Lauryn- I’m just a baby podcaster, I’ve only been at this for 6 months. But I’m an avid watcher/listener of all TSC episodes & have been for some time now. I listen for the entertainment, obviously, but also because I learn so much watching you guys host. It's a shame most will remember Janice for ANTM, I feel like that show diluted her prominence. To see what she accomplished in the 70s is astronomical.

I love Janice, but Gia Carangi was considered the first real supermodel. Unfortunately Gia was troubled and with drugs and contracting Aids ended her life early tragically, who knows where she would have been now.

Agreed I recall Gia having that title. Janice was everywhere, just like Lauren Hutton, who’s another modeling icon. She’s gotta be 80.

Janice isn’t saying she was the most successful or sought after model, she is saying she coined the term “supermodel” which changed the industry to separate models from supermodels. Of course there were more successful models during and before her, they just didn’t have the terminology yet. So, she technically was the first “supermodel” because she created the term.

Gia was not. The New York Times first used the term to describe a model for Twiggy in the 1960s. Twiggy was a cultural phenomenon then.

Listen. Janice was big, but she was absolutely NOT the first "Supermodel". Verushka? Suzy Parker?! Twiggy!? Stop. it. Read Michael Gross's Model. It's a great book (that needs a new edition). Also, Iman is from Somalia. Buuuuutttt....I did like that she mention Bitten Knudsen (RIP)! She was just as wild as Janice.
