Pete: "Could not see these blooming northern lights and I don't think I ever well." Chris: "Oh I'm glad you saw it!" *insert* "I'd say my biggest weakness is listening" meme.
As an artist that focuses on the human face, it really makes you realize the variety that is normal, even drawing beautiful people you kinda go huh, I didn’t realize how tall their forehead is, or how long their nose is. Drawing faces has made me realize I’m not as weird looking as I thought, like I don’t have a giant egg forehead, it’s actually fairly normal. 🤦🏻♀️
Chris Broad talking about a Florida man. I feel seen (as a Floridian in Tampa) 😆Lost power for 5 days and I will never joke about hurricanes ever again. I taught in Japan for 6 years (I recently left this past January, but moving back next spring) and always joked about hurricane parties (buying your favorite food to prepare because you can't go to work or school), but Milton was honestly traumatic. Thanks for your well wishes ❤ Listening to your podcast helped me have some normalcy and sleep as the hurricane hit. Slowly getting back to normal now.
On drinking and hangover. The night of drinking booze actually dehydrates you. So, drinking water through the night helps. Then in the morning a sports drink like Gatorade will help get rid of the hangover if you have one.
Pete: first, I miss your boglin. I hope he's doing well. Second, when the northern lights were visible in the Southern US, they were only visible by cell camera. I was able to get a number of pictures without fiddling with any of the settings (mainly because I never learned how to do that with my phone) and they came out brilliantly.
The latest video in the main channel was great, the riding the shinkansen one, its got the old Abroad in Japan videos vibe! nothing controversial, no hot takes.. it was carried by your brand of humor. Its these types of videos that I enjoy rewatching over and over again.
I've lived in Japan and while they do comment on looks way more than they do in Canada and I do feel more pressure to look put together there, the pressure doesn't feel quite as bad as Korea; plastic surgery isn't considered "very normal" on the same level it is in Korea. I could definitely live in Japan again; on the other hand I love kpop but as a woman in my 40's I don't think you could pay me to live in Korea I just feel like I'd be so insecure and hate myself.
Quite amusingly, I was in the Co Op in Cross Hills in North Yorkshire on Sunday, talking to a member of staff when I heard a familiar voice talking about having a holiday in space. I thought Pete was an actual DJ and not a Shoppers’ Paradise Gary Davis crawling up DLT’s Cleveland dilated entrance. Oh man. I used to get embarrassed about doing half an hour a week on Bradford Community Broadcasting, but Co Op radio? Keep reaching for the rainbow, the pot of gold is Primark FM and the Farm Foods phone call.
14:56 hmm some suggestion is to bring a healthy snack or homemade lunch that way you don't eat out from a combini when you go out? i live in the city where i'm surrounded by a lot of pubs, korean bbqs, japanese etc. its tough at first but you get used to it, it becomes a habit. been there and i'm slowly losing weight consistently now
Having a small face is a compliment in Japan. It refers to the size of your face/head in comparison to your body. Many Japanese have quite a big head compared to the size of the rest of their body so it's about the proportions. Having a "small face" also equals to スタイルがいい
To avoid hangovers drink liquor+soda drinks, eg vodka soda or the ubiquitous whiskey highball. No sugar and keeps you hydrated. You can still drink yourself into a hangover if you go too hard but it helps.
14:40 ''I'll get on it right away, when I've got a free moment to lose weight'' My guy, eating less SAVES you time. Unless you go out of your way to spend more time cooking on a caloric deficit haha.
My country has this program called “healthy plate”. We were taught to eat quarter portion of protein, quarter portion of rice (because it’s a staple food, u can change to other carbo) and 1/2 of your plate for vegies and fruits. Because we’re big on gravy, we were taught how many scoops of gravy is healthy 🤣🤣🤣. Its very helpful if you love to eat or when you eat out.
The military question definitely depends on where you are, and where you are from. Someone from the UK Air Force visiting Tokyo would be a curiosity, and not raise any unusual response. Someone from the US Marine Corps, visiting Okinawa should probably keep that information to themselves.
I saw northern lights 4 days ago in Iceland. Took pictures, of course if you edit it looks more impressive. But it's hard to define "editing" with cellphone computational photography out of the box already being pretty much already considerably processed. If you own a Samsung use night mode on northern lights, it will blow your top off.
"While I understand the push for body positivity, it's important to recognize that beauty standards have always existed across different cultures, including Japan, and they play a role in shaping societal expectations. Kids growing up should be encouraged to strive for self-improvement, discipline, and resilience, rather than being told that any standard is unfair or oppressive. These ideals reflect values that motivate people to better themselves, and abandoning them in favor of 'accepting everything' could lead to a generation that settles for mediocrity rather than pushing their limits and bettering themselves."
Dove screwed up witht their marketing. There was no need to mention anything Japanese or reference any culture. They could have simply said something more overarching like "See that woman Katie Hopkins? Don't look or fucking act like her"
I feel like this is a mistake that only local Japanese reps/marketers would make, lol. I just can’t see this faux pa not being easily predicted by an American marketing group.
Dove pissing off both Japanese beauty standards and western fat activists shows how important it is to do a little bit of market research first before spewing nonsense.
In regards to Lt Dan, Joe. I'm not sure you've spent enough time in Florida to be speaking on who or who not to stay away from. You tell us all the about youtubers traveling to Japan while not knowing the culture and being disrespectful. I'm a Tampa local and have lived in Florida for 37 years. Sure Joe has mug shots. Sorry to tell you, everyone in Florida has papers. "Come on vacation, leave on probation" is literally a thing here. "He tried to set a woman on fire" - wrong, he was cleaning a park bench with a little gas on a rag at night. "Resisting arrest" he punched a cop. Who hasn't. "Assault and batt" he hit a methhead. Those are literally the worst of his charges. The rest are failure to appear and drug charges. Joe just wanted to be left alone and no body would respect that from the beginning. To the point his own daughter is clout chasing. He didn't ask to get involved with any of the kick degenerates. They all flocked to him. #leavejoealone.
There's a reason why the "Florida Man" meme exists. All the justification in the world could not explain all the kookiness going on down there ... lol 😅😂 With Headlines such as: "Florida man charged with assault after throwing alligator through Wendy’s drive-thru window"
