Welcome back to our series: Jana Reacts! In this series I continue on my journey of sharing progressive rock to my decidedly "non-prog" wife. In this video, we are featuring "Inca Roads" by Frank Zappa! Watch to see how my wife feels about her first dedicated listen to this prog rock gem!

Swear to God that this is not an exaggeration: the guitar solo makes me goosebumps each time I heard it. I can see a starred abyss when the guitar starts to sound. He actually gave us a glimpse of an alien civilization.

This entire album is a masterpiece musically, you can't go wrong with anything from One Size Fits All. Outsiders who know of Zappa tend to think he was some kind of offbeat novelty act, when in reality he was a perfectionist who employed fantastic musicians to realize his many diverse fabulous ideas. I mean, name one other rock musician of the time who could even remotely imagine and produce something so musically gorgeous and amusing and rich and complex as what you just heard here

I love watching folks hearing Frank Zappa for thew first time! You two did well - Frank is not for everyone. But if you like what you heard, you could be rewarded with a library that will take you the rest of your life to get familiar with. As you said, Frank is very well respected - often referred to as the greatest composer of the 20th Century.

In Zappa there's both. Intense seriously written material, and also at times he lets the musicians themselves be themselves. He has the insight to see what musician has to offer, or has the ability to play what he demands. There's no way out. When you get hired by him, he's gonna make you better than you ever were, and bring out the best in you, and make it fricken fantastic.! He knows.....

I think Jana would appreciate "Blessed relief", a quite clean jazz piece - but the Zappa way - and I wouldn't be surprised if it is new to Nathan too. It is 8 min instrumental from "The grand wazoo" 1972. Its not to weird and "medium" complicated. But like most Zappa songs, you will not grasp it after one listening.

Don't forget Watermelon in Easter Hay. Dweezil and Ahmet had a VH1 show, and Dweezil and Moon had at least a pilot for a sitcom aired. Frank had a lot of well known musicians play with him at one point... George Duke sang and played keyboards on this one, Steve Vai, Jean Luc Ponty and Adrian Belew among many others played with the various bands as well.

Some fairly well known musicians played with Frank. Flo and Eddie (aka Howard Kaylan and Mark Volman of the Turtles, they got sued by their former record company and couldn't use their real names for several years), Steve Vai (virtuoso guitarist), George Duke (keyboardist) and Jean-Luc Ponty (violinist), to name but a few.

George Duke(deserves a few reactions on his jazz/blues too) is the keyboard player and does most of the vocals. It was the beginning of the synthesiser as a major influence as apposed to an organ. Frank is the phenomenal guitarist and wrote virtually every damn note you hear. The amazing Ruth Underwood on percussion, xylophone. That was so weird.... Most of Zappa is very far left field. You have to have a sense of humour (and a master's degree in music composition can help .... but not always) to get into Zappa. I have a suggestion.... Gravity by Max Webster may be the right balance for your lovely lady to enjoy and you to discover. The band and the leader (Kim Mitchell quite a guitarist in his own right) did a duet with Rush who "Max" opened for on a number of occasions. {The duet is a Max tune.... BattleScar}. On of their mellow tunes... On The Road Enjoy (Canadian in Portugal)

I’ve loved some of Zappa’s stuff for a long time. There is a ton from him I still need to check out (I’m slowly making my way through his discography). Funny that Inca Roads came up because One Size Fits All is the latest album I got into. Very solid overall. It you haven’t heard Over-Nite Sensation I would definitely recommend it. One of his best and most accessible (that I’ve heard so far).

The amazing thing about this song is that the song on the album is actually a live concert with some studio overdubs. The song is probably 95% live performance with a guitar solo from another concert inserted into the version from the concert used for the album. The original take of this is on RU-vid as the music video for Inca Roads. You'll notice there is a different guitar solo in the music video from the album.

As a Zappa fan for over 50 years now I will say that One Size Fits All is a good starting point for understanding Frank and his music. It is overall accessible but shows his range in styles. If you want a "jump into the deep end" understanding of Frank listen to the We're Only In It For The Money LP. All the songs roll into each other, and it covers pretty much everything he will ever do.

Oh yeah the the Dweezil he's carrying on the Legacy it's amazing that he can actually play on so many of Zappos compositions even get some of the old guys to play with somebody's got another band no you got to tell your dear wife here this is Scout named Ruth Underwood she was married to the sax player from the original mothers and anyway she's the one playing the fives or the Glockenspiel or the xylophone whatever you want to call it and all that stuff is written out and she's doing it perfect perfectly so and also you got George Duke who's a very notable keyboard player for Zapdos the guitar solo sorry that was a Google glitch yeah I mean it's funny they have this one guy who's up a music expert and he was he was calling off all the different time signatures in the song that was really an amazing video but you got to realize they know Sapa started back in like late 1965 or early 66 their first album was such a landmark freak out in fact The Beatles. Pretty much for inspired to do Sergeant Pepper's because of the Freak Out album Paul McCartney said yeah we're going to do our freak out I think he actually did 60 records during his lifetime I know your wife's going to like a lot of their his stuff of course this was a very complex piece but you know it's about UFOs and aliens so it's no wonder that it would be a strange number but yeah TNT you know you hear him say on roof on Ruth bob thought up up that's Ruth because they were just complimenting her on how hard she worked to do such an amazing feat of just to be able to play that kind of music at that level is just incredible

I would start with the groovin pop rock Sheik Yer bouti album first, for laymen listeners, first, THEN get to the unique ,or shall we say, "ëxotic" material! Go right in and play the entire Sheik Yer Bouti album, for your partner. Forget the rest, FOR NOW! Let's get a laymens response of good groovin teenage rock! She'll love some songs with the added aberrated and subversive "twist"" that zappa includes in his music. ""He always threw a wrench in it to try to ruin the beauty of what he wrote, cause he told me"", ""it sounds too beautiful", "it has to be ruined" , quote by keyboardist George Duke. You forgot to tell your partner he also did hard rock and some heavy metal! Greatest composers of all time: 1 - Beethoven.2 - Stravinsky. 3 - Zappa. Yes, Dweezil is not only his son but tours with his band called '"Zappa plays Zappa".

unfortunately his music is not unconventional nor are his lyrics silly. did you know he never wrote a love song. how many artists have released the ocean of work he released and never wrote a love song? it is the radio stations that have controlled your mind (generally speaking) to listen to the crap they want you to listen to. Remember the PMRC? if more people listened to what Frank Zappa was doing and paid attention. music today would be in a better place. F.Z. once said "somebody out there in that audience knows what we are doing, and that person is getting off on it, beyond his or her wildest belief" F.Z. is not for every one. IMHO that is because his music is far too intellectual for you. Frank Zappa feared no one! take that Warner Brothers!
