disagree completely, this loses the emphasis of the song on the title line dispite having a nice late sixties hippy groove. Shirley sings the song as intended without over indulging for the sake of effect, making the Shirelles version work better except for the crap organ solo.
@@keithwarrington2430 "For the sake of effect" completely diminishes the power and bluesy tone that Gayle McCormick sang with. Smith was a rock group that adapted this song to their way of performing. The Shirelles were a pop group who sang the song in that late 50s/very early 60s style that so many girl groups had. I like each version for different reasons. Denigrating the talents of one singer does not elevate the talents of another.
I do love the original version by The Shirelles. Before I even heard that version, being a Beatles fan from the '60s, I heard it by The Fab Four first and I liked that version as well. In spite of having a sore throat, John Lennon does a pretty good vocal delivery. But this version is a powerhouse! One thing that all great bands do is make a song their own, and they certainly did that here. Heart should have covered this version, I can hear Ann Wilson belting this out!
Thank you for your reaction video to this. My dad was the drummer in this group. I loved watching him play and I agree Gayle's vocals are great !!!! this rocks!!! I love my Dad. My dad passed away on 4-15-2023 but his drumming lives on!!!! It makes me happy to see that others still love my dad's music decades later!!! Thanks again for featuring this song on your youtube channel and liking it :) Oh yeah, to be fair, my dad's group covered this song and made it a rock song,. the original is not a rock song. I love all versions of this song, but none is like my dad's version, the rock version of Baby It's You By A Group Called Smith
Your daddy was an amazing musician! God bless him and May he Rest in Peace and Glory! I was blown away by the drums in this song when it came out in my senior year of high school! Gayle’s vocals and your dad’s drums made this song epic!🙏🏻❤️🎶🎼🎵🎤🥁
This song was written by Burt Bacharach, Luther Dixon, and Mack David. The first recording, I heard of it was by The Shirelles. But the Beatles have an amazing version of it with Lennon taking the lead vocals. 🕊❤️🎼
As you viewers will tell you, this Burt Bachrach-written song was one of the Shirelles great hits in 1961 and then was covered by the Beatles in 1963 and was on their album Introducing the Beatles released in the U.S. in early '64 when Beatlemania "exploded". The Shirelles' version was so perfect that the Beatles did it exactly the same, note for note. You've heard the Shirelles once but you should hear more of their great classic hits.
You guys continue to amaze me with finding my favorite music that I grew up with. The 5 year window you reference was in my youth and the music was simply amazing, as you are finding out
I knew it! Had to go thru my records, but I DID have it on vinyl! I have this song on a record called 'The Greatest Hits of Right Now!. (so you can guess about when it came out....about 1970 ish).
I know, eventually, y'all come to my favs...and this is one of my all time. Such a great bump n grind groove...and the vocals. Remake of a one of those weepy girl songs of the early sixties but turn around with a lot of soul mixed in. Back in the day, id ask my mom to turn it up while riding in her Oldsmobile
Wow, I was so addicted to this song when I first heard it. This one got past me for decades. I didn't discover it until 2002. It became my all-time favorite song, until Evanescence finally took over in 2006 with "My Immortal.". That was my #1 for several years. I take this stuff seriously. 😁
Back then when this song was on the air, the band's name was "A Group Called Smith." There English rock band who's name is "The Smiths." On the soundtrack album for the movie "Easy Rider", she sang "The Weight."
WOW so miss Gayle McCormick. What a wonderful voice. Gone to soon. Gayle had a solo tune "It's a Cryin' Shame" that received some national airplay. Her cover of the Leon Russel / Delaney & Bonnie Bramlett song "Superstar" is quite good.
I knew you would eventually get around to Gayle and this song. I recommended it to you a couple years ago. Gayle could sure belt it out. Glad you liked it.
RIP Gayle McCormick (1948-2016) The former lead singer for the rock band Smith, who's biggest hit in 1969 was a cover of Burt Bacharach's "Baby It's You", which hit #5. Smith had 2 more entries on Billboard's Hot 100 chart in 1970; "Take A Look Around" (#43) and "What Am I Gonna Do" (#73). And even bubbled under at #101 with "Comin' Back To Me (Ooh Baby). Smith broke up in 1971 and McCormick went on to a solo career. Her first solo song "Gonna Be Alright Now" went to # 84 (Hot 100) & at # 20 (Adult Contemporary) in August of 1971. Her first Hot 100 entry, "It's A Cryin' Shame", missed the Top 40 in 1971, peaking at #44 (Here's a video of it: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-TRkvhoduIxI.html) Her next entry in 1972, a cover of The Miracles' "You Really Got A Hold On Me", fared no better, getting as high as #98. McCormick's version has a soul/blues infusion that deserved a better chart fate. In 1973, McCormick married and relocated to Hawaii. Her last song was "Coming In, Out Of The Rain" that went to # 46 (Adult Contemporary) on Shady Brook Records (released only as a 45 single) in October of 1975 & that was her last swan song. She eventulally retired to suburban Saint Louis where she passed away in 2016.
"Parachute Pants" were an early-mid. '80s trend. They were colored (often brightly so) pants, made out of nylon (a material used for parachutes, as well - but the pant material was rarely (if EVER) "parachute nylon" (whatever that aggregate of materials is actually composed of, anyway!). Some idjit yungins MAY have started calling those oversized garbage bag pants that M.C. Hammer appeared in, in the late '80s/verge of the '90s the same (or a similar) thing. ...but: OFFICIALLY that was NEVER the name. Some peeps MAY have used that as a way to refer to them because they looked "big & wide" (as an open parachute does) ...but: ACTUAL "Parachute Pants" were relatively TIGHT and often had "cargo"-type pockets (or at least zippered pockets), on the thigh/leg. THAT is what they were (and anyone who says different: either: is too young to know ...or lived in the wrong place (where they used such a name, incorrectly, for ANOTHER thing!😡🤬👎)!
At last!!! Thank you Amber and Jordan for this great song. Requested this song so many times. Gayle McCormick, one of the most Beautiful (looking) singers from that era. Please do " Put a Little love in your Heart " by Jackie DeShannon, you will love it, from same era.
What everybody said about all the versions of this classic song. Starting with the fact that it was written by phenomenal Bert Bacharach and Hal David killer songwriting duo. Yes, Lord!! But since Jay and Amber are fans of that gritty soul pop, another in that vein that if you haven't already done it I would highly recommend is "STAY WITH ME" by Lorraine Ellison. (1966) You may also wish to try Bette Midler's live-ish version from THE ROSE (1979). Either way, get out the extra large box Kleenex before you listen to it. 😭
Thanks to Quentin Tarantino for adding this to the movie Deathproof as it was where I first heard it. That and Hold Tight! By Dave Dee,Dozy, Beaky, Mick, and Titch! 😊
You should check out “Death Proof” from Quentin Tarantino on your movie reaction. This is where I first heard this version of “Baby It’s You” from Smith (I only knew of The Beatles version and the original version from The Shirelles…my favorite version btw)…but this version fr Smith plays a big part in one of the scenes that always stands out in my mind when I hear Smith’s version!!! Quentin Tarantino always has great music in his movies. This is one of them!
Gayle floored me too. I thought there was a bit of Janis in her too. A few years ago I bought both Smith albums and a few of Gayle's solo album, but unfortunately she never completely replicated what she did on this song. I felt that was a total waste of an extraordinary talent. I don't know if that was her doing, or the poor choices of record companies. From what I've read of her, she may have been uncomfortable becoming a star. Some of Smith's other stuff was good, but never got the airplay this song did.
The Shirelles did it first. The Beatles did a great cover and was one of John Lennon's best vocals. This is a different style, but It's just a great song.
How about following this with the Janis Joplin song MOVE OVER. And then maybe we can squeeze in an underrated song featuring Taylor Dayne's vocal power and passion. SEND ME A LOVER should do the trick. And let's introduce your audience to the odd style of Grace Jones. The former model and singer who at onetime was tge love interest of Dolph Lundgren. You know him him from his role as Ivan Drago in ROCKY IV. I'M NOT PERFECT (BUT I'M PERFECT, FOR YOU ). Keep going and enjoy
