That was a very Diplomatic Choice of words Jamie made to Colum which stood him in good stead and appeased his Uncle Dougal MacKenzie at the same time! that was a very tense scene indeed It had Claire feeling nervous as she thought it was all her fault that Jamie was back in the great hall, all’s well that ends well as the saying goes!

In simple terms Jaime belonged to a small clan, that clan was loyal to a larger clan. Both clans were family and it was expected for the small clan to make an oath to the big clan. An oath like, i will serve, defend and die for you. But Jaime basically went. We are family, i love you and i obey you, but my first responsibility or oath is to my small clan.
