Using my oldest son’s theory of Amateur Genealogy 101, we have proven that Jana is a maternal first cousin to Jonny Quest, and other characters from other shows.
Glad to see, reading through the comments, but I'm not the only one that had crush on a cartoon character as a child. I can't believe I'm going to admit this, but I remember crying to my cousin because my 7-year-old self was in love with Jana but knew she was a cartoon and that I would never meet her in real life.😥 I remember my cousin, same age as me actually, telling me that I would be all right and that I would find someone else.😊 Amazingly kind and tender for my cousin, considering she was also one that used to beat me up too.😄
It would be so great if they put this out on DVD! My daughter would LOVE this show! She loves She-ra and is all about animals! I think this would be her favorite show! If anyone "in charge" is reading this, get to it!
@@frompartsunknownweighingin9557 No, but you're not the first to ask. My last name is Andrusiek which I shortened to Andru to make it easier on people.
Thank you for your great work. Has animation work changed much over the years - comparing today's shows with 70s shows like Jana Of The Jungle in terms of processes and techniques?
After its cancellation by NBC in 1978,the short-lived series JANA OF THE JUNGLE returned in 1985 as part of the USA Cable Network's Cartoon Express in which all 13 episodes of the original series were repeated. This lasted until 1990.
Through his special developed theory of Amateur Genealogy 101, my oldest son has proven that Jana has the following first cousins: Pepper and Dottie from “CLUE CLUB”, April from “FUNKY PHANTOM”, Laurie from “INCH-HIGH PRIVATE EYE”, Wendy from “THE GALLOPING GHOST”, Jonny from “JONNY QUEST”, Merilee from “BUTCH CASSIDY & THE SUNDANCE KIDS”, Taffy from “CAPTAIN CAVEMAN & THE TEEN ANGELS”, Penelope Pitstop of “THE PERILS OF PENELOPE PITSTOP”, Rosemary from “HONG KONG PHOOEY”, and finally, the Sisters Barksdale (Helen, Amy, and Rita from “DARIA”; no connection whatsoever with Rita Jones from “THE GALLOPING GHOST”).
@MichaelGaribaldi NOT hard to believe. Cassidy did LOADS of voices for Hanna- Barbera, mostly villains. But He was also Frankenstien Jr(RRRIGHT, BUZZ!!), & the Size-changing guy in Galaxy Trio. I loved him as Lurch...the hilarious deep-throated reactions to the hair-brained ideas the Addams Family came up with were priceless!
@Velocity9s Ted Cassidy reprised his role as Lurch in the "Scooby Doo Meets The Addams Family" episode of The New Scooby Doo Movies, which aired on Boomerang as part of "Scoobtober" in October. John Astin, Carolyn Jones and Jackie Coogan also reprised their roles. (And all of them got top billing on the opening title card.) The rest of the characters were voiced by others. (I think Don Messick voiced Cousin Itt.)
JANA OF THE JUNGLE was a short-lived series that lasted 13 episodes. This animated series was part of THE GODZILLA ADVENTURE HOUR that ran on Saturday Mornings for NBC's schedule for cartoons from September 9,1978 until December 13,1978.
Actually, it’s final episode aired on December 16TH of 1978, due to the fact that the 13TH of that month was on a Wednesday, in accordance with the Gregorian calendar. I should know because May 5TH of 1979 was on a Saturday.
@Tizmaole Me too! I saw so many of those cartoons which were Saturday morning when I was too young (to have seen them on Saturday morning) on USA CARTOON EXPRESS!
While raising my kids in the 1980s and 1990s, I remember a time when USA Cartoon Express was on both weekends as well as weekdays (both mornings and evenings).
Yes, WB should put this rare classic series out on dvd in retail stores, otherwise if Warner Archive puts it out on dvd, it’s strictly mail order only, and not available in retail stores. Sorry.
NBC's decision to cancelled JANA resulted by the network to expand it's animated GODZILLA show to 90 minutes. In the process JANA was replaced in the new installment with animated re-runs of JONNY QUEST and HONG KONG PHOOEY. Not to even mention Hanna-Barbera's rehash with repeated episodes of the animated version based on THE HARLEM GLOBETROTTERS.
@rayssonation Around that time NBC also showed old episodes of Hanna-Barbera series from the late 1960's: Space Ghost and Frankenstein Jr..They also showed old episodes of The Alvin Show (made by Format Films) from the early 1960's. I wonder if NBC had a shortage of new Saturday morning programs?
As a kid I use to wonder seeing Jana in the outfit. If any of the animals in the Jungle like Tico or any of them used to tickle Janas armpits, legs or the bottoms of her bare feet.
@LB74 No, Jana was not in Superfriends (I made that mistake too). We were thinking of Rima, another jungle queen. She paired up with Wonder Woman to rescue some explorers who'd been arrested by a tribe for mistakenly desecrating sacred relics. Mind you, I would have liked to see Jana in Superfriends. Maybe she could have teamed up with Apache Chief or Batman and Robin.
Strange? The only character named Rima that I know of is the one portrayed by the late actress Audrey Hepburn in the 1959 MGM romance adventure drama movie of “GREEN MANSIONS”.
That would have been a little hard to do, since Jana was in South America and Tarzan was in Africa. I think they were also separated by 60 years or so,
@Crusadist1099 Disney's Hercules TV series did a crossover with characters from Disney's Aladdin TV series. (Though it was really only Aladdin, Jasmine, Abu and the flying carpet. All that's seen of the genie is one of his arms, which comes out of his lamp and punches either Pain or Panic.)
@MichaelGaribaldi and @michaelpowell5266 Ted Cassidy also reprised his role as Lurch in the "Scooby Doo Meets The Addams Family" episode of The New Scooby Doo Movies, which aired on Boomerang as part of "Scoobtober" in October. John Astin, Carolyn Jones and Jackie Coogan also reprised their roles, and all of them got top billing on the opening title card.
On January 8, 2024, Boomerang started airing Yogi's Space Race. The episode "The Pongo Tongo Classic" includes a guest appearance by Jana of the Jungle, who rescues most of the racers from "space apes" by throwing her necklace like a boomerang (like Lynda Carter's Wonder Woman throwing her tiara before Jana of the Jungle, and Xena throwing her chakram nearly 20 years later). (So far Yogi's Space Race has also had guest appearances by Fred Flintstone and Barney Rubble, and even Grape Ape.)
Who can possibly forget about “YOGI’S SPACE RACE”? You had Yogi Bear teamed up Scare Bear (a sidekick from his Galaxy Goof-Ups show) together with fellow Galaxy Goof-Ups Huckleberry Hound and Quackers Duck. Plus, you had Nugget Nose aka The Galloping Ghost teamed up with those two groovy ladies Rita and Wendy; also Jabberjaw was teamed up with the bloodhound named Buford. Then you had the characters of Captain Good and Clean Cat who at the press of a button became the Phantom Fink and Sludge. “THE PONGO TONGO CLASSIC” is the most unforgettable episode in that series, however, through Amateur Genealogy 101, I found out that Nugget Nose’s friend Wendy is a long lost first cousin to Jana. Other first cousins of theirs include Pepper and Dottie from “CLUE CLUB”, April from “FUNKY PHANTOM”, Laurie from “INCH-HIGH PRIVATE EYE”, Rosemary from “HONG KONG PHOOEY”, Taffy from “CAPTAIN CAVEMAN & THE TEEN ANGELS”, Melody from “JOSIE & THE PUSSYCATS”, Merilee from “BUTCH CASSIDY & THE SUNDANCE KIDS”, Fred from “SCOOBY-DOO”, and finally, Jonny from “JONNY QUEST”.
I thought Janna was hot, and my friends thought I was a twisted freak for being attracted to a cartoon. Janna also had more depth than the average Hanna-Barbera character.
The first time I heard about this show was on a radio talk show when they were talking about old cartoons. One of the callers said he had a crush on Jana of the Jungle as well.
This was part of the Godzilla show right? So it would have been designed and directed by Doug Wildey who gave us JONNY QUEST, GODZILLA, RETURN TO THE PLANET OF THE APES and other great cartoons made for tv.
I wish they would, too, but it's not likely. Not even Cartoon Network has ever shown Jana. It's thanks to USA Cartoon Express that I even got to see it.
Couple of things jump out at me watching this as an adult. 1. Um..your Dad is clearly dead from the intro and 2. It's possible your name is not "Jana" and she really can't control and call animals.. You got some serious PTSD.- "Jana Of The Jungle-directed by Rian Johnson."
I remember one episode where she swam faster than a sprinting man,and has a good underwater fight with a crocodile. The other episode where she dives in a lagoon and rescues her companion while fighting off a great white shark underwater.....what???
They still exist in the vault, why Cartoon Network or Boomerang chose not to air this one remains a mystery but the good news is that the Warner Archive has Jana on the list of Hanna Barbera series they own and DO plan to one day put on DVD. So it'll be available at some point in the future....problem being that could be years, but eventually is better than never at all.
Try scaring up a first edition copy of the book “GREEN MANSIONS” as well as a copy of the movie on dvd starring Audrey Hepburn as Rima. You might find it interesting enough, more or less.
Yes, the father must be dead. But like so many real-life people, Jana obviously won't accept that and will keep looking and waiting for him. And Jana was typical of a lot of '70s Saturday morning cartoons where the heroes are seeking something, but never find it.
Well, be that as it may, he might have floated into the uncharted river canyon that the Butler family disappeared in, which led to them going into the valley of the dinosaurs. So basically, somehow Hong Kong Phooey winds up making an emergency landing of his Phooeycopter in the valley of the dinosaurs, some years after the Butler family and their stone age friends saved Jana’s father. Eventually, Spot the Police Cat (Phooey’s sidekick who does all the work while Phooey takes all the credit) manages to repair the Phooeycopter in time to fly out of the valley of the dinosaurs, and Jana’s father tags along with them. Before too long, they land safely at the veterinary compound of Dr. Ben Cooper, and before too long, father and daughter are reunited. Ofcourse, he is amazed that Jana has grown into such a fine specimen of womanhood. Furthermore, he also learns that Jana’s happily married to Henry Chan, the son of his old college roommate Charlie Chan aka The Amazing Chan of “THE AMAZING CHAN & THE CHAN CLAN”. After a good shaving of his face and thensome with the help of Jana’s sister-in-law Anne Chan (who’s now Mrs. Ben Cooper), he’s presentable enough for a press conference to announce that he’s alive as well as Jana. It should be obvious that at the time that they were separated from one another, Jana was around ten or eleven years old. Ofcourse, her golden blonde tresses were a bit shorter about that time, which means that prior to setting off on their river journey, Jana’s mother possibly had cut off the younger Jana’s hair because she obviously felt like it would be too hot for her to wear it so long, more or less. Anyway, there’s also the possibility that the judge permitted Jana to be with her father until the custody issue of her parents’ divorce could be settled properly. All these details are worth investigating regardless. Now, do we possibly have any fellow fans out there who would like to submit a series of stories to www.fanfiction.net, in order to shed light on the possibilities in question?
Ofcourse, there’s still the possibility that he floated into the uncharted river canyon the Butler family was exploring when they got caught in a whirlpool that put them in the valley of the dinosaurs?
You could be right. As I hate when a heroes never finds what their looking for, I sometimes just try to FORGET about the plot and just focus on how I enjoy certain episodes.
Nope, Tarzan 'hung-out' with the Lone Range, Zorro, Batman and the Super Seven (Freedom Force, Super Stretch and Micro Woman, & Mantr and Morey) all by Filmation. Jana I believe was by Ruby-Spears.
Clearly one of those animation secrets no doubt. Thus, if a theatrical movie version of the series was made in live action, Anna Kournikova would be great as Jana since they’re both blondes.
Still possible, unless he wound up floating into the uncharted river canyon and possibly awoke in the valley of the dinosaurs after being rescued by the Butler family who disappeared years before while exploring the uncharted river canyon itself in general.
At least this supports the possibility theory of her father floating into the uncharted river canyon and possibly winding up in the valley of the dinosaurs where he was rescued by the Butler family who disappeared while exploring the uncharted river canyon in question.
Wow. A great female super hero, there wasn't too many of them around. Man, did I use to enjoy watching this. I think she and Tarzan appeared togethor in one programme. Can anyone confirm this?
@misstoppertop No, that was Tarzan and the Super 7 from rival studio Filmation. The Super 7 segments had quite a few female superheroes in them: Web Woman, Manta and Moray, husband and wife Superstretch and Microwoman, and Freedom Force, which included Isis, who had previously appeared in live action as part of The Shazam/Isis Power Hour. Filmation also gave us The Young Sentinels (aka The Space Sentinels), which included Astrea, who could transform into animals AND fly when she was in human form.
@battywattywoo Same reason why Warner Bros won't release The World's Greatest Superfriends season & why Disney who bought the Marvel Toons won't release my all time fav Spiderman and his amazing friends/ '80's Hulk. Stupid. Silly. This was a great cartoon with great HB animation. The walking and swinging portions are very realistic and seemless.
Yeah! But the role she was really made famous for is the Princess Allura of Voltron. Both girls are not only beautiful, but also kick butt! Oh if you want my opinon, they're both hot. LOL!
@mechasertai In the 1950's there was a live action TV series called Sheena, Queen of the Jungle (starring Irish McCalla), which I think was adapted from a comic book. So the "jungle girl" genre has been around for a long time.
In spite of this, the only Rima I know about is the one portrayed by the late actress Audrey Hepburn in the classic 1959 MGM romance adventure drama movie of “GREEN MANSIONS”.
You shut up right now! It will never matter how bad you want to show this to your daughter. You don't tell the people in charge what to do! They'll put it on DVD only if they want to!
This is due to studio neglect to give some closer to their product either because of economy or sloppiness of the the story writers some shows like The Puppy's further Adventures in the 80's or Jumanji in the 90's break up the monotony. Justice League gives probably the best way to end a series.
