Her brilliance is somehow still underrated to me. Always loved how she carved her own path in music to be unique and different and not just “Michael’s little sister”.. IMO Janet is a legend in her own right. A humble person and beautiful inside and out.. loved the “Janet” era.
Im a Janet fan, but I also call it how I see it...PARTS of it were in fact live. Such as her adlibs. But the high majority is pre recorded. But its okay. You win some you lose some. When you dance as part of your performance you can't give your focus to both. Im a lifelong fan and know the difference.
I wonder what made her change the direction of her music/image from ‘Control’ and ‘Rhythm Nation’ to ‘Janet’ and from that point on, I guess it was to show people she was a woman now🤷♀️
It's a slight breath she takes when she's about to take the mic away from her mouth but you can see the split second you hear the short breath, the mic is still near her mouth for you to hear her breathing before taking it away. This was live, it's a more mellow song so she sung live while maintaining the choreography which was very chill and relaxed. This performance of That's the way love goes and Someone to call my lover on Top of the pops in 2001 are examples of Janet's live vocals on Top of the pops. Janet lip syncs at times but don't be mistaken, she can sing live and dance at the same time and her breath control is pretty amazing. Pay attention if the vocals are absolutely perfect and Janet takes no breaths at all, that means it's pre recorded. Janet is a perfectionist and if she is pre recording vocals she makes sure there's no extra breaths, that's a red flag that if you hear her taking breaths in between singing, it's live.
Looked like the breath happened while the mic was still next to her mouth to me. Don’t forget the tiny audio delay on video, exacerbated by uploading this 30yo video to the internet
