I recently went to Japan and after emptying my wallet for a wagyu steak, I decided to get a more affordable dessert at a konbini nearby. Pursuing the isles, I was pleasantly surprised to find Coolish ice-cream. This podcast is the only way I knew such a glorious frozen treat even existed. Pete, thanks for being the unofficial Coolish spokesperson. It certainly lived up to the hype. Any chance we can get some more Coolish content?

Dear Cokrot Chris and Punypenis Pete In the heart of rural Japan, I embarked on a humorous quest to teach English to a group of lively middle schoolers. One day, aiming to enlighten them with animal vocabulary, I found myself performing a series of animal sounds, from 'meows' to 'woofs.' The real comedy unfolded when my attempt at a rooster's crow sounded more like a distress signal, sending the classroom into uncontrollable laughter. The crowning moment, however, was my attempt to mimic a cow, which somehow translated into a passionate declaration of love for vegetables in Japanese, earning me the nickname "Vegetable Lover" among the students. This linguistic slip turned into an enduring source of amusement and a memorable lesson in the unpredictable joys of language teaching. So, have you ever faced a hilarious language mix-up or cultural misunderstanding that left you laughing and learned? A moment where miscommunication turned into an unexpected bonding experience? RONALD, Hong Kong

I would imagine the thinking behind the ribbon on the phone is "the owner is probably having a crappy day, having lost their phone and frantically searching for it. Let's do something nice and wrap it in a ribbon so they feel better about it".

When I and my husband were visiting Japan for a month back in 2017, I was lucky enough to experience the lovely hospitality of Japan twice. Once in Kyoto(at the golden pavilion, right before closing time) as we were leaving, I went to the bathroom and forgot my camera hanging on the bathroom door. Thankfully just a little ways down the road I realized that I had left it, sprinted back, and frantically explained to the line of waiting elementary students in line for the bathroom that I just needed to check for my camera, only for a nice student to wave me down and run with me back to the souvenir desk, where they had already turned in my camera as a lost item. It was no trouble to get my camera back(it looks like they just skimmed through a few of my photos until they saw me in them, then they gave my camera back) I was so thankful to the students who had turned it in. And then near the end o my trip when I was shopping in an Animate in sunshine city, when I went to pay on the like 7th floor I accidentally dropped my pasimo card (which is practically just like dropping money on the ground) once again, thankfully as we were walking back to the train station I noticed it was missing, which led to a whole lot of running back to the store and all the way up to the 7th floor to check if I dropped it there. I went to the cash and asked if they had found a pasimo card(very out of breath and looking frantic at this point), and they said they had and gave it back to me and apologized for the trouble! I just couldn’t believe it and kept thanking them for returning it to me. Really everyone is just so nice. (I did also help return some dropped school books earlier in my trip to some school students who were running around kyoto castle, so I did feel like I got to return some of the goodwill I was given during my trip, but still just so thankful nobody just picked up either my camera or pasimo card and just kept it for themselves as they both were fairly valuable)

I handed in a forgotten bag of souvenirs I found in Tokyo Skytree over to security and the process took a lot longer than I'd anticipated. Luckily I was leaving Japan the following morning and understood just enough Japanese to communicate that fact and turn down any possible reward.

There are a few plot points that do hit you hard emotionally, but it is certainly worth finishing. IMO, it is one of the best game of the PS4 generation and probably the best game set in historical Japan (even if it is pretty anachronistic, presenting an iconic feudal Japan rather than an accurate one)

This is one of my favourite podcasts, just the right length and you cover a lot of new and interesting things in each episode. It's interesting to hear about that asshole JET, I'm applying this Autumn and read on the subreddit about a similar situation someone went through recently, wherein the predecessor JET upsold their stuff to them for an inflated price and employed some scare tactics to do so.

Bringing found items to the police... I've done it THREE times... all of them wallets. It is insane. You have to sit with the police while they empty the contents and write down EXACTLY what is inside and then double check everything. It takes a very long time. First time I got cookies hanging on my apartment door (a bit of a privacy invasion there unless the police did it for her). Second time I got the wallet and its contents after 6 months. Third time I didn't hear anything.

This is my inner cynic talking, but that Kyoto phone incident could have been a case of the legendary Kyoto passive-aggression. You know, like when they tell you "hey, that's a nice watch you're wearing" and what they really mean is "LOOK AT YOUR WATCH IT IS TIME FOR YOU TO LEAVE BECAUSE I CAN'T STAND BEING AROUND YOU A MINUTE LONGER". In this case the subtext could possibly have been "You caused us so much trouble looking for the owner of the phone, we figured it was no trouble at all by comparison to WRAP IT UP IN A BOW".

This is the quintessential "hiding in plain sight, catch me if you can." I don't know if this speaks to the capabilities or lack thereof of the police force in Japan or if people here just don't really care that if it's not on their door step then it doesn't affect them. Dissociation and compartmentalization.

in japan, hotels charge per person, and not per room. So if only one person stays, the hotel will profit less and may even lose money. So some hotels may charge you a little more for single occupancy. In any case, nothing to be worried about because you will know exactly how much you are being charged for when making a booking for your room.

Metal detecting in Britain is quite popular in Britain, especially on beaches during the summer. By law (I believe) any valuables you find must be turned into the Police. They take your details, and if the valuables are not claimed within a period of time then you get to keep them. The same thing happens should you find valuables in the street. :-)

I think it's worth providing context that the people responsible for this bombing called the Mitsubishi Heavy Industries plant *twice* with the intent of having them evacuate the factory and it was disregarded as a hoax, they clearly didn't want civillians killed they were trying to destroy a factory that produced vehicles used by the US Army in the Vietnam war. While I think we can all agree that what they did was wrong (as did they themselves, after having been caught) I do think people are quite quick to leave out this detail, it's not like they did the most deadly terrorist attack in Japanese history at that point because they were trying to wrack up a high score or something.

Dear C#nty Chris and Pricky Pete Venturing into Tokyo's electric heart, Akihabara, I stumbled upon a VR café, a digital oasis amidst the urban desert. There, I was catapulted into a virtual feudal Japan, a realm of ethereal sakura and shimmering horizons. My guide, a digital samurai, challenged me to a duel that blurred the boundaries of the virtual and the real. With a virtual katana in hand, I engaged in a ballet of blades, a dance that pushed the limits of my senses and perception. This encounter, a duel of bytes rather than brawn, left me contemplating the fluid line between reality and the digital mirage. It was an exploration of perception, a test of valor not against flesh, but against the fabric of the virtual itself.I wonder, have you ever found yourselves lost in an experience where the digital world felt as palpable as the physical, where the lines of reality were not just blurred but seemingly erased? Yours Anders in Sweden
