Hello and welcome back to Lady Disdain Reads. Today we discuss a book of literary criticism on Austen by Sarah Emsley. I really enjoyed her work on Austen and philosophy, which expands on ideas proposed by Alasdair MacIntyre, and this video is my comprehensive overview of what I agree (which is most of the book) and disagree with. I hope you enjoy!
Sarah Emsley: Jane Austen and the Philosophy of the Virtues (2005)
Aristotle: Greek Philosopher (384-322 BC). My videos on Jane Austen and Ethics all contain information about Aristotle’s conception of the virtues, from which virtues he considers to which vices he places as the two extremes on either side of the virtuous mean.
Thomas Aquinas: medieval philosopher, theologian, and Doctor of the Church (1225-1274).
Virtuous mean: the Aristotelean idea that a virtue (e.g. temperance) is the middle quality between two vices, one being the lack or deficiency of that quality (e.g. insensibility), the other its extreme or excess (e.g. self-indulgence).
Irene Collins: British historian, author of Jane Austen: The Parson’s Daughter (1998) and Jane Austen and the Clergy (1994)
Frances Burney: English novelist and playwright (1752-1840)
Samuel Richardson: English novelist and printer (1689-1761)
Starting quotation from Pride and Prejudice: ‘I am only resolved to act in that manner, which will, in my own opinion, constitute my happiness, without reference to you, or to any person so wholly unconnected to me.'

I never leave comments on RU-vid, but I need to this time, to say that your insight is exactly what I've been looking for to complement my reading of Austen's works! Thank you so much for your videos! This is the first one I've seen but I already know I'll be watching a lot more!

I found your channel after a search for Sarah Emsley’s book. I have very much enjoyed listening to your views on Austen and Virtue ethics and I think what you are saying is quite important and has caused me to reread Austen with a fresh perspective. I have a post graduate background In Victorian literature and history and find your insights fascinating. May I recommend a substantial and significant work which addresses some of Macintyre’s post "After Virtue" views on Christianity, and Thomism in particular. “Sources of Christian Ethics” by Dominican scholar Servais Pinckaers is the book. Macintyre thought so much of Pinckaers’ work that he supplied an introduction to an abbreviated version of the work. That is called “Morality: The Catholic View”. Pinckaers supplies a detailed account of the development and rejection of virtue in the church over the centuries as well as its recent tentative acceptance. Perhaps you are already familiar with Pinckaers' work. It adds to Macintyre’s developing philosophical insights in the 40 years since After Virtue. Keep up the good work.

Hi Michael! I confess I'm not familiar with Pinckaers' work, but I'm thrilled that you are recommending something for me to discover. My husband is a theologian so I bet he knows about him! If you have any more recommendations please send them my way - I'm starting a PhD soon and the more I read the better!
