Hey Ben What's Up? Let me start by saying that I am one of the Biggest Janet Jackson Fans on the planet. I have seen her in person for her last 8 concerts. Yet I truly enjoyed your review of her Rhythm Nation Album. I love it but I hold no ill will to those who do not. That's what makes music so awesome. Everyone can listen and generate their own opinion. Janet Jackson has a particular style and groove that is not for everyone. That does not make you a black music hater just as your review does not diminish her undeniable influence on pop culture and modern day music artists. I only hope that you continue your musical introduction into Janet. You did enjoy her first album and I feel you may find some of her other albums more to your liking. But rather you continue or not, never let anyone stop you from being the honest, likeable, positive soul you are because those of us who support your channel truly love that about you. Rock On Brother!!!

Omg, this comment made my day! Thank you, not only for you incredibly kind words, but for being able to accept other people's opinions without it feeling like it's an attack on your own! So refreshing to read, truly! ❤️ The impact and awards this album received are incredible and I cannot deny that at all! I am keen to see what else she has, because she wouldn't be so iconic if she didn't have great stuff!

Comparisons are inevitable. She was very much like Michael in the 80s, with her dancing/choreography and singing/vocal inflections. She was, of course, inspired by Michael. But she eventually carved out her own space in the industry.

I generally hate comparisons between them, but in this instance, the main reason it sounds similar is because MJ spent the rest of his career emulating the sound of this record.

It is very interesting that a lot of people that are new to Janet's catalog but already know MJ (specially his work from HISTORY and forward) say that Rhythm Nations "sounds very MJ". But the fact is that Michael's music since Dangerous and History took a Janet sound. For History, for example, he used Janet's production team. He was a fan of RN and songs like The knowledge. Great review!
@bennshouts

That actually is super interesting, I suppose just shows how big MJ was in comparison? And overtone Janet in many ways

Sure. That, and I'll add that with the child molesting acusations he gravitated to her since she was in her peak . He used her production team and made her choose the video director for Scream (Mark Romanek). She got his back. That's what sbilings do@@bennshouts

And don't forgot the tour, because this was her first tour (She didn't tour during the ''Control'' era). She was a incredible dancer since she dance since she was young. 'Love Will Never Do'' video was shot after the ending of the tour (in november 1990) and she changed her look, you ear the wind turning after the end of her first tour who she adopted a new image more sexy and that was this image she adopted during the 90's and 2000's (since ''Love Will Never Do'' was the last single released of this album).

It's a shame that people today don't want to hear a song that's longer than 2:30 or 3:00 minutes. I guess back in 1989 i didn't notice-- i was too busy grooving to the music. This album is one of my Lifetime Favorites. I graduated high school in 1989, and this album meant (and means) a lot to my generation. It's my generation's version of "What's Going On". I know the production sounds dated now, but that's what happens with music eventually. I look at this album (all albums, really) as a Universe you enter and journey through to the other side. Anyway, best of luck to you. I only watched about 12 minutes of the video-- it was too heartbreaking to see your looks of disgust and disappointment.

She took a huge risk with this conceptual album back then, I think. And it really paid off. She was young and successful artist, but angry about the state of the world, and kinda wanted to rub these subject matters in your face. Sometimes you just need to do that to make yourself heard. This was a huge album back then, she proved to be more than just a one album wonder. Sad thing is that these themes are still relevant today, one might say even more than 30 years ago.

Rhythm Nation 1814 - masterpiece of an album and one of my favs of hers. It's a shame that you didn't enjoy it as much but we're all entitled to our own opinions. Definitely worth a second listen from begining to the end. The sound might not sit well with you but this was the start of New Jack swing era that later dominated the sound of the late 80s and into early 90s which even Michael adopted (hence the "Michael Sound"). Also "R" is the 18th letter of the alphabet and "N" is the 14th letter. 1814 was also the year the Star Spangled Banner was written. Also, not sure you noticed but bells you loved at the end were at the begining too - this was to help tie it back to it's main purpose. Hopefully you'll enjoy her next album "janet" which has a different sound to it.

Oh Benjamin haha. You made me laugh watching your reaction he he he. I think a lot of JJ fans are gonna come for you. Now I'm not a massive JJ fan, she was out at the same time as Madonna, Whitney, Cyndi Lauper, etc. I always thought she had a weak voice just as you said but the difference with JJ is that she is more of a visual artist. I think you'll probably end up backtracking on your words/thoughts when you watch the music videos that go with these. They are nothing short of ICONIC and that is coming from a MASSIVE Madonna fan! This album had 7 singles released from it and they all went Top 5 - a record still to this day. While TikTok dances are all the rage now, I remember back in the day when these were released I taught myself all of the dances to Rhythm Nation, Miss You Much, Escapade and It's Alright. She swept the Billboard Awards for this album - she won 8 for it. I think when people think of JJ, they associate her with the Rhythm Nation era because of the strength of the visuals for this album.

Oh benny...you’re a brave man for posting this! 🤣🤣🤣 Hats off to you!!! Lol. I loved Design of a Decade in high school - her Greatest Hits which includes radio edits of the 7 singles. So I have a soft spot for most of the songs on this album. Not just for the nostalgia, but because those industrial beats sound tough on a good system (to me, lol), especially Love will never do without you. And Lonely was a song I would listen to on repeat catching the bus to school in year 12. So many sweet memories. But that aside, oh lord, this reaction had me ROLLING!!! 🤣🤣🤣 I knew from the thumbnail it was gonna be a good one 👍 lmao. Please don’t let these queens get you down. As far as Janet goes, yes she can be a bit self-indulgent, with the pointless interludes, and over-long intros and outros, but the good moments are just magical, so IMHO definitely worth persisting with her discography. And sonically, it’s an outlier, so no need to fear any industrial beats in future albums (aside from a few self-referential moments in 20yo). Would be a shame for you to miss out on the next four records, especially Velvet Rope. PS Do you take requests from non-patrons? If so, where can i make one? Here?

If you didn't like interludes, she always included interludes because theses albums was conceived to playing without pause. You didn,t support this aggressive, don't forgot that ''Nasty'' (from the ''Control'' album) have the same aggressive sound then this album. Also, i didn't understand the hate of ''Escapade'' since it's was more light then the others songs of this album and was very light musically. Also the video was pure joy and hapinness. Also, don't forgot that Jimmy Jam and Terry Lewis (who produced totally all her albums between 1986 and 2001) was the musicians of Prince'' before the two left and started a career has a producer and Prince was also know to have a aggressive sound in his work at the base. This touch was a lot present with ''Control'' who have funk and industrial, the song ''Nasty'' was very aggressive sonically and was the lead in to this album. I love this industrial sound she made of this album, about talk a lot of socials issues, like the homeless (State of the World), racism (''The Knowledge''), the biracial (Love Will Never Do (Without you)) and also drug and violence (Black Cat). Also the song ''Livin in the World'' was wrote in memory of the victims of the mass shooting in the school of California in january 1989. The news at the end of the song was the new she heard in TV when she listen the news about the massacre in the school and she including that in the song. This was the inspiration behind a lot of songs of this album. Few tracks in the end of the album was about love. Also don't forgot the videos because her videos was influencals. For example, the video of the title-track was massive and was influencal for a lot of artists, notably her brother or others act like ''Beyoncé'' or ''Shakira''. It's was part for her 30 minutes documentary she turning for MTV for the released of this album who she including the two first singles naturally (Miss you Much and the title track) who it's was used for official videos and it's was the concept of the project. Also, the singles was ''Miss You Much'', ''Rhythm Nation'', ''Escapade'', ''Alright'' (who ''Alright'' was remixed for the released in single), ''Come Back to Me'', ''Black Cat'' and ''Love Will Never Do'', who all reaching the top 5 between 1989 and 1991 (four of them reaching n.1). Also, it's was one of the nine albums of history to produced four n.1 singles in a same album and the third female to achieved tht (the two first by a female was ''Whitney'' by Whitney Houston and ''Forever your Girl'' by Paula Abdul). And this album was also including of in a lot of musical book has one of the best albums of all-time.

I'm not surprised you didn't enjoy this album as much because of the new jack swing/industrial sound intentionally used to contrast her softer tone but I hope you continue your journey with Janet's discography and ignore the negative comments. I will say, that Janet as an artist does sex-positive and sultry like no one else and her work after Rhythm Nation explores that in depth. Also get used to interludes, and long songs and try to notice the interesting thing she does with layering her vocals, the harmonies and infectious melodies. I feel like The Velvet Rope will be the album you enjoy most because it's the first time she's extremely personal with what is happening in her life.

Her best album. Peak Janet for me. This had a huge impact. Was soooo fresh! And didn't sound like anything else at the time. The industrial-dance sound was C-O-O-L. This album and its videos and legacy are ICONIC. In 1989 pop wasn't generally political so this was a hugely defining artistic statement in a similar way that Madonna's Like a Prayer album was a hugely defining personal statement the same year. Both these albums had cultural and music industry impact that changed pop for other artists after this. Finally, after this album Janet went all soft a la Madonna's Bedtime Stories. And I lost interest in Janet immediately (Bedtime Stories is also one of my least favourite M albums,)

Awesome and honest reaction, Rhythm Nation is an awesome album for its time. I'm one of the hugest Janet fans too; her style is very eclectic. BUT I agree somewhat with the review of the album. The production is too long. The radio versions of her hits are WAY more palatable. What ur missing are the videos associated with her music. They take her songs to THE - NEXT - LEVEL. And then you begin to fully understand why she is who she is. Janet and The Velvet Rope are her best albums IMO. Especially the Velvet Rope - deep, moody, insightful and innovative. Sonically orgasmic and each song sounds different but works together nicely. I just may have to request a listen of it from you lol. Would luv to see ur review of it.

People automatically take it personal on an opinion, especially bringing generational cohorts into it etc. It's not upsetting, more frustrating that people hold me to some standard that I must like and accept everything, I give an honest reaction and an opinion at the time, which can also change with time and relistens, you can't just only want to hear positive things about something, it doesn't allow you to view anything from a different perspective. It was the #1 album of 1990 and it spawned 8 top-5 singles: Rhythm Nation, Miss You Much, Escapade, Alright, Come Back to Me, Love Will Never Do, Black Cat and State of the World, across three calendar years, which has never been done before. Black Cat won a Grammy for best Female Rock Vocal. The Long-form music video for the album won a Grammy. The album was inducted into the Library of Congress in 2020. The exercise isn't "let's see if it's good!" it's "let's see why it's good!," and a lot of people don't really realise that when they are listening to Janet Jackson for some reason. Nonetheless, you might like janet. and The Velvet Rope more -- her albums don't really sound similar to one another and these two are far less industrial. TVR in particularly also touches on some pretty heavy material so I actually recommend that one over janet. since it seems like you kind of want to feel something. All of her albums are long and they all have interludes, but TVR had the most valuable contract ever and JJ was the second most succesful female artist of the '90s after Mariah Carey, so again -- the exercise is "how is it good?"

It was just a bunch of hard industrial-sounding noise to me - which is wild now in hindsight because that album is amazing. I generally feel Rhythm Nation 1814 was the same for me - but it's definitely helped by the videos and imagery that went along with it. A Dance song comes on: "ugh too noisy... give me a ballad" .. A ballad comes on: "ugh too slow get it over with already" It's cool that this album didn't Vibe with you. It's a stretch to call Rhythm Nation and acquired taste with all of the number ones and records that it set and smashed at the time. It is no understatement to say that this album is a blueprint for many of the albums and artists that you probably really do enjoy. Rhythm Nation was a first in many regards, it's not insignificant to mention the time that this album was created, remember in the '80s regardless of the genre of music, black artists were only in one category called Black music. It wasn't until later that major Awards actually allowed black pop artists to compete and be nominated alongside their white counterparts, albums like Rhythm Nation helped shatter this practice mixing genres together in a way that hadn't really been done on a mainstream record setting album before. It's no secret that the 90s were an era of musical fusion, Janet Jackson's Rhythm Nation help set that tone, everything from R&B to Hip Hop and new Jack Swing were included in this album. Janet was one of the main artists including interludes as a central Focus to help spread the message of the album. If you've heard interludes on R&B albums before it is 100% because they were inspired by this album. Critiquing a Michael Jackson album without understanding his influence on Dance and his visual trailblazing impact would be would set you at a disadvantage, the songs on Rhythm Nation were certainly created to coincide with music videos which was also different than other artists prior to Michael and Janet artists would create music that stood alone. Having a narrative album with a concept and a complete set of music videos that were record-setting in and of themselves was a signature of Janet Jackson and Michael Jackson. Especially in an era when black music videos were not in heavy rotation until Janet and Michael stepped in. Again keep in mind if you've seen it before it's only because this icon helped set that trend. To that point if you're not watching any of the music videos for the songs on this album, I'd say you are missing. I think it's fair for the music to speak for itself but being as though you seem extremely sensitive to anything repeating or any volume or any loud sound or any length of time in music, that's sitting in extremely high bar. That is literally just sounds which music is just organized sounds. I digress, perhaps your experience would be a lot smoother if you educate yourself a bit about what was going on what the artist was up against and what else was happening in the world when the music was created especially if that person is a picture for sample part of a marginalized group like a black woman for instance.... I appreciate you listening and I appreciate you giving folks the opportunity to have a comment section and tell their opinions. It sucks that you didn't get out of this album and project what so many others did. But to each their own, hopefully you enjoy whatever next album you listen to

My comment is obviously pretty late but this popped up on my for you, so i wanted to take the time to comment as well since i feel strongly about the album and Janet. I think a large part that no one has mentioned is timing, and the artist and their demographic. The songs are long because people were in the clubs, having parties etc and dancing. Dance was still really big so the records needed to be able to be mixed by DJs and played so ppl can dance to it. The sound your hearing is by producers Jimmy Jam and Terry Lewis that sound is called new jack swing/the Minneapolis sound. The sound was created by Prince, those guys used to work with him until they were fired. It was heavily popular at the time but specifically in America. Black artist did a lot of new jack swing, it was basically “trendy”. Lastly, i think when doing reactions demographic is most important, Janet is a black woman from America. The album is heavily political because it was important for her at the time as a young artist and especially black one to do a “call to action”. A lot of our music has that, because to be frank racism is a big deal in American and especially if you’re black. We care alot about it and this is not to be disrespectful at all but if you don’t feel passionate to the cause you won’t get it. We like the louder dance music, we like a good call to action, we like r&b and ballads. So of course I’m not blaming you for your opinion, but i will say i notice this opinion from those who won’t quite get it. You said it doesn’t have substance, but to me and alot of us it does, you just don’t understand and that’s totally okay. Regardless i liked the review because i enjoy a different perspective, Janet is the foundation for a lot of pop girlies who came after her. So maybe this wasn’t your vibe but remember artist make music in era’s and what they are going through in life, not everything will touch everybody and that’s totally okay. ❤️

I'm trying to figure out how everyone is saying this a good review. It's very negative if you ask me. And how old are you? I never heard anyone complain about songs being too long. Janet usually had an album version and radio/video edit version. Folks made ALBUMS back in the day,. Artist would make an album and then disappear for 3 years and come back. Especially Janet and Mike. Today artists never go away and mostly drop SINGLES for tiktok. Short attention span I guess.

The Knowledge is my favorite non-single track on the album. Tier I albums are: Rhythm Nation (80s), The Velvet Rope (90s), & All For You (00s). Tier II albums are: Control (80s), janet (90s), and Discipline (00s). Those six #1 albums form the bulk of Janet's legacy. Lol, I think The Velvet Rope and All For You will be more your speed. You hated all of the #1 hits except Black Cat. The Jimmy Jam & Terry Lewis sound in the 80s was a revelation. Highly influential. They soften up their sound a lot in the 90s and create influential R&B albums with Janet. You can skip the interludes moving forward, but All For You has the best ones.

The NJS sound isn't my favourite either. But you're never going to enjoy the experience if you've been forced to listen to an album because you've been paid to do so & want to get through it as quickly as possible. Janet's albums are an experience and are not necessarily meant to be consumed in one short sitting but savoured (the visuals and interludes are part of that experience). TVR, in particular, is a phenomenal album but the thought of someone trying to get through it as quickly as possible does make me cringe. I'm not convinced you would "get it". Also, I'm not sure what you mean by "its been done better". The point is to unite people through dance (hence the longer songs). It wasn't supposed to revolutionary or complex, otherwise it would come across a bit pretentious (that's more Madonna's style, we all know how artistic and avant garde she is - or tries to be). It was supposed to be accessible for kids. "Get the point? Good..."

It's depends, ''The velvet Rope'' took many listen to liking, while i love the ''Rhythm Nation 1814'' album at the first listen. It's my favorite album of her. But the two albums was not the same function, since ''The Velvet Rope'' was supposed to deal with the traumatic things that Janet faced since very young (with a violent father) with also theme very hard like AIDS, homophobia, discrimination and also talk also about her major depression and her self-estim in songs like the title track or ''I Get Lonely''.

The album then received some attention but I never bought the album or wanted to. Some of the singles came more alive with the videos and were kind of iconic for the era. Janet is always so hit or miss for me, personally. I find a lot of her albums just too long. "Rhythm Nation 1814" is such a product of its times, despite the relevancy of the lyrical content, but unfortunately, it does sound quite dated now. I think it's one of those albums that you need to hear at the right time to vibe with it, if you know what I mean? When I first heard it, I liked a couple songs, but overall didn't care nuch either way. Then one day years later, I randomly decided to listen to it one night, and I thoroughly enjoyed the album. As you've gotten some upset comments, I would like to remind you again that I personally still enjoy your reactions when they are like this. I don't see why anyone would think you're not open minded about music, though, because I see you trying so hard to find anything you like about the music and looking for positives even when you're clearly not vibing it. You even said you'd give it a second chance. And just a little bit of trivia: it's called "Rhythm Nation 1814" because 1814 is the year that "Star Spangled Banner" was written, and Janet haf intended the album and its political message to be a "new anthem for a new generation". Coincidentally, R and N are also the 18th and 14th letters of the alphabet.

This comment made my day, THANK YOU!!!! I knew it would annoy some people and wasn't going to upload for that fact, but then, is just an opinion, I'm sure Janet does NOT care what I think haha! Honestly, made my day reading this, thank you ❤️

I’m just so thankful Madonna doesn’t litter her albums with pointless interludes. And prepare yourself - aaall of Janet’s albums from this point forward follow the exact same formula. The songs do get better, tho. janet. and The Velvet Rope are masterpieces and each have a wider variety of sounds. Janet’s first two albums just sound the same. It’s like one long, run on song. Ha. I don’t know how her fans are satisfied with her. And I haven’t even mentioned her tours. It’s the same choreography and the same medleys year after year. BO-RING.

Also, I’m obsessed with the depleted facial expression you make when a song becomes repetitive and goes on for too long. Haha. You crack me up.

trying to drag janet when she is still doing full 8 counts and can still hold a note unlike madonna who hasn't made a good album since confessions....like let's be fr. i'd rather have 10 sec interludes than madonnas albums which are cluttered with filler tracks and skippable songs.

Omg, I couldn’t stop laughing at your annoyance with this album and agree completely, it was all over production and little talent. I will say, only the visuals for a couple videos save it. One video “Love will never do without you” was done in black & while, directed by the late great, Herb Ritts, who’s not only a famous & brilliant photographer, but his real muse was Madonna and directed her B&W video “Cherish”. I will say Escaped is my favorite song and video on this album.

Little talent? Can you harmonise in 11th? Can you make your voice blend in with the song? Can you even write a good song? I think not! ☝🏽 Again, don't come for Queen Janet

I used to like this album but re-listening it’s awful lol. It’s hard to listen when I’m so obsessed with Kylie 😂

Time and place but it doesn't hold up well. She's no Madonna.

Doesn't hold up well? Janet's music is still very much in good condition, numbers don't lie and STOP comparing her to Madonna, these 2 are not even remotely similar, it's like comparing ice cream to soup

....mind u all of madonnas music takes from black culture in particular new jack swing which janet helped popularize...
