Jan Peerce sings the song "The Bluebird of Happiness" which was an enormous hit in its day. It was written for him around 1934 by composer Sandor Harmati and lyricist Edward Heyman when Peerce was one of the leading singers at NBC's Radio City Music Hall. Peerce's original recording of this song was cut around 1936, although under the name Paul Robinson (he didn't want to cheapen his name by recording under it on budget labels). That recording was very popular on the radio for many years and in some cases when broadcast on it over 20 years later was still being credited to Paul Robinson (I'll post this version in the near future if anyone is interested). This one here is Peerce's original RCA Victor commercial recording of the song made on June 7, 1945 with Sylvan Levin conducting. As of the late 1970s, this record was second in sales only to Caruso's recording of "Over There" among the all time best selling recordings of opera and concert singers.

The one an only JP! My father loved to sing this! I at the piano and my aunt joining in to make a duet. That was before 1962. They're all gone now. The old parlor is silent. No one sits at the dinner table but me. But in the silence of the night comes the echo of their voices once again. Thank you, so much.

my dad used to sing this all the time too he died of colon cancer February 26th 1973 one month into his 47th birthday. I blame it on pills doctors gave him primarily Thorazine and stelazine! he also loves to sing paper doll by The Mills Brothers and also Old Man River from the movie soundtrack.

Your tribute to your father touched me. It so reminded me of my Beloved Father, who was the great love of my life. How grateful I was to be the daughter of an intelligent, gentle & strong man who taught me Philosophy...through great music. It is forever ingrained in my heart. I read this comment many years ago and it has stuck with me ever since. Such an eloquent way to lament the marching passage of time, of death. My grandmothers are now not long for this earth, we are expecting the bad news any day now. And hearing my parents talk about their parents and their childhood, it reminded me of your comment. I hope you are doing well, I just wanted to let you know how much your words have touched me.

I'm sitting here weeping at this. My stepfather, who died in December 2000, used to play the original 1978 record on an actual Victrola. He'd lip sync it and dance around in his underwear and it was so funny we'd sit and laugh till our stomachs hurt.He was such a wonderful man. I miss him.

My grandma told me that this was the last song that they played at midnight on her local radio station in Philly and no matter what she was doing (at a dance or something) she would rush home to hear it! She had not heard it since she was teenager and when songs and everything were available on the internet I found it for her and she cried and sang. It’s my last beautiful memory of her and I always play this video when I miss her, thank you for posting it. ❤️

I am painting an Adirondack Chair, which will be auctioned off for the benefit of a scholarship fund along with many others. Not knowing what to paint onto one of the large arms, this song suddenly came to me from so many years ago. The words were still clear in my memory. My parents loved Jan Peerce. I painted a Bluebird onto the arm and seemed so perfect. The song gives one a feeling of optimism.

My paternal grandfather, Louis Rosenberg, loved this song. He used to play the vinyl recording on his record player and sing along. I can still hear his wavering tenor rendition as counter-point to Jan Pierce’s deep baritone. I was mesmerized by both of them.

my grandfather would always quote this song, and I never really paid any mind to what he was talking about. I'm kind of young and thought he was just rambling about back in then day, but then I decided to look it up. This has such an inspiring message and even though I don't tend to like older genres of music, this song is great. I'm going to try and obtain this outlook of life from now on out.

About 5 years ago I was allowed to go through the home of my Great Uncle Chet and Aunt Betty and Down Below among other 78s I found this piece. I took it back home with me and put it on and listened to it.... wow. I had never heard it before, or even heard of it, but I knew this was something special. For a time I would listen to it every day in the afternoon as soon as I got home. So comforting, that's all I can say.

love it, thanks soooo much! i was born in this year -- 1945. this song, which my mom and dad played a lot on our rca victor turntable, carried me through life. of course, i only realized it in my golden years. what carries a person is the image one has had since childhood: the bluebird of happiness is a very positive yet realistic image. it is embedded in my soul!

This was the sign-off music at 1 AM of a classical music radio station in San Francisco that I used to listen to every night when I was on night duty for 6 months at Oakland Naval Hospital. I could synch every word! Every time I listen to this music it takes me right back to those somewhat lonely (but overall happy) days at Oak Knoll in 1956.

My wife of 6o years passed away on September 9 of melanoma. While she was home in her hospital bed, my daughter was the only one she could clearly hear, and during a conversation she was asked to send a sign if she was content and happy in heaven. She quietly answered that she would "send a Bluebird". After the funeral a few days later, my daughter saw, from her window, a bluebird sitting outside. A coincidence or a true sign to those who believe in an afterlife????

former Disney star's stomatch turning performance at VMA's: probably 100's of 1000's of views by now, (I'm not going to bother to check). A great star of opera, 1940's and 1950's radio, and Hebrew songs, singing an uplifting, tender, innocent paean to the joys and sorrows of life: 32,000 views. and that's where we are folks. No one ever loses money underestimating the intelligence of the American public.

my father just turned 88 earlier this month and he always talks with a smile (and a sense of humor) about this record playing throughout his childhood. I am pretty sure it would be the original hit from the 1930s. Would that be available to listen to?? I would love to send it to him as a surprise (via RU-vid, that is)... Many thanks for posting this version in the meantime!

Peerce had recorded it several times (first in 1935 or so, then in 1945 commercially for RCA Victor, and 1958 on his "Las Vegas" album, more times commercially [listening to one now I'd never even heard before!], and countless times live). I thought I had posted the original radio recording, but apparently not. I definitely have it on CD, but not handy. It doesn't seem to be elsewhere on RU-vid anymore.

The original is almost certainly on a CD titled "Musical Moments - The Unknown Jan Peerce, 1934-1939." I believe it also to be on the CD titled "Bluebird of Happiness" released by Pearl, though am not completely sure which version is included on that. Unfortunately both CDs are much more expensive than when I bought them several years ago.

The world of music has changed only for the worse. Whereas we had opera we now have rap. Whereas we celebrated great composers we now just have posers. Whereas we had jazz and Count Bassie we now have a pop celebrity nearly najed called Tayylor Swift, a huge letdown. Whereas we had swing music with great instrument players like Benny Goodman and Glenn Miller we have Snoop Dog and Justin Bieber who can't play any instrument or sing or write music notes on paper. Whereas we had great black singers like Nat King Cole, Fats Domino, Lionel Richie, Roberta Flack, Muddy Waters and BB King, we now have gangsters, convicts and illiterate pimps pretending musical skills. Not only have the blacks lost their respect for their predecessors and musical culture, but youth and punks think the crud heard now is wonderful. They are totally ignorant of music at any time in the history of the world and living in the worst music history ever known. 😢
