This is a sweet, “folksy” story, tenderly portrayed by Janis Joplin. While I only realized it after the recording was completed, it reminds me a bit of Simon and Garfunkel’s ‘The Boxer’, and is a lovely contrast to Janis’s ‘Summertime’ and ‘Kosmic Blues’.
Here’s the link to the original song by Janis Joplin:

Kristofferson is an amazing guy. He was a Rhodes scholar with a masters from Oxford in english literature. He was also a Golden Gloves boxer and was on the fast tract in the military as a helicopter pilot. He turned down a job as a professor at West Point, as he felt a calling to music and abandoned his life to move to Nashville. He took a janitor's job at Columbia and got his first real break when Johnny Cash read a letter Kristofferson's mother had written to him disowning him. Cash took Kris under his wing, and it all started from there. He is a poet as a lyricist and just a fascinating individual.

His lyrics and her vocals here paint such a vivid picture of being inside that truck with the driver and the two of them. I think we've all met someone that we gladly reveal everything about ourselves that you never would with anyone else. It sounds like what this fictional couple had going on.

I didn't know any of that about Kristofferson. What a fascinating guy! He could do so many things! He couldn't sing worth a lick though. I've heard his version of this, but he certainly wrote a great song, and Janice made it a classic! "Freedom's just another word for nothing left to lose." is a fantastic line! In fairness to Kristofferson's singing, I'm really not familiar with anything else he sang, and probably his version of this song sounds worse because Janice sounds so great!

@@MikeytheGeek7711 He has one of those "situational" voices...very much like a Tom Waits, or a Warren Zevon, some songs are way more impactful in his pedestrian tone. "Why Me Lord" has been covered a million times, but I still prefer him singing his own song in his own voice...you're not wrong, though...he will never be known for his vocals. Although, I will say, it may not be pretty, but it's always in tune.🙂

Pearl is an incredible album. Full Tilt Boogie were masterful musicians capable of moving easily between rock, blues, soul, funk and country styles, perfectly complimenting Janis' vocal performances. I can only imagine the song Buried Alive In The Blues with her singing, unfortunately she died before recording the vocal for it.
@rickwalker6400
@rickwalker6400 2 месяца назад
Many people, including members of her former band Big brother thought her voice was totally blown out on this album. In truth if you listen to her live in 1970 her voice was clear and powerful. The producer of Pearl convinced her to try a different technique which allowed her to sing with power but not constant full throttle. He called it her "church voice" ... I don't know about that but her voice was in fine, subtle flavor on this song and really the entire pearl album

4:30 & 14:30 "One day up near Salinas, Lord, I let him slip away He's lookin' for that home, and I hope he finds it" So ironic that instead of Janis letting Bobby slip away, it is all of us who let Janis slip away in 1970. I hope Janis found the home she was looking for.

Janis will forever remind me of my mom. Once a week her and her best friend would have cocktails, talk and listen to records. This was the early 70's and I was 5-6 years old. The raw power of her voice, and her freedom of movement, and her willingness "to go there" and use it (free spirit), to me makes her unique, for her time. She talkes this beloved song, and makes it her own, a completely diff. arrangement and tone from the original. She is a Legend, a goddess in her hometown has her own museum in Beaumont Texas. From what I gather untrained, she was born with it.

Thanks for telling us that Roger Miller was the first to record this song. The earliest recording I knew of was Kris Kris-TOF-fer-son's own version, but there were several before his. That prompted me to go back and listen to Roger Miller's version. It's an old-fashioned style of Nashville country music but with some brass instruments added at the second verse and some ad libs in the coda that I don't generally associate with country. It's worth a listen and possibly a "first listen and reaction" video. The very simple chord progressions and the key change after the first verse would provide an opportunity for some elementary discussion of functional harmony and the one-step-up key change frequently used in popular music.

Just couldn't resist adding more about the relationship between Janis and the Dead. Pigpen, the original keyboard player and frontman for the Dead,was a close friend of janis', and a blues singer. The Dead lived together in the Haight Ashbury, and Janis would come over and party at their house. After she passed,the band added this song to their repertoire and wrote Bird Song about the their lost friend. I would love it if you would listen to their moving tribute to this beautiful soul.

I think it would be worthwhile for you to read the book "Buried Alive: The Biography of Janis Joplin" by Myra Friedman, Janis' publicist near the end of Janis' life. Janis was a tortured soul in many ways, and her demise was inevitable according to Friedman. Janis was singing with about 1/4 of her voice left by the time she became famous; The biography goes into detail on that, and many other aspects of her life. All of that glorious emotion you hear in Janis' work comes from her very captivating history... Not for the faint of heart...

Amy, you are only experiencing a part of the impact of Janis without seeing any live performances. You will see her vulnerability as well as her total command of the stage and her force reaching everyone in the audience. If you don't do a video of her at Monterey Pop singing Ball and Chain, at least watch it for your own benefit. Just so you can see for yourself that people's descriptions of her are not hyperbole. You will see evidence of that, not coming from yourself, but coming from a very important member of the audience. You will wonder why the camera does focus on one specific audience member for as long as it does. It's because that audience member is Cass Elliot. Who was in The Mama's and the Papa's. The band responsible for the whole festival. When you watch Cass watching Janis your musician comradery with her will come out. You will know Cass is watching and reacting to her as a musician as well as a fan. You will know when you see it. Also after you do see Janis live compare and contrast it with other female singers at the time in Janis's sphere. There is a stark contrast. As for this song Janis finally got with musicians that were on her level and knew what they were doing. As well as a producer that knew how to make Janis shine in her best light.

What has me wondering, and I am no music industry professional, is when creating this song, and recording and mixing it in the studio, at what point did some of the people who were present started to hear and recognize the gem that they were working on and had in their hands. "nothing ain't worth nothing but it's free" in the chorus, which she almost misses completely) but she definitely wraps her own style all round it.

I love your your commentary. You would make a perfect music teacher for middle school or high school. Your passion pours through the words you choose to express yourself. I grew up listening to Janis Joplin . I was so sad when passed. Her songs always take your on an emotional journey that not everyone could appreciate. Thank for you for taking the to listen to her words and let them take you to a place where life was hard and gritty yet magical because she would have given anything for one more with who made her a cherished memory.

Such a beautiful song, kinda happy and sad at the same time. I enjoyed your reaction and the way you enjoyed it too. 🖤

It is just such a pleasure to experience your enjoyment when you stumble across something that moves you, catches you and connects to you in the realm of the intangibles, and in spaces apart from the nuts and bolts of a piece. I appreciate your amazing ability to draw out and translate into words hidden aspects of music very much, but it is also lovely to see you just enjoying the experience.

Can you hear her tone of voice when she sings "and I hope he finds it", it is clear she is lying and hoping he's coming back to her. Brilliant detail! This song brings me back in a period when I was young and free from responsibilities.

I'd trade all my tomorrows for one single yesterday, one of the great lines. Willie Nelson called this the perfect country music tune, consisting of everything a country tune is supposed to draw from. Said he was disappointed he didnt write it. Janis Joplin had a big influence on Stevie Nicks, list to Rhiannon on Midnight Special , you can hear Janis

Such a good song, I heard the Grateful Dead version first and, being a guy's point of view I still prefer it. I doubt she would have minded as she was such a friend of the band and I certainly give her version props. Such a sad life, that ended too soon.

At the beginning after Janis sings as faded as my jeans you can hear a little bit of country guitar that comes in. This song was very much of its time because young hippies were leaving home, hitching across the country so they got rides from truckers and strangers who ever will give them a lift.

Yes indeed, we hippies hitched all over the place. Very common in the 70's.

There's a YT vid, music only, of her singing this with just her guitar. Some photos of her as a young musician that are wonderful. What she says at the end, you will love. Also an interview at Musicians Hall of Fame with Kristofferson and the owner of the studio when he wrote the song. The origin of Bobby McGee is revealed and where he started writing the song as well. I didn't know he spent a month in SF visiting Janis. His feelings about her...

If you wish to watch Janis learning, Me and Bobby McGee . Watch Festival Express - a documentary about a traveling festival across Canada in 1970. So many great bands

Yes, Festival Express is a great documentary. I enjoyed the scenes on the train where musicians jammed with one another. Janis and the Grateful Dead were the central figures of the spirit of the trip across Canada. 🎸😎

This is an incredibly moving song, a song of lost love, a song of loss, sung quite extraordinarily. Thank you for your analysis and comments.

Do yourself a favor and watch her sing " Ball and Chain " at Monterey Pop 1967. I know you prefer studio recordings, but, almost all San Francisco bands were live bands! You have to see Janis just spill her soul on stage! Just incredible!

My mother had the album this song is from, "Pearl" so I grew up with it. This song always grabbed my attention from the first line "Busted flat in Baton Rouge...". Probably because I was born and raised in Baton Rouge. I now wish I had grabbed that record when I had the chance when I moved out on my own in the late 80s. It was an unfortunate loss in the Baton Rouge 2016 flood that hit my mother's house with 4 feet of water.

The term “ busted flat” is speaking of being without money. They were “broke “ and needed a ride. Love your reaction .❤

Robert Plant of Led Zeppelin was a huge Janis fan, and on some Zep tracks he does his best Janis impression, like Gallows Pole.

Vitesse my favorite Kriss Kristofferson's song that Janis Joplin turns from a folk and country road ballad into a steamroller of a soul journey. Plus the lyrics have some of my favourite lines in country, rock, and English poetry (windshield wipers slapping time, freedom's just another word for nothing left to lose, the whole quatrain of: I let her slip away looking for the home (...) Bobby's body next to mine, feeling near as faded as my jeans).

To truly appreciate what Janis does with this song you really have to first listen to the original performed by Kris, himself. Total night and day. Both are great, each in their own way.

Just a kid when these more "thought provoking" song inspired me to paint a picture in my mind, songs like Owd to Billy Joe, God didn't make little green apples and of course this song Me and Bobby mcGee! Even in my ten-year-old mind I could wonder, painting a clear picture in my minds imagination. Very exciting creative time in music.

VR - I APPRECIATE the fact that you DID NOT STOP and comment during this song. THAT was the reason I UNSUBSCRIBED months ago. Show respect for the performance - more importantly experience the transitions without breaking them up! All of us who grew up with this song (I am a 71 yr old male in Northern California) are extremely frustrated when OUR songs are interrupted!! Thank you!! This is probably my most favorite song of all time.

That's hilarious. It's her show. She's not showing disrespect she's being a teacher and she's very good at it. If you wanted to listen to the whole song all the way through you can. She's here to teach and give her impression of the music. You want her to change her show because of your misunderstanding. Rather pompous
