There should be also a law that must be signed by ALL countries, where it states, that shit that was built and is abandoned must be disassembled to clean up the space. The only leftovers should be sand and wood. No bricks, asphalt, metals etc. I have the feeling that we are in a age where we build a lot of buildings and companies just leave their shit there without cleaning up.

It's a terrific airport and it is so easy to get to by train, bus or car. I had heard it was sinking but didn't realise just how rapidly. Too bad. As the narrator mentioned, it was built in the bay because there is really no space for it on land nearby. Japan is extremely mountainous and most people live in the plains which are very crowded.

Another big factor is that they wanted it to be able to have a 24 hour non stop operation which wasn't possible with an inland option. Also there had been a great deal of protests from the Narita airport works and the land take-overs that it required, something they didn't want to deal with.

The same story about the sinking "Kankuu" (as Kansai airport is known locally) gets recycled over and over again. It sinks a little and the engineers come up with something. It was too politically insensitive to build it on land. Look up the building of Narita airport before the 1964 Olympics for a much more interesting if not heartbreaking Japanese airport story.

I'm no genius but why don't they just build a wall surrounding the airport, stopping the water from flooding the airport? I know aircraft land so the wall wouldn't suit them the best but they could extend the edges and build a wall far enough for aircraft to still approach aswell as the airport not to be flooded?

Do you know what's even more hilarious? Back in 1997-2000, Japan had experiments and tests with a possible fully floating airport. They've built a 1000m Mega-Float floating airport model in Tokyo Bay. And in the end, they came up to the following conclusions: -A number of programs were developed to design a large-scale Mega-Float airport taking into account of hydro-elastic response. Using these programs, test designs of an approximately 5000m long floating airport containing a 4000m-class runway were drafted. -Programs were developed to estimate fluctuations in the radio wave of ILS and PAPI, which are caused by the minute motions due to hydro-elastic response in the Mega-Float airport. These were then analyzed using the 4000m-class test designs. In addition, through the inputting of the analyzed values into a Japan Airlines’ flight simulator, several active pilots made simulated landings at the Mega-Float airport for evaluation. The results of these evaluations indicated the hydro-elastic response have absolutely no affect on landing. -Actual test take-offs and landings carried out on the 1000m Mega-Float in Tokyo Bay enabled various data to be collected and analyzed, but no noticeable difference to airports on land was recorded. Furthermore, the results proved to be even more successful when the pilots who participated in the take-off and landing verification tests also evaluated the Mega-Float runway as being no different to any other airport. -The environmental impact of the undersea noise caused by the take-off and landing of aircraft was evaluated to be at a level that would not affect the habitat of marine life.

The existing Osaka International Airport is located within the city of Osaka and has no room for expansion, making it unable to handle the growing passenger demand. The biggest problem was the serious noise problem caused by take-offs and landings over densely populated residential areas, The noise problem at the time was unimaginably serious, so the authorities decided to build a new offshore airport that would not cause noise problems. The Japanese do not consider the sinking of Kansai Airport to be serious. They believe that it can be overcome. There is no airport that can replace Kansai Airport and plans are being made to expand the airport's functions in order to further increase the number of flights at Kansai Airport.

Raise the steel walls corner to corner below Airport from seabed till it touches to under surface of airport. Fill this cornered regions with High density extremely thick foam . Side walls prevent foam spreading to ocean. Foam raises Airport evenlyfrom seabed. Allow water escape at clearance near seabed as foam expand it displaces water. When foam is expanding make sure it is expanding within cubical form. Making it like Foam bricks supporting Airport. Side walls shall never allow foam to escape. It shall maintain uplifting Airport upward and sinking would stop. Also if Airport raises to initial limit then anchors could be realigned to initial first mark position. This is how one can surely stop Airport sinking. Hope your goodself would pass this comment. To Japan Authority of Airports.

@Lena-vw6ye

@@aangiolochiesa I don't think air transport is going to change that much in 100 years. The technology that is powering those tools will most likely become automated, but the ability to transport a large amount of people and large amount of goods, in the air, has been somewhat stagnant in the last 100 years. The airport itself will probably provide a lot of valuable data from their mess up.

The airport and terminals were designed to sink over time. The buildings are on jacks. It’s still cheaper than buying enough land to build on, esp since Tokyo airport faced decades of protests.

We can separate runway and make runway submersible when high wave days and float on top ocean when operate then each plane had a submersible hangar bay and escalator lift airplane up to runway or bring air plane down to hangar Bay..so less change of being atacked

I would say to build walls around the airport underwater and compacted with the same things that was used to make the lsland but have the walls support on the out side and steel clamps where they connect but those walls be as deep as can be

Why they built reclamation island far from mainland (in this case near rinku town). They have to built long and expensive bridge, adding more cost. Why not close to Rinku town?
@Healitnow
@Healitnow 3 года назад
No matter what this is an engineering marvel, even if it sinks. It is a first try and has already been used for years, but if it is going to sink they should disassemble the structures and move them off the island and add more feet of elevation. This time they have much more information to use in doing it correctly. They have already spent too much on this island just to let it sink and write it off.
@vasopel
@vasopel 3 года назад
they have already build another (smaller) airport across the bay and it looks to be fine so far. anyway..that 20billion cost INCLUDES the money spent in hydraulic jacks in the foundations of all the buildings (to raise them as the island sinks) and also includes the money they have spent so far making sea walls around it, the initial build cost was way way less than 20b. and since it's cheaper to repair it than build another...they have plans to add height on the sea walls and the runaways.
@hunterkiller009
@hunterkiller009 Год назад
They already used those information. The newer island airport such as Kobe and Nagoya chubu has no such problem. In fact, the island next to the original island has no such sinking problem.

The problem is they built it assuming best case scenario sinking not the the worst case scenario had they built it assuming worse case built it higher none of these problems would have happened
