It’s because she was her own iconic. He was crazy talented and a brilliant singer. She was, I think trying to prove herself and set her own tone, which makes every performance dynamic. What’s interesting is they both hate prejudice, bigotry, racism, abuse in the home, and wanted to protect youth (not touching the topic of MJ’s scandals).

My FAVORITE video from childhood!! I will NEVER FORGET how mesmerized I was the first time I saw this. Janet truly ushered in the belly bearing era of music which practically EVERY young female artist followed suit in doing the rest of the 90s and well into the 2000s. Janet Jackson is THE standard, and it is emphasized by this generation's new artists. Look at Tyla's "Truth or dare" music video and tell me the similarities you find. Janet is the blueprint, and it's quite remarkable how little it is talked about.

So glad this is now in HD! Ever since the Deluxe Edition of the "janet." album came out last month, I've been bingeing on this era lately. I love the aesthetic and color grading of all of her music videos during this era, the warm brown/sepia tones.
