Jane Davenport Watercolor Review (In-Depth with comparisons)
Today I am taking an indepth look at the new watercolors from the Jane Davenport line of mixed media products from American Crafts sold at Micheals craft stores.
Neutral palette is on sale for $13 on amazon: amzn.to/2yILmqt
And the brights are on sale for $16: amzn.to/2zCoC8a
Disclaimer: This is a review, I bought these supplies with my own money and I was not asked to review them by the manufacturer, nor, was I compensated to. As always these opinions are my own and are not endorsed by American crafts or Micheals craft stores.
I am reviewing the two watercolor sets available in this line, the Brights and Neutrals. Pigment information available on Jane davenports website: janedavenport....
First a quick overview of each set:
Brights: 12 vivid transparent colors with cool undertones in a pretty teal blue metal tin. 8 out of the 12 colors are single pigments. Both best friend and Fairytale feature the pigment only as PR81 which is Rhodamine 6G, the Rhodimine die BV10 is what is added to Opera to give it its fluorescent glow, I wonder if additional BV10 might have been added to "best friend" to give it that punch, it is a pigment that dose not need to be listed on a label, just like PW$4 if used as a filler. I suspect if exposed to prolonged daylight "Best Friend" will deepen to the "Fairytale share" There are also 2 mixed colors that can be made from the other pigments in the set (70s eye shadow and jimminy can be mixed with the blue, green and yellow in this set.) That said these paints are marketed to artists that might not be interested in mixing colors and would rather have the convenience colors. To make this a more versatile set you could add a warm red and brown paint. The colors in this set mix very well and yield clear bright mixes. Skintones are possible with 3 and 4 color mixes. This set is perfect for flower painters.
Neutrals: 6 out of the 12 colors are single pigment colors. The primaries in this set yield warm oranges, and muted plums and greens. This set contains many convenience skin tones. This set is ideal for quickly coloring in people and portraits for people who don't want to mix colors. All of the colors have warm undertones but the red is fairly neutral so you can pink up cheeks in a portrait without it going too orange. 2 colors are redundant (buff and dove) as they can be made from colors in this kit. For versatility I'd add a cool red and pthalo green. Personally I don't care for the black, white and grey in this set as I don't often use those colors but this is geared to more of a graphic style of art and I think more crafters would appreciate them. These colors are semi transparent. This set comes in a brushed gold tin and would pair well with the bright shades of the mermaid markers or the other watercolor set.
Price: $29.99 (you can save 30%-60% with a coupon from Michales)
Bottom line, I think for the money they are a nice paint and I would place them among the same quality of Sonnett, Prima* or Koi* but bonus points that pigment info is provided for the Jane davenport paints. I think they are nice quality and definitely with the money on sale:) These colors glaze and lift well. I am happy I bought them.
How do Jane Davenport paints compare with Prima Marketing Color Confections? Well, what do you want to paint? Both the Jane Davenport and Prima paints have specific palettes for specific themes. Get what you like! The tins are nearly identical and the paints do indeed seem similar but after comparing them side by side I found some colors overlapped and some did not. Perhaps they are made by the same factory (it is a common practice for media products to be private labeled overseas by the same factory) but I can't say for sure. The texture of the dry paint was similar to the Pastel dreams Prima set but the Jane Davenport colors were more transparent and bright save for the light skin tones.

Hi Lindsay, thanks for including my watercolours in such an in-depth review! You got my intention behind the sets straight away : the palettes are Warm and Cool, with warm primaries in one, and cool in the other! They are an artist grade paint with limited fillers ( hence the nice washes as you said!), but i did specifically create them for newer creatives, so that they fall in LOVE with watercolour! (I also have my Jane Davenport Set with Schmincke and my Jane D set with Daniel Smith) for top-of-the-line). The skin tones you mixed were delicious! Unicorn, the white is a mixing white as you pointed out. I can't wait to see you taking the Mermaid Markers through their paces ( splashes!). xoxox Jane

Jane Davenport they are so awesome I love them for my art journal! The idea is great as they have freed me up so much as an artist! I used to stress about using super expensive paper and expensive paint. I felt such pressure to create art to sell when using my others. Now I am creating art just for me and I am happily filling up my awesome JD journal too. Thank you so much to you! 💕

+The Spin Doctor thanks! I am interested in your opinion on them. 2 colors have PR81 ad the pigment, one looks like a quin rose and one looks like opera. I wonder if it is the pr81 rhodimine giving the glow or additional bv10 which you told me dies not need to be declared on the label. Thoughts?
@TheSpinDoctor
@TheSpinDoctor 7 лет назад
thefrugalcrafter Lindsay Weirich There are 5 different PR81s - PR81 itself and then PR81:1 through PR81:4 - all are variations of Rhodamine 6G and Rhodamine YS. BV10 is Rhodamine B, which is the one mixed with either PR122 or PV19 to make Opera Rose sensu stricto.
@abbystevens5693
@abbystevens5693 7 лет назад
The Spin Doctor why that much different ones? do you know the backstory on that?
@TheSpinDoctor

Abby van der Pluijm There are dozens of Rhodamines - it is a family of dyes, each is slightly different in cost and colour and fluorescence etc.

Lindsay, this is the first really in-depth review of paints I have ever watched; oh boy! do I have a lot to learn! I came to art/art journalling in my early 60's and have been trying to balance actually using my supplies and also learning about the supplies. My technical understanding/background is almost non-existent, but you explained the techniques of colour mixing so well that I was able to grasp the concepts without a complete understanding of the technical side. I am encouraged to watch more of your videos to learn more! Thank you for your skill in guiding me down this new path of learning and understanding.

Thanks for this very thorough review! They are super pricey to get here and for that price I'd rather get an artist set or a couple of tubes of artist-grade paint. I love that the tins have fun colors and these two sets seem really nice for crafters and cardmakers :)

Lindsey, thank you! Great info..and I learned somethings about color mixing as well. I feel I can now make a much more informed purchase of watercolors. I also love knowing about the lightfastness. Mostly I learned that I need to search out information about color theory which will help me move forward with this medium. Your vlog helps me feel more informed and empowered in the properties of the various watercolors. Well done!

Thanks for the review. I swatched all 24 of the Jane Davenport watercolors on watercolor paper next to my Prima Confections. I found what I think are exact matches in the Primas for 23 out of 24 of the JD colors. Both are made in Korea, and the boxes are identical (except for the colors on the outsides of the boxes). But, they are really vibrant and are fun to use!

Michelle Connell which prima palettes do you have? I'm assuming tropics and decadent pies? Just curious because I bought these and I was thinking the same thing. I wanted to buy the primas just to play with for illustrating but I wouldn't buy the palettes that are duplicates.

+ Aimee Lindell I have all five of the Prima palettes. The colors that matched the JD watercolors were in the Classics (11), the Decadent Pies (6), and the Tropics (6). I did not find a color match in the Primas for the color "Frida".

Thanks for explaining so much beyond what colors were in these tins! I don't know anything about watercolors. My education in college mainly involved pencils, acrylics, and pottery. After I bought the mermaid markers I have decided to learn how to use watercolors now on my own. I appreciate you explaining light-fastness and pigments etc.!

I have plenty of watercolors, but I "needed" them (wanted) and I got them the day they came out from Michaels along with the Mermaid Markers and Iove them all! They are great for the price and the tins are just lovely! And funny that I may be bringing them with meto my trip to Korea in 2 months to not only paint, but to compare them also. And markers are definitely coming also because I think they'll be a staple in my travel pouch since they fitt with my pencils and other stuff in it. I'll be there for while so I hope I'll put them to good use. I always enjoy your review and comparison videos and how you give your honest opinion along with ideas of what to do. This is a great review thanks so much for posting it! I appreciate your insights and the direct comparisons to prima really helped me. I have all the Prima sets but I couldn't decide if it's worth me buying the Jane Davenports or just holding off and saving for higher grade watercolors. I think I might get the neutrals for the skintones but hold off on the brights. I'm still learning watercolors so I haven't pulled the trigger on investing in more expensive supplies.As it is I have more colors than I know what to do with!

PR571 is an odd one - it is a Naphthol Red AS but atypical in some way. I need to do some digging on that one. I am going to order these but in meanwhile I will post an analysis of the pigment information for those who want to know a bit more.

@TheSpinDoctor
@TheSpinDoctor 7 лет назад
thefrugalcrafter Lindsay Weirich I haven't yet as I was waiting for Amazon to stock them tbh for cost reasons ;) [i don't pay for shipping] Naphthol Reds don't appear in watercolour much - I think they might potentially [speculating] be a bit too soluble and vanish back into the paper and appear dull, but I'll check.

These are great! I hadn't heard of Jane until you did an unboxing she sent you a while back (I usually just watch your watercolor painting video's), so I went out and got my grand daughter a whole bunch of stuff! I'm not a crafter so I also had no idea what "washy tape" or any of that crazy stuff was, I just bought a bunch of whatever looked fun (and it ALL looks fun). I figured if she had all these great creative art supplies she would leave me and my expensive paints and papers alone...well, I am having just as much fun with Jane's line so now instead my grand daughter and I are working together! This is a wonderful family bonding line! I couldn't be happier!

two questions.. when you open the Jane Palette does the four divot mixing side tilt down toward the table, or do they stay parallel to the bottom of the box ( or the table: like the prima's do) and, can you really fit another row of pans down the middle which is something quite unique to the prima palette ? thanx

I honestly wouldn’t care if your review was 2 hours long. I just like having you on in the background as I go about my day. Sometimes I’m really paying attention and others I feel like I’m just learning by osmosis. I always come away with something 😊

I'm new and know nothing about watercolors. I got the prima because of reviews, the tin, and the colors. I got the brights on Amazon for 14.99 and the tropical for about 20.00. I'm looking forward to using them.

Lindsay- I think your mission, should you choose to accept it, is to do a video on painting(patina ?), decorating or somehow making our black watercolor tins look more artsy and fun !!! What do you think? Absolutely love all of your videos. Thanks for being you. Martha

I was thinking of buying bright pastel spray paint shades and spray painting my prima ones! Yellow, Mellon, Mint, peach, lilac, they would be so pretty!

Just wanted to say in case someone came across this now but Prima does list paint pigments on their website now for each of their confections sets. (They definitely didn't used to)

QUESTION In the neutral palette what is the light fastness rated for the skin tones? If it's not high enough I'd rather mix my own.

I am super late to the ballgame, but I would love to know what more common colors these are similar to like what you have written on your swatch. Unfortunately, it's never shown fully or well enough to read what you have written. Can you list them? Thanks so much! You are so awesome!

Lindsey, i know this vid is old but its really great. Im new to mixed media & always loved watercolors so i want to learn. I picked up prima complexions cuz as u said, as beginner didnt want to struggle mixing skin tones. Love flowers too, & today a distant michaels has janes brights collection. When u said add a couple warms like red & brown do u mean thst somewhere they sell small pans to fit or do u mean tubes? As a beginner w those two sets am i missing anything else vital to start out? Your videos are great & the time w yours goes quickly! Lol!

She had me at the tins for these too! lol I was really hoping that they would be wonderful watercolors but I was prepared to put my own in the tin if need be. I am so in love with the watercolors in them though! I also bought the mermaid markers and the art journal and more. lol I am such a fan girl when it comes to Jane, I might end up with everything. ;) Thank you for the in depth review!!

Well spotted - PR81 is Rhodamine 6G - not the same rhodamine used in Opera Rose but very similar.

thefrugalcrafter Lindsay Weirich It lacks the PV19 of Opera Rose but will give a similar effect, especially in natural or fluorescent lighting or bulbs with a lot of blue in them. May seem a bit lifeless in mixtures though as the PV19 is what helps it compete and not get washed out really.

Thank you so much for the in depth review. I am new to water color and your videos are very informative. Thank you for sharing your expertise with us. It helps save us money and frustrations. I just got this set and found it is very grainy in it's pan, and leaves 'sand' on my brush and thus a weird texture on my paper. Even though I am a 'hobby' painter, and new, seeing this kind of poor quality marketed to us; because of the 'low' price point, is disheartening. Do you think the Winsor Newton cotman half pans are smoother and worth it as a starter set?
@thefrugalcrafter
@thefrugalcrafter 7 лет назад
cotmans are what I teach with, they are a great starting set and you can upgrade to artists one color at a time as you use them up:)
@facepalmer351

Thank you for your reply. I am looking at the cotmans, and white knights, as well as van gogh. DId you find the Prima pan set was grainy too?

Thanks Lindsay! I managed to snag both palettes this Saturday for 60% each so I feel from your review I will keep them. For the price I can't beat them even if I do have some overlap with the Prima's. I agree about the cuteness factor😂😂. Can't wait for the review on the Mermaid Markers. Got those at 60% off as well but since I have Dylan Reevely's sprays in water brushes am wondering if I NEED them?

Hi Lindsay! Thank you for the fantastic video! Love that it was nice and long! Could you please tell me why you draw the black lines through the paint swatches and what glazing is? Or point me to a video you have done that explains it? Hope I'm not being a pain. Thanks! You're a peach! Oh, almost forgot.
