"Nashville Now" host Ralph Emery introduces Jan Howard to sing "He Called Me Baby" by saying he believes Patsy Cline was the first to record it. Actually Jan recorded it on April 30, 1962, and it was included on her 1962 Capitol album titled "Sweet and Sentimental". Jan's friend Patsy later recorded the song on February 7, 1963, which was less than a month before she died in the plane crash.
The song has become a standard, and other females to record it include Skeeter Davis, Nancy Wilson, Dinah Shore, and Jessi Colter.
Carl Smith had a Top 40 country hit with the song (as "She Called Me Baby") in 1965, Dick Curless had a hit with it in 1972, and Charlie Rich took it all the way to No. 1 in 1974. In addition to Carl Smith, other Hall of Fame members to record it include Eddy Arnold, Glen Campbell. Waylon Jennings, Ferlin Husky, Ernest Tubb, Charlie Louvin, and the song's writer, Harlan Howard. Burl Ives, Mickey Gilley, and Bobby Bare are among other male artists to record the song.
