8:20: Even the numbers on the back of their shirts are printed at a 45 degree angle so that they're straight up-and-down when the riders are banking left! They've thought of every detail!

Thrilling video Peter! I raced Karts years ago, still know people who do & a few who are up there in age(near 80) & still get on the track to race & show they still has the skills & passion for the sport & don't let their age hold them back.

Nice video. Possibly worth mentioning that this is one of the very few legal ways to gamble in Japan currently, add also horse racing, and I think you can bet on some bicycle racing and mini powerboats. This isn't too far from me, so I might ride up and check it out one day.

these are incredible. everything designed specifically for these races down the strange offset handlebars designed to keep your hands level with those huge leans. at least I think that's what they are designed that way for. this is freaking cool

yes its similar to flat tracking here in the US but they dont get their bikes that low. Thats insane how low they go nice job on the camera work to capture that

Thanks for the Nostalgia. Used to watch this from outside the fence near Funabashi everytime my family went to the funabashi racecourse flea market. Never knew whats going on but you can't go wrong with a bunch of bikes racing each other in an oval.

Outstanding, Peter! Attaching a preview of coming attractions to entice the huddled masses starving for entertainment is a shrewd ploy. Likewise, a 'TO BE CONTINUED' two-part episode might become a hot topic around water coolers everywhere. "Can the doctors and nurses at Jackrabbit Hospital stop jumping each other's bones long enough to save our hero from an overripe case of swamp arse or must he pin his hopes on the cool breezes of distant autumn? These bikes are a masterpiece of engineering, don't let looks fool you on that track they are faster than a moto GP bike by a long way . Great video i love this style of racing it is unique to japan

@Carter Fisher what he means, they are faster on this track than motogp's. motogp are faster on straight for sure, but they had to lean all the time which gonna reduce their top speed, while these flatbikes definitely means to reach the very top speed on this oval track.

They used dirt tracks back in the early days, but the government deemed them too dangerous and banned them in the 60's.

Reminds me of speedway and flat track racing combined. I love that the highest ranked rider needs to work his way through the field. F1 should do this. It might make them more interesting. I'd love to see these races in person. Maybe when I retire, I'll move to Japan and be one of these of guys.

6:08 that "handle" is not for push-starting the bike. The rider hooks his/her right thigh under that peg to keep them on the bike. The bike is push-started from behind by an assistant.

I was playing Tatsunoko VS. Capcom on the Wii for the first time in awhile. Since the last time I played the game, I became aware of your channel. I had no idea that you voiced Frank West for the game. In the game’s gallery section you can play all of the character’s voice clips. It’s like having a bizarre Peter Von Gomm soundboard. Anyway, it’s really cool that you were a part of what I consider to be the best Wii game.

That's cool, bit like Speedway here in the U.K, It's run on a shorter dirt track and they pretty much 'drift' around it spraying dirt everywhere from the rear tyre.

Auto Race would be the correct terminology in Japan as a motorcycle in Japan is called an "Autobai" or auto for short. While until recently cars were called jidousha, or kuruma. Now they say "Automobiru". When I was a kid living in Nerima, Tokyo we'd visit our cousins in Urawa, Saitama ken and go watch the horse races bat the track located there. We didn't go to gamble (too young, and ignorant), we just loved racing, and horses so a perfect combo. I had a friend who used to race in these tiny speedboats that people would gamble on. Last I heard he was propositioned by the Yakuza to throw a race which he refused which really pissed of the Yakuza, and had him scared. I lost touch with him 20 years ago. I hope the Yakuza didn't get him. Great vid, thank you!

Theres a video of this type of bike against two superbikes and 2 super moto bikes. The auto racer bike started in the back and easily won the race by at least a half lap. These are amazing bikes.

The 73-year-old racer is a former great player and has won many titles. The rank is decided by the grade, and the player of the lower rank replaces the newcomer, and he always maintains the middle rank or higher even at this age.

It's called Speedway in the UK, but it's done on a different track surface, dirt/cinder and it was really big in the 1920s and 30s.

Yes, roots of this kind of racing certainly sprouted off of Speedway, still a fairly big sport in the U.K. A detail here is that there is no sliding to help in the cornering and the engines here have recirculating lubricating oil, not total loss like with speedway bikes which drop in onto the track as it exits the engine.

I would love to see a keirin vid as well. That would be super kool. I think the closest ones are in tachikawa and omiya.i thought it was interesting how some of the rules and looks of moto racing are similar to Japanese keirin.

Things I noticed. Stands were nearly empty. The offset handlebars. The angled numbers on the back of the jersey so they would be straight up and down during the race. Unlike NASCAR it's all racing, not a bunch of yellow flag time filler. I think it would be pretty cool to see this live.

you know I am a Harley rider with my husband, he has found a way even with me to ride on two wheels all across the USA east to west north to south. We love our bike and we have a trike too. It has a 350 horse power engine, that is my baby. so yes very kool sweetie. Hits a soft spot in my heart.

@@DanArnets1492 "Speedway" is paved and 'flat tracks' are dirt (and usually bigger). Both use no brakes bikes but there's shifting on a flat track with speeds over 100 mphp

Unfortunately the racing greyhounds were treated like crap not unlike modern day horse racing so glad it was shut down. Moto race events in your video look cool though 👍

There is a video of 1 of these racing modern day road bikes on this kind of track. The road bikes were given a head start and they got stomped. It was hilarious!

This is the Japan version of speedway motorcycle racing. It is much better on a dirt track at a 1/8 of a mile. Bigger engines but still basically the same thing. The handlebars are bent but can still only be turned to the right. Also no brakes.

Speedway racing was banned by the government in the 60s, so it developed into racing on tarmac. The bikes are similar, only with a slightly larger engine (600cc Suzuki twin v 500cc methanol fuelled single) and another gear (two v one), with no brakes or rear suspension and shaved triangular profile tyres. The riders have to be 5’10” or less, and under 9st6lbs (60kg), live in dorms the night before the race, go by nicknames and get prize money upto $1m per race!
