One thing that surprises me is, from reading the comments, many people think that Japan just begins to invest in region to compete with China. Actually, Japan has been investing in the region massively since the 80s. Thanks to 1985 Plaza Accord, Yen value increased and Japan had to invest oversea for lower production cost. During that period, Japan invested massively in Thailand, Malaysia Indonesia and other countries. With Japanese investment, many countries developed and moved from lower income to middle income countries. Japan also invested in many infrastructure project. Even there is the competition from China and South Korea in last decades, Japan is still one of the biggest invester in Southeast Asia.

Everything you've written is true. However, as the analysts point out, the reason why Japan is investing in Cambodia is to "counter" Chinese influence. In fact, the only reason why the U.S., E.U., and Australia are paying attention to poor countries right now is due to Chinese investment. China simply doesn't care, because all investments help these nations.

The only Chinese thing about it is that it's developed by a Chinese company. China can only dream of being a cultural and soft power behemoth like Japan is.

Everyone uses the term "Free and Open Indo-Pacific", may someone please define that? As well we are all aware that when the US speaks of "Freedom of Navigation" they are ONLY referring to Freedom of Navigation for their military vessels, the Chinese benefits the most from Freedom of Navigation of seaborne commercial traffic.
@paulsteaven
@paulsteaven Год назад
Remember those land features and artificial islands built and illegally occupied by China (according to international law)? Western countries, Japan, SoKor, Australia, and India were wary that China might used them in the future in harassing those Western Countries' merchant shippings. "they are ONLY referring for their military vessels," That's the point, if China can issue warnings against those naval ships, what more to those unarmed merchants shippings?
@shencheanglow3726
@shencheanglow3726 Год назад
Freedom for the affordable or rich country to do whatever they want according to the rules their congress set up. Case in point, it use to be within the rule of law set up by the western countries before 1949 for western gun boats to sail thousand miles upstream of Yangzi rivers to inland cities like Chungking. This rule of law was broken by Mao Tze Tung.
@paulsteaven
@paulsteaven Год назад
@@shencheanglow3726 yeah sure China was humiliated by Western powers after they kicked out the last Imperial Dynasty, but did it gave justification for China to occupy someone else's EEZ in the South China Sea and do the same humiliation that they experienced to its smaller neighbours? Also, maybe you forgot that China is also a rich country and its Congress (commie politburo) passed a law authorising the China Coast Guard to use its weapons against foreign ships who violated it's so called sovereignty in the South China Sea. You were talking about that 1949 bs when China is a signatory of UNCLOS, which is far more recent than that pre-WWII humiliation suffred by China.
@peteryoung8541
@peteryoung8541 Год назад
@@paulsteaven So in response there are two questions: 1. Where are the majority of those vessels travelling to and from? and 2. Which country benefits the most from this commercial traffic? The obvious answer is...yes China!! This attitude reminds me of that skit posted on RU-vid where an Australian Minister questioned his security specialists on why why need to spend billions of Dollars on the military to defend Australia's trade WITH China against China in the South China Sea. As well if you don't like the Chinese claims on the South China Seas then as Col. Douglas MacGregor (retired) stated you will NOT like the Taiwanese policy on the South China Seas, they are basically the same.

Proof is in the pudding, as they say. Looking back in history, remembering the intentions and actions of the various powers, would we now more likely trust those who tried to suppress and exploit us, or those who refrained from such, instead try to forge a relative win-win condition for all? We have not only been realising the reality of each player through the ages, but have been gaining the ability to choose who we want to align with and who we are more wary of. If those who want to win back our confidence, won't it be logical they will have to put in more effort, not just to win us over, but to repair our lost confidence and belief in their intentions and integrity?!

The modern relations between the Kingdom of Siam. (The name was changed to Thailand in 1939.) and the Empire of Japan was established in 1887, but the close relations began during the 1930s. After the 1932 Siamese Revolution which transformed Absolute Monarchy to Constitutional Monarchy, the Siamese government improved the relations with Japan. According to many academic researches, since the absolute government had a close relations with Western Great Powers, Britain and France, so the new post - revolution government improved the relations with Japan with the intention to guarantee the stability and international recognition of the government. In the same way, Japan, saw the opportunity to reduce the role of Britain and France in the region, so the close relations began. During the period, Thailand had cooperated many things with Japan. Thailand began the industrialization with Japan as a model. Many students were awarded the scholarship to study in Japan. And there was also the military cooperation. With the high nationalistic sentiment at the time, and the Fall of France to Nazi Germany in 1940, Thai government sent the troops to the French - occupied Indochina to take the territories which Siam lost to France during the reign of King Rama V (1853 - 1910 reigned 1868 - 1910) back. This led to the Franco - Thai War which was consisted of ground, naval, and aerial warfare. Most of warfare between both sides occurred in the Northeast region of Thailand and in the French - occupied areas in Indochina. One of the most well known events of this war, moreover than the first aerial warfare in Thai history, was the naval battle between Thai and French battleships near Ko Chang (Battle of Ko Chang) in the eastern sea of Thailand. The war ended in May 1941 (began in October 1940) after the negotiation between two sides mediated by the officers from the Empire of Japan was concluded. France had to cede some areas to Thailand. Thailand made those areas to be a provinces of Thailand and ruled them between 1941 - 1946. After the World War II ended, Thailand had to cede those areas back to France. Today, they are parts of Laos and Cambodia. The The Victory Monument in Bangkok was built to dedicate to those who lost their lives in this war. After this war, Japan and Thailand had a closer relations. In 1941, Thailand was invaded by the Japanese troops. Despite a little resistance by the Thai military and police officers and the "Youth Soldiers", especially in the Southern Thailand, to avoid the mass destruction, the Thai government decided to become the ally of the Empire of Japan. The Japanese established the troops in the country, while Thailand could retain the independence and the freedom to control the internal affairs. Japan is the first country which Thailand establishes the ambassadorial level of relations and the diplomatic representative is the ambassador. Before that time, the Siamese representatives in Europe were mostly the legations to many European nations. During this time, the Japanese troops from Thai bases had the critical role to the vicotry of Japan in the invasion of Burma, Malaya, Singapore and Ducth East Indies. Many British, American, and Dutch POWs were captured and forced to work in the construction of the notorious Death Railway in Kanchanaburi Province in the west of Thailand. Even Thailand faced less hardship than many Asian territories which were occupied by the Japanese. There were hardships from the economy and the attacks from the Allied forces to the Japanese bases in the country. After Thailand and Japan became ally before the Pacific theater of the World War II began, Thailand should be one of Axis powers. However, due to the actions of Free Thai Movement, a group of Thai people who disagreed with the government's commitment with the Imperial Japan and cooperated secretly with the Allied powers in many ways such as intelligence during the war, Thailand became a neutral after the war ended and the country, including the government did not faced the punishments from the Allied powers as other Axis nations faced. Thailand just paid some little reparations to Britain and France, sent a rice to Britain to feed the people in British Colonies, and returned the territories it occupied after 1941 Franco - Thai war and 1942 Japanese occupation of Burma/Malaya back to Britain and France. Those territories are parts of Myanmar, Malaysia, Laos and Cambodia in the present. As the legacy of Japanese brutality during the war was less than other Asian countries, and many Thai people have had the positive view to the Japanese since the close relation era in the 1930s, Thailand becomes one of the most pro - Japanese countires in Asia. The positive feeling increased during the 1980s when Japanese companies invested many projects in Thailand, created a thousands of jobs, and made Thailand become the middle income nation in the 1990s. Japan also invested in many infrasturcture project, such as the MRT train. The Japanese cultural products, movies, series, Mangas, Animes and Pop songs are also very popular. Many songs were translated into Thai language. Even there are more competitions from China in investment and from South Korea in entertainment industry in recent years, Japan is still regarded as one of the most favourite countries in the view of many Thai people. Fun Facts: 1. There was a Japanese warrior named Yamada Nagamasa, who was the ruler of Nakhon Sri Thammarat in Southern Siam during the Ayutthaya period. 2. The building of the Royal Thai Embassy in Tokyo is formerly the house of Pujie, the younger brother of Emperor Puyi, the last emperor of China. Pujie married Hiro Saga, the Japanese noblewoman. 3. There is Thai businessman named Boonpong Sirivejjabhandu who secretly supplied the medicines for the POWs during the World War II. 4. There is a Thai classical novel named "คู่กรรม Khu Gam" or "The Sun Sets At Chao Phraya". It is about the love between Japanese soldier named Kobori and Thai woman named Angsumalin. It has been adapted into movies and TV dramas for many versions. 5. Thailand also has the sister group of AKB48. BNK48 is Thai version and one of many "Sister Groups" of AKB48, the idol girl group originated from Japan. They become popular after the great success of Thai version of "Koi Suru Fortune Cookie" which was released in late 2017. The song became popular, became national phenomenon and also made the Group become national phenomenon. Today, the MV of the song has more than 190 million views. This number is nearly as equal as the MV of original Japanese version and the number is still increasing. Many of their other songs also have more than 10 - 20 million views. After the great success, the Group becomes popular and many members have many works, such as being invited as the guests in many TV shows (They also have their own TV variety shows.), being presenters in many TV advertisements and being actresses in many movies, TV dramas ("ละคร Lakorn" in Thai. Many of the members had some acting careers before becoming the Group's members.) and TV series. After the great success of Thai version of "Koi Suru Fortune Cookie", the group becomes very popular and has the expansion with the debut of the 2nd Generation in 2018 and the 3rd Generation in 2022 and the debut of CGM48 in 2020. The problem of senkaku/diaoyu island is a problem inherited by the West/US to make relations between China and Japan to always be tense, the US will use Japan as the front bumper against China in any conflict with china. In the history that I learned, the Senkaku Islands are Chinese territory, before the World War 1, Japan took the Senkaku Islands by force from China, and China could do nothing to prevent it. after Japan lost in world war 2, the US returned the disputed island area to Japan not to China, this was a landmine planted by the US so that Asia would continue to conflict. I think japan should be careful with the West's hidden intention to pit Japan against China. In a real open war if China+ Russia vs West+Japan, it is the Japanese and Chinese sides that will suffer the most losses, due to the close geographical location of the two neighboring countries. I hope Japan and China are able to solve the problem well😍love peace.

@thboy1037
@thboy1037 Год назад
This is the reason why Japan is Thailand's favourite country. During the World War II, Thai government decided to become the alliance with Japan to avoid mass destruction like what happened in other Asian countries. As the legacy of Japanese brutality in Thailand during the war was less than other Asian countries, and many Thai people have had the positive view to the Japanese since the close relation era in the 1930s, Thailand becomes one of the most pro - Japanese countires in Asia.

@@firasajoury7813 Yeah, but Genshin is clearly imitating Japanese anime and the art style was "inspired" by Breath of the Wild. So most people who installed it based on first impressions did so because they thought it was Japanese. Just like how Chinese company Miniso tries to sell itself as a Japanese lifestyle store (like Daiso) when the company is not Japanese at all.

If we stay in the past rather than the future, we have no future. Every new generation has a new path, and we must not impose it on them.

@@bixbu9844 : Clearly, YOU have not looked at Japanese current political structure. It really has not changed much from the imperial days except name changed. Those "elected" officials are from families of the imperial court. To be elected as PM, you must be endorsed by the oldest military organization and their families. All "elected" PMs are from the well-known imperial house. Go study their "gov't" structure. Japan still has imperial ambition which is hidden under a veneer of softer power. For the atrocities inflicted in Asia (worse than H*tler), to this day, Japan couldn't man up to it. It refused to apologize for it. That tells you what you need to know about Japan. Frankly, it wouldn't bother me if Japanese go extinct.

We can't ignore the fact that Japan has a lot to offer and if we want to develop our economy, we have to take the opportunities. we're moving forward, but never forgetting the past. we're cooperating, and we benefit from them. our children benefit from them. our countries benefit from them. but, as I say, moving forward doesn't mean we're forgetting the past. In fact, without the past, we might not be able to push forward and improve. peace,
