Every Jane’s show back in the day was like a gathering of the tribes. The punks, metalheads, skaters, goths, hair metal and glam rockers, the potheads and hippies, college and indie rockers… from industrial fans to new wavers, surfers to hardcores, gays to straights, dopers to the D&D geeks, and everything in between. It was just a glorious mix of every subcultural group of the time…. And it was their music that was the one thing everyone could agree on.

Not to talk s*it about modern music, but I will. Bands that you can put the CD on and not have to skip songs are very uncommon now days. Jane's was never one of those. Good for listening, good for s"xy time, just good all around. So much energy from all of the members. It should be required listening for all.

...and kids this is exactly what a Jane's show looked like when I saw em in '88. As a 20 year old metal head I thought this was like Aerosmith on acid. I saw them at the Metropol in Pittsburgh. Coolest thing was the pit would slow down with the pace of the songs, like everyone was moshing in slow motion. Then it would speed back up as soon as the songs got faster. If you're 20 years old right now as we speak, go find something like this. You'll be 53 years old someday too, and it rocks to have great memories!

StateLaughter: "Ritual..." was my intro into J.A. of course after the release of the "Been Caught Stealing" single, but once I got "Nothing's Shocking", I knew immediately that it was the superior album of the two -- the latter isn't as coherent a composition as the former and hasn't aged as well as its predecessor has. The self-titled live debut album is better than "Ritual...", too!

I was at this show. No surprise for me because I had been following Perry since his previous band Psi Com. And I love how Angelo from Fishbone is up on stage too. In fact, that's how I found out about Jane's Addiction was from Norwood of Fishbone. I had seen Fishbone open up for Camper Van Beethoven at Madame Wong's (I think) in 1984 before Fishbone had released anything. I had no idea who Fishbone was. Hell, nobody did! But I'll never forget about 3 of the guys (probably Chris, Angelo, and ... Walt) came on stage doing head over heels cartwheels which just showed how much energy I was in for. Yeah, they BLEW ME AWAY! I ended getting to know them and then I ended up driving those guys around town to shows for about 4-5 months because none of them owned a car at the time, and I did. I even drove all of them all the way from where they rehearsed at The Fishbowl (Norwood and Fish's big green apartment building off La Cienga Blvd I think) all the way to UC Irvine where a friend of mine was a DJ at the time, DJ'ing as Carlos Marx (Tony Ozuna). It was a crack up as Fishbone took over the building and show. My friend briefly interviewed them but all they wanted to do was play music, and they did! I discovered Funkadelic Maggot Brain that night :-) Anyway, fast forward to what ... 1986, I had known about Psi Com breaking up when I saw Norwood at a show and he tells me Perrys got a new band together and I should check them out. So, I went to the very first Jane's show ever. Looking at google maps just now I think it was the building on the NW corner of Hollywood Blvd and Las Palmas. I just remember the show was located in a building that looked like the one currently at Hollywood n Las Palmas. The show was on the 2nd story above what was at that time a shoe store. And now appears to be a market (me editing this in 2020). Walking up to pay the door girl was topless. Very cool start :-) Anyway, I remember the place was FULL of helium filled balloons across the ceiling and was a damn good show. So much so that I have easily seen Jane's Addiction more than any other band in my life. As for this Mountain Song show, I wish I could see myself in this video. There is only one possible time I might be in this because I was standing on a small table against the back wall where it is very dark. I think at one point I saw my silhouette but ??? I just remember it so absolutely jam packed I saw the table and climbed on top. I'm a tall dude too but it was stifling down below. And those 2 chicks @ 02:06 ... it was like everything froze when they walked in. I remember me and my friend Dave just slack jawed when we saw them ... like WHO ARE THOSE GIRLS?!? They were part of Perry's entourage and they would be at just about every show from then on. Never met them though ... not sure why. I do hope it doesn't sound like I'm bragging or anything. It's just the memories I have as THOSE were the days to roughly quote Classic Girl. Then years later at the 2nd Coachella ever in ... 1999, 2000? Perry was playing so I found the tent he was in an went up to him and asked "Perry, how's it going? Do you remember me?" He looked at me and said "Uh ... your smile looks familiar". I was somewhat shocked as I used to talk to him all-the-time. But then again I had heard and read that he was going to Bali A LOT doing all sorts of drugs so ... who knows. Then again, I was just a hanger on always talking to the musicians but never participating in the music itself so ... maybe that's it. Whatever, he remembered my smile ... I'll take it :-) Thing is, I bet if I saw any of the guys from Fishbone they would all remember me. Especially Angelo or Norwood. Those guys were very cool and cracked me up! Yes ... memories.

Back in the day when snowboarders weren't allowed to ride the lifts in resorts we had to hike many mountains to ride. I had this song on repeat in my head as I hiked my ass up the mountains of Tahoe to rip it up in the backcountry. Then suddenly 1990 and it all changed.

At 42, I definitely would love to relieve me of the 80s. But then I ask you: How is this possible listening, sounds like that classic Jane's? Surely, if I reach 80 I ll say that this time I listened, danced, freaked my head and enjoyed my 17 years of age. Long live the good old rock 'n roll!

The music, the surrealism… while seemingly chaotic, has profound meaning and depth. It’s a manifestation of Perry’s grief and trauma. As you can see in the video everyone is tripping on drugs and going out of their minds. Perry’s physical, violent convulsions are amalgamated with a kind of spiritual ascension that expresses a divine, poetic sound that resonates with so many people. Coming down the mountain is a reference to coming down from being high on heroin, and how difficult that is. In an interview, Perry said that “everybody has their own opinion” and “cash in now, honey” is a tribute to his late mother, who committed suicide when he was a child. Each of us has his or her own opinion if life is worth living or not, and she decided to cash in. It’s so profoundly sad. Perry has sacrificed his pain for the benefit of our own redemption. I’ve never done heroin, or any other hard drugs, but when I listen to this song, Perry takes me with him on that ride and it transcends all the stuff that I’m dealing with… it’s so empowering.

Hardcore was pretty powerful too at the time. Much more raw and literally "hardcore" than glam bullshit. Glam was never hardcore as hardcore punk was so hardcore that it paved way for grunge and alot of metal.

I'm so grateful for Jane's Addiction. They have many great tracks, but this is in the top 5, for sure. I feel like I know quite a bit about rock music and so I can honestly say I don't think there's another band like them. Matchless. (I'm not saying that because so much of social media uses "Best. Band. Everrrrrr!" these days.) They're abstract, sexy, aggressive, whimsical at times, psychedelic - and put together in a way where I'm left wondering, "I don't know how they put all these things together and pulled it off, but it's sooooo great."
