My favorite piece from my favorite operetta. Written by Sigmund Romberg. B-side of "Oh, Promise Me". Recorded in 1947 and released in June 1949 according to Billboard. The most famous version of this song is likely the recording by Mario Lanza, which is also fantastic. Richard Crooks also recorded a stellar version.

Jan peerce was not only a great artist with a fabulous voice,he sang with heart and emotion. When mario Lanza sings this he speaks the words and communicates in such a magical way that you forget he is singing .Like the great actors. You forget they are acting. it is in the moment.Mario goes straight to the heart so naturally . The best recording of this music. "Toscanini's tenor" was his title...and deservedly so.

I am reading a book from my late mother's collection called "The Bluebird of Happiness," the memoirs of Jan Peerce. What an enchanting man he was! I am a wee bit prejudiced because my late husband, Norman Rose, was a cantor who had studied opera ... he also was a gorgeous tenor; many people thought he sounded like Jussi Bjoerling. Struck me funny because he was as far away in temperament from Bjoerling as anyone could be. I am positive that Peerce would have liked Norman Rose.

I have heard so many versions of this, but this is probably my favourite. I had never heard of him either before I came on RU-vid ....

In 1963, Columbia released an LP of _The Student Prince_, an in-studio performance recorded in stereo that was superbly performed, recorded and mixed. It featured Jan Peerce, Roberta Peters, Giorgio Tozzi, Anita Darian, Lawrence Avery & the Merrill Staton Choir. Sadly, it has not been made available on CD. I don't know why. It was far and away the best recording of _The Student Prince_ ever made, and if it isn't a recording of the cast of an actual stage production of the musical, I say that doesn't matter at all. The track of the "Serenade" on that recording, sung by Jan Peerce, was simply perfect. Presumably, Columbia passed the rights on to CBS Records, and then Sony got them. I wonder if the master recordings weren't lost or something like that.

I remember that LP, I wish I still had a copy of it. You are correct that Peerce's "Serenade" on the album was a masterpiece. In 1961, he sang "Serenade" on the Ed Sullivan show as well. How I wish someone could get that footage.

I agree. I grew up with it, on 33 1/3 LPs. Would love to download the entire recording.

I too, grew up with this recording, it was my first introduction to opera, I fell in love with Roberta Peters then, I wish I could find the CD of this, or even a download on YT but I cannot- is there someone who could do that? It would be greatly appreciated !!

That Serenade version by Peerce with Giorgio Tozzi is available on RU-vid. Good though this version is I think the 1963 version just shades it.

Superb singing doesn't get better than this, but the Lanza rendition has greater emotion and touches my heart this version does not.

Phenomenal voice. Jan Peerce will stand the test of time. What clarity, what power. Too bad his name has not spread to many in subsequent generations. Truthseekeramr1946

As much as I like Peerce's voice, I always felt this number works best as an ensemble piece. I never cared much the Lanza version either as I missed the smaller solo parts. To me, this is one of Romberg's jewels when all the vocal parts and chorus perform together. OT: If you've never heard Kern's "All The Things You Are" performed as the written ensemble, it will knock your socks off.

The sound guy mixed this improperly - the male chorus came in too loud on his high notes at the end of the second stanza.
