310 Kph on the Shinkansen is as smooth as glass with very little sensation of speed until you enter a tunnel. If a Shinkensen is a minute late it's a news story in Japan. You can literally set your watch by the arrival and departure of the trains. The cars are spotless, inside and out, and the bathrooms are clean and spacious. If we had that kind of train service in the U.S. the airlines with their tiny seats, "go f_ _ _ _ yourself" attitudes, surcharge after surcharge, and peanuts if your lucky, would either go belly up, or learn what customer service means.
@willfe
@willfe 5 лет назад
I'd love to see nationwide train service like this. Crossing the country in 10 hours by comfy train beats cramming into an airplane for a 6 hour ride hands-down. Monstrously expensive to build and run though; we've got a lot more ground to cover in the States than they do in Japan. And I can't say whether I would worry more if a private corporation tried to do it or our government did. Either way it probably wouldn't match the high standard set by the Shinkansen.

I would be interested to see what the profitability of these trains are. With the religious maintenance of the trains and the lines themselves the upkeep has to be seriously costly. In the US the CEO’s would never spend so much on maintenance if they could avoid it. All they care is increased shareholder values. Just look at the US Airline industry,they go to extremes to avoid maintenance costs. Outsourcing to low wage countries,spreading out maintenance intervals to the minimum the manufacturers and the FAA will allow.
@tommykurnia1980
@tommykurnia1980 10 лет назад
These huge cost of maintenances and replacements of various parts and supporting facilities causes the high price of shinkanses service. Actually it is pretty simple, good service = high price. It is a simple math... So, you can't expect these type of trains runs with subsidize from the government, as a part of public service obligation. Except, for the local train or some suburb service, that's another thing.

Lived though the Depression, World War II and everything since and can't believe how far the leadership of this country has deteriorated. There isn't anything to the Donald. He thinks he is the star of yet another reality show. He has given the far right tacit approval to do whatever they can to disrupt an already fracture society.
