Capt. Jack Sparrow (Johnny Depp) arrives at Port Royal in the Caribbean without a ship or crew. His timing is inopportune, however, because later that evening the town is besieged by a pirate ship. The pirates kidnap the governor's daughter, Elizabeth (Keira Knightley), who's in possession of a valuable coin that is linked to a curse that has transformed the pirates into the undead. A gallant blacksmith (Orlando Bloom) in love with Elizabeth allies with Sparrow in pursuit of the pirates.

This movie is so quotable, the score is absolutely ridiculous, the cinematography was way ahead of its time, the sound design is spot on, and the actors are obviously top-tier. This movie is 2000 gold mine goodness

Disney was unable to copyright any of the pirate flags because they are all ACTUAL pirate flags. Barbossa's flag is the flag of "Calico" Jack Rackham, while Jack Sparrow's flag is a slight variation of Henry Every's flag. Rackham would eventually be captured and hanged in Kingston, whereas Every is believed to be one of the few pirates to have retired with their acquired fortunes (although some say he was betrayed and his fortune was stolen from him, leaving him to die penniless).

Speaking of flags, I noticed that the British flag shown at the beginning of the movie isn't quite correct. It's not the same as the actual "Union Jack". So I looked it up, and sure enough, it IS correct, because that's what the flag looked like during the time period when this movie was set. The cross of St. Patrick for Ireland had not yet been added to the flag at this time. Nice attention to detail!

"To heat up the bed?" Yep. That device is literally called a "bed warmer." Odd that it's being used in the Caribbean...but it is correctly period. It's pretty much been replaced, first by hot water bottles, now by electric blankets.

My son said they should make a ride out of this at Disney. To which I responded.....they did, and the movie is based on it....and he has been on the ride more than once. Which proves to me: There is no reason to take a kid younger than 8y to Disney. They likely won't remember it. (We live 90min away and he saw ALL the parks several times from 5-7y)

Jack Sparrow is such a unique character, even for a pirate. He's not a bad guy. But he's not a good guy either. Johnny plays him so well. As of May 2024 Jerry Bruckheimer made it clear that he would love to have the actor return to the role, stating, “It's a reboot, but if it was up to me, he would be in it… I love him. He's a good friend. He's an amazing artist and he's a unique look - And if you ask any POTC Fan? There's only one Jack Sparrow... And that's Johnny Depp. He said he wouldn't, however work for Disney again, not even for $300 million and a million alpacas.

Sparrow can get away with not being bad as such because at least on screen he's not really a pirate. He's an adventurer with a skewed sense of morales, but you don't see him raiding merchant ships or ports.

in the time POTC was set the British Empire had a powerful presence in the caribbean, being a pirate was symbolic of different things depending on the perspective...some saw it as freedom, a way to live outside the laws and oppression. some pirates were not as nasty as they fronted, they had codes of honor among them. but there were some pirates that truly were bloodthirsty and nasty. the aztecs have always been linked to blood historically, it makes sense that the curse works the way it does.

I dont think people realize just how dark the line 'waste not' is . They werent planning on letting Elizabeth go after lifting the curse. One women on a ship with a bunch of men who are starved for the touch of a woman, what do you think is going to happen? Seriously how did disney get away with that implication in a family movie.

This is a bit of a reach. “Waste not” most likely only refers to Elizabeth’s blood being used for the curse. Hence why the small cut on her hand.

keira knightley played the decoy of Padme, the real Padme was played by natalie Portman. johnny depp chose not to go back to POTC because he was rejected earlier when he was still in his court case with his ex-wife and when disney begged for him to come back to POTC he basically just gave them the middle finger. there is a tattoo place in my hometown called Tortuga Tattoos XD

At 26:35 the real clever move of Jack Sparrow is this.. " He acted like he was preparing the ship, but that was a trick.. He didnt prepare the ship.. When the commodor reached them, Jack And Orlando Bloom switch the ships and they escape easily, because the commodor's ship was already ready to move, but the other ship didn be prepared to move.. So commodor lost so much times to prepare that ship and follow our guys.." That was the real clever move :D

Actually, pigs tend to be very hygienic creatures that dislike urinating and defecating near their sleeping nests. They also make nice comfortable nests, and they are very warm so it would probably be very comfortable. Provided the pig will suffer to be near you, that is. They sleep near their friends and family.

Just realized after you guys had been talking, Elizabeth should had been cursed as well. Consider how Jack got the curse to apply to him in the end fight, the moment that Elizabeth's blood fell on the coins, she should had been cursed too. Also the barrels of rum could had been used to construct a raft or a small boat. Natalie Portman had a rounder face while Kiera Knightley has a sharper face. There's rumors of a Pirates reboot or sequel and recast as Johnny Depp felt that Disney abandoned him with his legal issues and doesn't want to reprise his role as Jack Sparrows again. Who would you like to replace him as Jack Sparrows.

But Elizabeth herself never took a piece of gold from the chest, and that's how I always understood the curse to work. Will could break the curse because his father was one of the pirates who took a piece from the chest and he has the same DNA, so in movie magic it works to undo the curse. Jack gets cursed because he takes a coin from the chest. But Elizabeth comes by the coin 3rd hand, and has no blood ties to anyone involved, which is why her blood never worked and she was never cursed

Brig is a sailing ship with two square-shaped mast pylons. Galleon is a large wind-driven, three-masted, sailing warship developed by the British in the 16th century. Sloops were first developed in the Netherlands as small, single-masted ships that were easy and fast to maneuver. As a Result: " Sloops; Small size ships... Brigs: Middle size ships... "You cheated!" "Pirate." 🤣 One of my favorite movies. The whole original trilogy is great. The fourth movie, not so much, and I never saw the fifth one. I love the role of Governor Swan. It's obvious, and even more so in the sequels, that he just wants his daughter to be happy, even if that means she chooses a path he wouldn't have chosen for her.

Lots of scenes are based directly on the PotC ride. Like the prisoners in jail with the dog holding the key ring in his mouth. The guy sleeping with the pigs. The skeleton pouring rum into his mouth and it running down his ribcage. The cave full of treasure. etc.

Just to clarify about the treasure, that treasure was not part of where the chest was. This is treasure that they’ve been accumulating for years since they fell under the curse. They didn’t spend it because what are you going to spend it on? Money and women? You can’t feel anything.so they are accumulating all of this wealth so when they broke the curse, they were all rich men.

I love the original trilogy of movies but personally I got fatigued from the plot because it's the same across all the movies. In every single movie there's some form of undead pirates that they have to face.
