considered the greatest.
