Perry Farrell is the only singer who can successfully transcend intonation. This is pure art. Be glad if you were there to experience this as it happened.
i guess Im asking randomly but does someone know of a tool to log back into an instagram account?? I was dumb lost my login password. I appreciate any assistance you can give me
Three Days Then she Did Classic Girl are on the album in that order for a reason i swear on everything....sonic anointment. You get so lost in it that you miss the song transitions entirely. Takes you on a journey on some astral shit. Real talk. JA been there with me threw so many phases of my life. They a part of me, a part of who i am on some real shit. #allthefeels
@@markbabin3753 I think of course was last song on side A.. think 3 days kicked off side B @laurie s.. I just reconnected with the song and brings me back...don't know how forgot about it. I hear the feelz on those 3 songs. Much needed.
Yeah. It’s kinda painful for me, the nostalgia is thick & heavy. I’m glad I went to their 1st Lollapalooza & saw smaller venues. 🤔There’s still great music tho 🥰we just have to find it differently!
Yeah, I didn't realize it at first but Perkins is a superb drummer. He does a killer version of "Who Are You" by the Who on here if you want to give that a try. It's just him solo in a music store. But it's solid.
I was 17 when this come out,, and cannot stop feeling lots of nostalgia of what an amazing music scene i got the privilege to be part of it,,, this band today would be the best band of the decade,, back then it was amazing among another amazing bands !!
Perry is one of the few artists that can perform well on heroin. I still enjoy JA but I miss this kind of unhinged, reckless, spiritual shows like this.
+litch1374 band changes when "magic" is not there ... maybe they become a better musician or professional, but "magic" is a very important ingredient, and you can tell when it's gone. Likewise RHCP after californication ...
Even though they were falling apart as a band by this point, they were sounding incredible. Ritual de lo Habitual is one of the greatest records of all time.
Perry had these songs (3 days and Then she..) before Nothing Shocking was recorded. He Purposely held them back for the second studio album to lessen chance of a ‘sophomore slump’ chance. (Per Perry in RS interview)
Absolutely bone chillingly beautiful a song written about a friend who committed suicide - the mysterious Xiola Blue - and then a request at the end to say hello to his mother who also committed suicide... so I understand... ;)
One of my favorites from Jane's. I remember a late night in downtown Santa Barbara, California ~1997 at my friends house and in that in between that final wake and slipping into sleep state around 4am (it was late August, so it was hot and the windows were open) and a car outside at the stop light was playing 'Then She Did' and it was the mellow part when Perry sings 'pulled from a headless shell'. It was so surreal and a moment that has stuck with me all these years. My most favorite band of all time.
Avery is by far (Cliff Burton you know I kid) my fav bassist. and his style alone is light years ahead of his time. Perkins is probably the best, worst kept secret in all of rock n roll. without his foundation I couldn't imagine how different they would sound. Dave can slay and is probably one of the best guitarists ever if he was in some mainstream act... his style is so deep and he can change his tempo on a dime and it's these moments of melodramatic lows that conclude with Dave building the song into a whirlwind and then back down. so amazing. and Perry is just someone that can just stand there and it seems interesting. he could literally be a statue and ppl would still be interested in seeing what it's all about.
Perry’s instrument besides his voice is the effects that he and he alone controls throughout any Jane’s Addiction show. This performance is a great example of that. I forget where it happens in this video but he walks over to his effects knobs and drops the pitch of his voice and then brings it back up.
RITUAL was, and still is, one of the most influential albums of my life. It has always found it's way into conscious and subconscious life. When I first heard it, I remember thinking it was aggressive... violent...sexy...funny...freaky...poetic...all while, musically, being as original and exciting as anything had ever heard before and since. I was 20 when it came out. I still listen to it now and I STILL get the same feelings from it years later. It also happens to be my favorite album cover of ALL TIME. Jane's Addiction is MY Led Zeppelin.
That album has such a special place in my heart. The start of the 90s. I was 18. Just started experimenting with different substances. And listening to all the latest music. We would play the album then flip the tape over and replay it all night long. I went to some amazing places in my mind. I don't have the words to express how truly special it all was.
The beauty of the internet it is finding music you didn't get to see or know when you were dealing with drug addiction for like 30 yrs sht i just heard jane says blew me away 2022 amazed i frikken got to live through it all man/
Man Eric Avery’s base playing is so sweet. I’ve never heard anything like it. When Eric Avery went so did Jane’s Addiction. They kicked him out it was like slapping themselves in the face.
I love Ritual so much. Ever since it came out. I lived in LA, and it just represents the whole experience of the early 90s there. I've always thought of "Side 2" of this album to be very Zeppelinesque (sorry to use an esque).
I've always thought of both Ritual and Nothings Shocking as Zeppelinesque. I remember telling some coworkers that when I was turning them on to JA. They thought I was crazy. I always put it down to their not REALLY knowing Zeppelin. Sounds snobbish, I know. Whatever. Taste is so nebulous.
dLimboStick Thank you. I don't know chords or notes, I know the feel. And "Side 2" definitely feels like it could have been outtakes from Physical Graffiti. And that's a real compliment. How many bands can even be compared to Led Zeppelin? Yep, other than Justin Bieber, no one :)
I think that if you know both bands music, you must feel that Zeppelinesque sound on Jane's Addiction. Days ago I was turning my friends to JA we started with both albums you mention and they noticed that Led Zeppelin influence.
Allan Ostermann I feel Ritual is closer the Zep's Houses of the Holy album, but again, opinion on art is so subjective. That's the beauty of art. It touches everyone differently.
Remember the Los Angeles street scene with jane's addiction? The Roxy show when they recorded their first album? Club Scream? Fenders Ball room with Dramarama? The John Anson Ford shows? Those were great days when you could see great bands at different clubs throughout Hollywood. I saw Jane's Addiction at the Coach House in San Juan Capistrano on two Saturdays back to back. Club Scream shows and the 88 to 89 new year show were my favorites. They played a show at irvine meadows with Social Distortion and X.
I remember loving Nothing’s Shocking and then waiting for Ritual de lo Habitual to be released. I was 17. So much great music during those years. We were set.
Paige Cat Thank you for mentioning that. My mother also committed suicide; and it's so fucked up I don't think I'll ever truly fathom it. I'm an artist, and the pain brings forth a lot of great art; but also a lot of horrible angst.
Allan Ostermann I am so sorry your mother died that way and I believe anyone who commits suicide isn't in their right mind when doing it they are depressed or worse and it is hard to fathom and it hurts too. My cousin's husband killed himself 10 years ago his two oldest kids are in their early 20's now and his son is 15 and the youngest about 10 she was 18 months when he passed she has zero memory of him and it bothers her knowing that and the son doesn't remember much. One of the older daughters was nauseous and almost hyperventilating during his funeral. He killed him b/c of finances ridiculous really and selfish of him and his reasons. I don't think all people who commit suicide are selfish in doing it cause if they have a nervous breakdown etc. they are mentally broken and need to get well again and it sadness to see any of this happen to anyone. The family suffers the worst from the aftermath. I just hope that you heal from this in your heart and knowing your mother is in heaven, poor thing it breaks my heart knowing someone like her had to feel this was the only solution God bless her and you!
I love this the most about Perry and the way he allows his vocals to be an instrumental part of the musical composition which is so much like a surreal jazz piece. Jane’s Addiction was a musical experience I missed being a mother to a family in the 90s, but when I was able to continue in my life as my own person, I discovered them way too late! I may be fortunate to be able to get into their 90s vibe starting in my frickin’ 50s! I dream of Perry, literally like I knew him over 30 hrs ago and I was at the ocean with him and we were just hanging out and becoming friends. It freaks me out yet seems possible for some weird reason.
I actually think his voice was a little flat and pitchy this, show and most of the shows I've heard from this period, best he ever sounded was Hammerstein ballroom, on his day he had the best voice in rock for me, powerful, really cut through and already powerful sound from the other 3 ...
@@TheDreamer1980 I loved the Hammerstein ballroom version of Jane Says. I would have loved to be able to able to appreciate it back when it was actually happening and not afterwards. Very talented musicians with creative sounds and percussions. MTV Vijay’s pissed them off with their bogus interviews…lmfao! Perry hated that b.s. along with Shannon Hoon and other non pop artists back in those times!
@@smkxodnwbwkdns8369 yeah mate got to agree here - Perry has never been great at singing in tune. This performance has great energy but his pitching is all over the place
I dunno about that. The reason they had such problems as a band (apart from all the skag, of course) is coz Perry demanded 50% of the royalties and then a further quarter of the remaining 50. What a tool.
I love seeing what people think they were singing even if it's wrong. I used to think it was "we'd go laughing through the garage"... But it's "...laughing through the garbage"
This is the only way I can "be at this concert" since I was too young (14) back then and wasn't allowed to go, even though I badly wanted to. Now almost 30 years later, I'm finally here.
My favorite song of theirs. Just epic, haunting, momentous, synchronous, classical and utterly profound. It builds and culminates in the peak of the greatest B side in rock music. The favt that they were disintegrating as a band at be this time reveals the depth of their music rather than obscures it.
The best Janes song out there. This performance cannot be topped. Been listening to Janes for 20yrs. Perry"s voice isnt the same now but he is still the man. Along with Dave,Eric and Stephen of course there would be no Janes Addiction without them. Flea did a decent job subbing for Eric but the magic isnt there. The Hammerstein performance is great too.
Exactly. Only, without the pretentiousness that has overcome a certain other Art Rock quartet out of Los Angeles that came after Jane’s disbanded in ‘91.
The prior song to this on the album is Three Days where they have just let rip big time. This song is about restraint for the most part. I haven't listened to it in quite a while and I had forgotten just how powerful it is.
Anyone notice here how Perry perhaps doesn't feel as confident as he does in the modern-day. He doesn't move around as much. He seems more focused on what he's doing. What a character he is. There cannot be another like him. I love the man!
words cant begin to capture the sheer elegance & emotion this performance summons. edit = 3:02 definitely my favorite part. perry appears as though he's channeling the gods themselves! thank you, ever so much!!
Dave Navarro is way overlooked as a guitarist because of his looks and the image as the "pretty boy in the band" and his image. Actually Dave Navarro can literally play everything. From Van Halen to Grunge, Funk and everything in between. Literally he is as good as guitar player as Eddie Van Halen in terms of technique and speed. Way cleaner than Fruiscante. Creative too and highly in his own genre. He is not among Gods like Van Halen Kirk and Slash simply because JAne's Addiction was never that popular worldwide and in US. The first bass player is basically Jane's Addiction. Basically 90% of the songs are bass led songs and everyone else just pops on the bass vagon. The Strays is more Navarro Centric as everything after 2003. I personally think the band from 2003 is something different than the band from 1990s. To each his own- but that old sound lies in the bass player. The drummer is also world class. There is literally nothing I can say about that dude. He is top world class on the level with Chad Smith more or less. HAving "THE ROCK BAND" is a very very complicated thing. 4 people who do not obey authority and everyone with a strong personality clearly having no problems to put himself up there with a middle finger up to the audience. Now try 4 people like this to unite in a single system where everyone should be kept in line- not trying to dominate the others in any way. This is why bands fail. Its an ego trip and rarely what band survives it more than few years. This is why bands dont suceed. There have been thousands better bands than Jane's addiction with much better stuff that broke up before they could even record something . Rock and Roll is a very very hard industry to succeed in.
When I watched this video I felt I could see Perry pouring his soul into the lyrics--at certain points his expression is of someone very immersed in the music and full of deep emotion. Then I read it was about a former love of his who died of an overdose, and also about his mother's suicide. That explained a lot about the depth of this moving performance.
SO glad i bought this Bootleg CD from a South Street RecordShop in '91__ JANE's, Live in MILAN,__1990___ a prized possession, RU-vid can't TOUCH the Entire incendiary show.... their PRIME years, for real
WOW what a track. Im originally from England but moved to Los Angeles in the early 90s. I remember when listening to the radio back then thinking this band is the mUtts Nuts. Jayne says is probably one of my favourite alternative rock records ever . Way ahead of thier time. Brilliant. Paved the way for alot of bands.
I love the first ad at 3 minutes right at the first peak of the song-- gotta love it..☹️hv Adbloocker too.. happy to hear a live version with no rant..🤟🏼 1:18 is a Great Exchange 3:24 5:20 too,. It's hard not to follow/hum along with Avery's great bassline - foundation 4 this band 👍❤️💪👌✌🏻✌🏽😷🎶😁
I remember exactly where I was when I first heard Perry yell "Three, Four!!" I had to pull my '78 Ford truck off the road while my 3rd eye opened and twitched.
