Counterfeit Kingdom has been on my radar since it was released. I’ve listened to Holly Pivec on various podcasts the past year or two. She seems very knowledgeable! NAR/Hillsong have been groups I’ve steered far away from. I married into a family that has some members full-on Word of Faith and they’re all very damaging. I also agree with you about audiobooks! Lol. I’ve stated this before in groups and people have come out of the woodwork to defend their stance and to attack! Lol. I know our culture loves to change definitions with their words, but reading is reading. AUDIObooks are listening. Both are still experiencing the story, but you are experiencing them differently. If people want to count them as books read, they can do what they want, but there isn’t an argument I’ve heard yet to persuade my opinion.
I think you should definitely pick it up! And yes, I think they know what they are talking about … they’ve had years of experience looking in to the teachings! And 100% agree with what you said about audiobooks. 😂 same story. Different experiences! 😆
Charlotte's Web is my favourite childhood story!! Still makes me cry lol. I really enjoyed The Martian although all the math/science went over my head... I'm kinda freaked out of space too lol!
"...expand your vocabulary, please!" Yes and Amen! 😂 There are so many better ways to say things and it always puzzles me when an author goes that route, over and over again, instead...
Hi Carmen! You cracked me up a few times during this video, especially when you said every character needed Jesus in Wuthering Heights. I've heard a lot of people complain about that book. Part of me wants to read it because it's a classic and part of me doesn't want to read it because of the complaints. I have read the first two books of The Tales of Ivy Hill by Julie Klassen. I really enjoyed them. I need to read the third one and the Christmas novella. I want to check out The Gresham Chronicles that you mentioned. Thank you for sharing.
😆 yeah, I am glad i read it and checked it off my classics TBR but yeah. I just couldn’t believe how nasty the characters were to each other 🫢 And yes, I’m looking forward to reading more of Julie Klassen’s books and continuing the series … But yes! You must read The Gresham Chronicles!!! So so good ☺️
@Carmen Janae I've also heard Artemis isn't good. The main character in Project Hail Mary is a school teacher and a really good guy. I think there were 2 instances of cuss words, and both were used when something insane happened. But clean language otherwise.
I'm very interested in reading Counterfeit Kingdom. Music has been a major player in my life I struggle with wanting to listen to worldly music from time to time because I grew up very much in the world, and the sounds are nostalgic. I have had the same questions and concerns about Christian music...most definitely want to read this book!
I also read Wuthering Heights for the two challenges you did. I found it to be a very dark story. My favourite character is the maid. She modeled the character of Jesus the most.😊
The authors of Counterfeit Kingdom were on Jan Markell (Olive Tree Views) this morning (1-28). It was an interesting interview but Jan has talked about the NAR movement a lot. I may read it because Jan loved it but I have so much TBR. I was reading Murder at the Vicarage but DNF. I’m done with Agatha Christie. She uses blasphemies all the time. I spotted something in Death on the Nile that was mocking. She is so overrated. My opinion. Great video!👏🏻
I get having so much on the TBR … the struggle is real 😂 and yes, I don’t love Agatha Christie as much as most people but i did really enjoy the Tommy and Tuppence books … so i don’t know how much of her books I’ll actually read. It’s definitely not high priority. . .
If you love Elizabeth Elliot, you’ve got to read “Becoming Elizabeth Elliot” by Ellen Vaughn! It is so good, one of my favorite non-fictions. Also, I understand why you did not finish that book. I recently read a book that I shouldn’t have read. I ignored my convictions and read it anyway. I felt the loss of intimacy with Jesus. I have since gotten it out of my house and I’m going to really gaurd my choices in what I’m reading. We are called to actively resist sin. And it can be tough in our American culture where the danger for us is with complacency. Even if other Christian’s are doing it, I have to obey Christ. I believe Elizabeth Elliot taught lots on this subject. 😉 As for wrestling with suffering, I find my greatest encouragement from the book of 1 Peter. I’ve been reading and rereading it for weeks now. Jesus suffered and never once retaliated. We are called to walk in this same manner. Its not going to be easy here, but it will only be for a short time. And then we will be with Him forever and ever!🥰 Also, I have to tell you, when I saw your review on Goodreads about “Wuthering Heights” I busted out laughing. “Every character needs Jesus!” 😆 I haven’t read it, but I think I’ll pass now. There are other books that give a gothic feel without feeling so dark. As always, I love listening to you reviews! ☺️
Oh Becoming Elizabeth sounds interesting! Thanks for the recommendation! And yes, it’s so true with what you said about being active in resisting sin. With books it can be so easy to just ignore certain things because you wanna read a book, especially if it’s a popular one … and thanks for that reminder on suffering! Definitely gonna have to go read I Peter again!
