The Japanese government has announced that it will build the world's largest Aegis destroyer. With a displacement of 20,000 tons and a length of 210 meters and a width of 40 meters, it will be the largest ship in the Maritime Self-Defense Force. It is said that two ships will be built, Yamato and Musashi of Reiwa.

Japan showed the world how to use aircraft carriers as a strike force. The USA at the time thought that carriers would only be used as air cover for the battleships. It looks like the Japanese are innovating again. I bet they are building ships that are Missile trucks and drone carriers. Watch and learn.

It's called the Yamato Class Missile Defense Cruiser. Flight I ships in the class are the Yamato (大和) and the Fuso (扶桑). Flight II ships are the Mizuho (瑞穂) and the Akitsu (秋津). All named after... well... Japan! -- The radar is a version of the SPY-6 with a massive amidships mounted 256 RMA array which can be tilted to point port or starboard with about 30 times the radiated power of the current SPY-1 radars. Two 9 RMA SPY-6(v)2 rotating arrays (aka Enterprise Air Surveillance Radars) sit atop the forward and aft superstructures. These are typically pointed to cover the opposite 240 degree sectors. In an emergency either of these can be rotated to provide 360 degree coverage. -- Weapon systems are vaguely about 256 Mk41 VLS tubes or a combination of 128 Mk41 cells with about 24 large (1.5m) diameter launch tubes for a mid-course interceptor which may be the American NGI or an entirely new Japanese missile with a range of around 5000km .

@v13r3r
@v13r3r Год назад
@@adventwolfbane I should probably explain my reasoning better but I'm not simply referencing size as in tonnage or beam length. These things will change because of technology. What I'm referencing more so is weapons and roles. Modern cruisers are theatre level support ships while destroyers have always acted as tactical level escorts. If a primary function of your destroyer is to provide theatre wide defence, attack and coordination while also having the equipment to perform these task effectively, your destroyer is no longer working that tactical role. For example: the last thing you want your in theatre missile shield to do is chase down a submarine or target a few patrol boats that other less capable ships can handle. So its going to sit back to provide offensive/defensive protection and will have the weapons and equipment to do so like that land based AEGIS radar with super long range SM6s. This "destroyer" that Japan is building is designed to do what cruisers have been doing for several decades now. Whats the point in pretending its not And yea that does mean admitting the flight 3 ABs are cruisers too if they are indeed going to the Ticos job

LOL Funny enough that this has nothing to do with that. You need to think like a Japanese!!!!!! ... US wanted to deploy land base missile defense system in Japan to defend USA. Japan is a puppet state and has no choice but go with it. At the same time Japan knew that the radar and missiles system would make Japan target number 1 in a war between China or Russia against USA. When they hit Japan, Japan has to respond and defend herself. And Japan wanted no part of another American racketeering war. Someone in Japan came up with this brilliant idea. Move the radar and missiles to sea far far away from Japan. If the ships are sunk, Japan has deniability and can stay out of WWIII. Clever! Japan! Well play!

The closest existing ships outside of Russia and China are the US Ticonderoga class with 122 VLS cells and the ROK King Sejong the Great class with 128 VLS cells. Each of these are around 10K tons fully loaded. The US is retiring the Ticonderoga class and Arleigh Burke destroyers will have to fill the same role with high capabilities overall but fewer VLS cells. Both the US and Japan should consider cooperating together for a new cruiser design. Neither country is that keen on the large costs required to develop, build, crew, and maintain such proposed vessels. Sharing development expenses and expertise might make them mire viable as a project. Personally I think that such a cruiser should be ice class capable and have some amount of armor. They should have the ability to operate in some polar waters without ice breaker escort. These are increasingly important strategic areas for both the USA and Japan. The structure should be extremely robust and armoring sufficient to shrug off man portable weapons should be included. While armor sufficient to resist large missiles is impractical, lighter armor roughly equivalent to modern tanks or at least infantry fighting vehicles could be feasible and useful. This could mitigate some of the threat from attacks by small vessels armed with weapons such as RPGs. The number of VLS cells should be roughly 200. If two groups of 64 VLS cells were included plus eight groups of 5 VLS cells around the outer edge on each side (40 cells port and 40 cells starboard) that would be 208 VLS in total. The primary advantage of such a large vessel however is not the firepower but the size of the radar that could be included and the command and control center to coordinate fleet actions. A very large radar could detect and track missile and aircraft threats at extreme range. This could make them a valuable asset to have at the core of surface fleets.
@stupidburp
@stupidburp Год назад
Propulsion for such cruisers could either be conventional or nuclear. Conventional would be cheaper to build and easier to maintain throughout the lifetime of the vessels. But it would be of modest speed and range and expensive to operate with vulnerability to fuel prices that are quite high right now. A nuclear powered vessel would be more expensive to build and decommission at end of service. It would require specialized infrastructure and personnel to maintain it. But the speed would be quite high, the range only limited by food supplies, and would be much better for polar operations. The power available would assist with breaking through thin surface ice without a dedicated icebreaker. The range would be extremely useful for operating in remote polar regions with limited support available. The power could also potentially help maximize the utilization of a very large radar. For Japan, a nuclear powered vessel would be quite controversial. For the USA it would be no big deal, mostly coming down to a comparative cost benefit analysis. The USA would probably use a reactor similar to those already in use on Ford class or Virginia class and use similar fuel. Japan would likely need to use a new reactor design but the USA, UK, or France could assist with that. USA assistance would be the most likely and most helpful from a technical perspective. Japan is also looking at possibly revitalization of their civilian nuclear power industry. Japan’s strict anti nuclear weapons policy would probably preclude using high enriched fuel, even if was not connected to any weapons program at all. But HALEU fuel enriched up to 19.75% would be feasible. The US might also share advancements in TRISO fuel that improves safety by resistance to damage from high temperatures. HALEU TRISO fuel could potentially be used in both military and civilian reactors. For civilian use, it would greatly improve efficiency and overall safety. For military use, it could allow the benefits of nuclear power without the security, policy, and treaty challenges of using high enriched fuel.

I agree with you, except for the armored part, most ships would do their best to just not get hit and light weapons would only be a real threat if they were to deploy in littoral zones, however, if it's nuclear powered, then some armor would be needed to protect the reactors. Such ships would be very cool though, heard Russia is building 19000 ton nuclear powered destroyers too, and I think the US wouldn't want to get left behind.

In fairness, big ships make more sense for Japan. They don't need to project power (so aircraft carriers are not strictly necessary), and their coast line is way more concentrated than Russia (so less need to cruise long distances to respond to threats). Having two big old chunks of metal prowling around close to home may not be efficient, but they do need to be dealt with. Any invader needs to to seriously consider them... the fleet in principle theory. With that said; why not Gundam instead? :(

I wonder if other countries will choose to also go for larger warships with tons of missiles, or try to distribute their missiles across a greater number of smaller ships? I also wonder how cost will figure into this. Will a ship of this size, with about 3x the missile capacity of typical destroyers, come in at a lower cost than just having 3 smaller warships?

Well whats the differenc between a frigate and a Destroyer
@arsyadidris6349
@arsyadidris6349 Год назад
@@KennyNGA depends on what kind of destroyers, specifically, what theyre packing. Somthing like the arleigh burke, while not well-endowed in terms of missile count compared to a ticonderoga, is big and beefy enough to operate alone and in open oceans. And japan already has 8 destroyers similar to the burkes. A frigate is considerably smaller (hence less fuel and range and endurance) and is less armed (cant fight for too long). Hence frigates either operate in a battlegroup/flotilla or they patrol relatively near to its home port. Now… as for the kirov and this giant thing japan has plans for, theyre big not because they have to, but because they need to. Kirov packed enough giant missiles in its forward VLS deck to completely swamp a carrier group. That was the doctrine anyways. While this yamato 2.0 is big because of the giant radar it has plans on carrying.
