I can't wait! I'll be reading the last full novel of Jane Austen's I have left--Persuasion. I'm a little sad but I'm also thrilled because I have such a good feeling about Persuasion. I've been squirreling away books for Jane Austen July for a little while now. So excited!

Thanks so much for this. I discovered your challenge through Claudia from Spinster’s Library and it’s very exciting. Really looking forward to planning a month of Austen and the read-alongside and discussions. Very interested in in everything you mentioned. As for film and TV, one of my favourites is the 1995 BBC adaptation of Persuasion with Ciaran Hinds and Amanda Root. So glad you mentioned Lost in Austen because it was great fun!

I'm looking forward to joining you again in Jane Austen July. 😊 As July is a very busy month at work for me, I can only participate in two challenges. I'm going to re-read "Sense and Sensibility" and "What Matters in Jane Austen". I read Emma in March because I wanted to go and see the new screen adaptation which in the end, I couldn't do due to Corona😢

Congratulations on five years, Katie! I’ve been a subscriber a long time, and thoroughly enjoy all of your content. You make it seem so effortless, but I’m sure a lot of thought goes into preparing these videos. Your Behind The Scenes At Books and Things video was an eye opener for me as to how much is involved in every video. One of my many favorite videos was the shot of you sitting at Elizabeth Gaskell’s desk. Thank you for responding to every one of my comments.

I'm so excited for this - literally can't wait. I'll be joining in Jane Austen July this year and have just joined the Goodreads group :) I've read all her novels but are looking forward to re-reading 1 or 2 of them (probably will do the P&P read with you as I love it so much, it's my favourite) and discovering her other works. I've read a lot of her contemporaries already as I did my Dissertation at uni on Women writers in the C.18th... I loved doing it and discovered some fabulous authors in the process including Maria Edgeworth (her novel 'Belinda' is brilliant) and Frances Burney and Mary Brunton and Ann Radcliffe. In terms of non-fiction I love Lucy Worsley and will probably seek out that book to hers that you linked in the description. I've favourited this video and will probs watch it several more time before July :) I love your enthusiasm in videos and always enjoy watching you - it makes me more excited for my reading. Looking forward to seeing more of your videos throughout July. Thank you

I am so excited for this! I have been looking forward to this all year. I have never participated but I am excited to be a part this year. I love Jane Austen and just recently read all her published and some unpublished works. After reading her published works I made lists ranking my favorite characters. I have watched your ranking videos and I enjoyed those. In my lists, I also tried to think about lessons I learned from the characters (as part of my evaluation of each character). So, for instance, one lesson you can learn from Elizabeth Bennet (and Mr. Darcy) is to check your bias and see how it is or could be impacting your decisions and actions. I think that could be a fun video for you and I would love to see how each character has impacted you, and what lesson(s) you take away from them. :)

I am so glad I found this channel today and in time for Jane Austen July!! I would love it if you could film some _educational_ content on her novels in the sense of discussing key themes, metaphors, etc. I'd love to see some literary analysis of the works from your perspective. :)

Thanks! I've done some videos on class/money (ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-0UQ0IAOf2go.html) and marriage (ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-qFt5bafveMM.html) in Jane Austen before and I have some other thematic ideas for this year. I'll freely admit that I'm not the best at close textual analysis though - definitely more comfortable talking about themes than metaphors and literary devices!

im SO excited for this!! thank u for sharing so many recommendations 🙌 john mullans book is one of my favourite things ever - hes quickly become one of my fav literary critics and ever since ive been trying to read everything hes ever written on austen (there are a lot of fun videos of him on youtube talking about austen too if youre interested ☺) id love to see a video about how jane austen has been seen as both a progressive and a conservative at the same time. a lot of people are like "well all her books always end with her heroines marrying, thats not very feminist" but then of course others point to the incisive ways she writes about women and matters of social class. that austen can be viewed as part of both camps has always been so interesting to me!

I will definitely join :) I've been meaning to reread (if possible) all her novels, became I've read What matters in Jane Austen recently (it was your recommendation ;) ) and I felt such love for all the novels again and missed reading my favorites and thought I should give a reread to the ones I didn't particularly loved the first time around, now that I feel I understand better the themes aimed there and nuances I had missed. That is really a great book, the best part was seeing how Jane Austen "manipulated" us into feeling more or less empathy for a certain character just by changing the way they're mentioning: Charlotte/Miss Lucas for instance. It is brilliant :)

Looking forward to Jane Austen July as usual!! One P&P retelling I enjoyed last year was Fair Stands the Wind, where Darcy is in the Navy and is the second son - I loved it! Haven’t found any retellings of her other books I liked though unfortunately. Would you do a video on Jane Austen places that you’ve been? Last year I went on a Jane Austen trip around the south of England and it was the best holiday ever, I thought if I did make videos it would have been such a good bookish vlog! Bath was my favourite, but obviously also Chawton and it was so cool to go to other lesser known places like Box Hill and the cobb in Lyme Regis!

So, I haven't been to as many Jane Austen places as I'd like to have. I used to live in Bath, but to my shame I've never been to Chawton or Lyme Regis. I have been to Box Hill when I was little but I don't really remember it!

I'm thrilled! I just read Pride and Prejudice for the first time and watched the 1995 adaptation and completely fell in love with it (of course). I loved Pride and Prejudice so much, I ordered Emma online and it'll arrive soon! It's the first time I'll be able to participate in your challenges and can't wait to start reading by your side. I bought it in the original language, another reason why I'm excited. I read Pride and Prejudice in Portuguese, beautifully translated but I'm glad I could buy Emma in English, it's always nice when you can read in the original language, specially since I'll be accompanying you (I can only read in English, French and, of course, Portuguese).

Huzzah, Huzzah, Huzzah! Really not fair that I cannot find a copy of Charlotte anywhere. Online it says to pre-order. I’m in! It is finally (FINALLY!) time for me to re-read Pride and Prejudice. I just watched Clueless for the millionth time last night, so it might be time for me to finally read Emma, too. An adaptation of Sanditon aired here in the U.S. a few months ago that I really enjoyed. Has it aired in the UK? I’m sure the BBC had something to do with the production, but I’m not certain. I would also like to read a nonfiction book about Ms. Austen, but I’m not sure if I have enough time to squeeze it in. Thank you so much for your recommendations, though! I always enjoy listening to you talk about books; your joy always shines through the screen.

Enjoyed this video and especially you obvious enthusiasm for all things Jane Austen! You asked for ideas of Jane Austen related novels based on something other than Pride and Prejudice. I've written 2 or 3 that might interest you (as well as several others). "Murder at Northanger Abbey" is a just-published, fun-filled, slightly spooky sequel to NA. "The Persuasion of Miss Jane Austen" supposes that JA wrote "Persuasion" as a reflection of events in her own life. "Leap of Hope" is a time-travel escapade where a modern-day college girl is transported to Regency England, looking for a "Pride and Prejudice" kind of happy ending; instead she finds herself in a "Mansfield Park" scenario. All are highly rated, so I hope you will take a look. Best wishes, Shannon Winslow.

I've been meaning to read more of Jane Austen's books and hope I can join in. I recently bought a special edition of Persuasion which I'm eager to have. I couldn't resist recently buying two special editions of Pride and Prejudice which is still one of my favorites and probably will continue to be even after reading the other books though Persuasion will probably be up there as well. Might I suggest The Jane Austen Project by Kathleen A. Flynn? It's a story about two people who travel back to Jane's time in search of an unpublished novel and things don't go quite as expected. Also, I read a book called Searching For Captain Wentworth which is also about time travel in which the main character meets Jane and one of her brothers. Also looking forward to rewatching Pride and Prejudice as well as Sense and Sensibility, and Lost In Austen. I really enjoyed the Lizzie Bennett Diaries and even bought the book version of it. Thanks! So, I think when we were planning this, we wanted to do it either in December (the month Jane Austen was born) or July (the month where she died); we decided against December, because a lot of people are doing Christmas reading, so effectively it's in July because July is when the anniversary of Jane Austen's death is - but that's a bit morbid, so I don't tend to mention the reasoning!
@jairaugusto9289
@jairaugusto9289 4 года назад
here's my issue -- I've read three austen novels so far, and I'm going to read Persuasion for this challenge. but I'm afraid that if I pick up some non-fiction book about austen, I suppose I will spoil the story of the remaining two novels. usually I don't mind spoilers, but miss austen has been so special to me so far that the thought of a firsthand acquaintance with her characters' destinies by way of someone else's words gives me a most unusual pause. (I've been putting off reading an essay by gilbert ryle for precisely this reason) so maybe I will sorta skip this part of the challenge. :/
@katiejlumsden
@katiejlumsden 4 года назад
So, it is true that lots of Jane Austen critical non-fiction or biographies are a bit spoilery. You shouldn't read What Matters in Jane Austen until you've read all her work, certainly. But non-fiction about her time period should be same enough :)
