Amazing. I am a blue's deciple for 50 years and somehow I missed this fantastic talent. I recently got in to the 21st century with a smart phone. It has provided so much beautiful music that I wish I had done it sooner. I will follow Janivas career and see her live. All I can say is WOW!
Lost my phone for 2 days and was utube lonely Same here I don't know how I wasn't introduced to the fabulous blues sound Colin James does this song He's a Canadian blues man. More blues 💙
Janiva Magness has the most affecting voice and presence, as well as the best choices of material of any American female singer since Eva Cassidy died. This is so haunting and personal, I listen over and over.
Incredible. This might be the saddest song every written (Delbert McLinton) but it is hauntingly beautiful nonetheless...especially with that whiskey stained vocal and all that heartfelt emotion pouring through. Janiva Magness just absolutely kills it.
Gives me chills. Meet her and seen here live been a fan ever since. Magness was born in Detroit, Michigan, but suffered the tragedy of losing both of her parents to suicide before she reached her mid-teens. Placed in a series of a dozen foster homes, Magness was pregnant at the age of 17, and gave her baby daughter up for adoption
I just discovered her years ago on Woodsong and was blown away!! In fact it was probably when this video was shot. She has had such a difficult life & you feel it come from deep in her soul when she sings! What a voice!!!
Master class blues ballad. Masterclass in pain too. Honestly can’t think of better. This equals Nina or Billie’s ‘You Don’t Know What Love Is’. Yep, that league.
Yes, I am in love with Janiva Magness. OK, we got that on the record. She was born 5 days after me and she has wisdom and beauty in the songs that she has written and the songs that she had interpreted from other writers. She is amazing in any evaluation.
RIDEMIDSaw Janiva last night in Huntington Beach. The music was truly masterful by this fantastic group of true blues players and Janiva's vocals as good as or better than anyone out there singing blues music. Please come back to HB or Orange. County soon and bless us with your great gift of music. Keeping playin baby and god bless
She loves him so much, that she can't believe they are going out. She says "she will always have him 'til the end of time..." meaning, the memory of him and how good it was for her (what they had). She may have needed him, but she also loved him .... a lot. This is the way I intepret the song. Sad, but really good song. She loved him enough (so much) to let him "be". Janiva sings it great. dorm7guard
Lawdy Lawdy was I just moved by those vocals....as I ready to play it three more times in a row. Just beautiful. I heard Janiva be playing in Huntington Beach in February 2017 I will. Be there
I absolutely love this woman and her work! As a guitarist I would love for her to snap those fingers for me and set the tempo...I would play guitar for her any day, any time!
I heard this for the first time about a year ago. I haven't played it for months...........forgot how powerful and soulful this is. Absolute art when she can create such a painful picture. Of course, Delbert laid a magnificent set of lyrics to the simple sad tune. What a combination!
I never lost you. The song is sad, but yet the person is grateful for the relationship that they had. Sometimes one meets someone and they can't believe that that person actually asked them out...their heart starts pumping everytime they are near them. In the back of your mind, you say "even if it doesn't last, I am glad just to have had this relationship and to have been with this person...one could get really hurt thinking "that person is theirs." dorm7guard
i know this song means alot to you babe. it does me also. we both feel like it was writen for... and.... about us. i do know you were mine and you will always be mine i miss your lovin touch babe
I saw someone again today Who remembered me and you They asked all the same old questions I gave the same excuse They said what a shame, what a shame To lose a love so fine But I never lost you I never really lost you I never lost you You were never mine I kept on believing What I wanted to believe The unspoken promises Them that you could never keep But it's a sin, oh, it's a sin to tell yourself a lie But I never lost you I never lost you I never lost you You were never mine Did you give me all that you gave me Just because, 'cause I needed you But when I needed all your love completely Was it more, more than you could do Sometimes deep in the night When I hold you in my dreams I get lost in your loving touch, baby I can't believe how real it seems And I know, Lord, I know I'll have you 'til the end of time 'Cause I never lost you I never lost you I never lost you 'Cause you were never mine I never lost you I never really lost you How could I lose you 'Cause you were never mine
