Japan needs a serious overhaul of laws surrounding housing discrimination.

The public housing in Tokyo makes Australia’s public housing look like five star hotels. Three months without a working shower? That’s so sad. With japans aging population things will only get worse.

The state of the public housing compound is absolutely disgusting, I would have expected more of Japan since they are responsible to maintain these. Thank you for showing that Japan is not all neat and beautiful like it's often shown. It is awful not to care enough for seniors since they are the ones who are responsible for building up the country the way it is, hard workers. A real shame.

The toy shop owner should convert that to a grocery store. The people in that area need food, not toys. And if he makes the prices affordable, he could expand and maybe even open up another location.

DISGUSTING!! How the elderly are treated! They should be respected and theyre much more reliable to be on list first cause they will make regular payments than the young university students the elderly will live there permanently NOT like students who will leave after courses.

This is surprising me since I thought Japanese culture was about honor and respect. How can the elderly be treated this way?

This was very good. I have lived in Japan for 20 years but still find it hard to understand the TV news and TV documentaries. I am 65 years old and l live with my Japanese wife in her house. The house is getting older and I fear it will need a new roof and other major repairs soon. I don't know if it will be worth fixing up. It would be nice to move into a senior apartment but I fear that would be very expensive. My stepdaughter has moved far away and I don't think we can expect her to take care of us in the future. It is sad that Japan is aging so rapidly.

If you can afford it you should fix your roof. You only live once, enjoy it while you can.

My grandparents lived with my parents until their death. My parents live with us. Wife and I will do the same with our elder son. Value of family and togetherness has no substitute. Sooner people understand facts of life, the better.

My daughter’s college friend has no ambition in life because he says he is responsible for taking take of his parents until they die. I hope that you treat your elder son well and let him also have a life.

@@ronica2623 We don't treat elders in family and burden. They don't hinder in anybody's life or ambition. Some people always come up with excuses for not being successful in life and they blame it all on family members.

@@littlestar5737 I’m happy for you that this works for your family. Point I was trying to make is that it so doesn’t work for every family and this is a fact of life. Best to you and your family.

This is disgraceful, yet companies are offering empty properties to overseas foreigners to buy Akiyas. Plus the overall population are mostly older people, wow, I really thought they took care of their elders. 😢

in general, problems do not resolve themselves: problems are situations which must be transformed into different situations by external agents (governments, legislators, specialized personnel, etc., etc., etc.). moreover, these people are nevertheless part of a larger group of people (society) to which they are linked by various links which are not strictly of an economic or financial order: ethnic, cultural, linguistic, historical, social, economic links also if they spent part of their lives working and being productive for the good of all. the Japanese government should not be ashamed of taking inspiration from countries whose social policies are more effective than its own. Japan has been in economic stagnation for at least 30 years, resulting in unemployment and a lost generation.

Of course, no landlord wants to be responsible for very elderly tenants, to have to evict them when they are senile or bedridden. Caring for aged parents are the responsibility of children since ancient times.

Sadly, too many of the selfish children today do not feel that way. Out of three children, I have only one who loves me enough to care about me, visit me, calls me, is considerate and kind, and has offered for me to live with him when I am ready and feel I can no longer live alone. The other two have abandoned me and are very mean and say such nasty, cruel things to me. No child should treat their mother that way. I thank God every day that I am still able to take care of myself in my own nice apartment, drive and shop, do all the things I need to do at age 85. I like living alone, being independent, and dread the time I have to give up my lifestyle and move in with my son. He has his own life and problems and health worries, I hate to be a burden for him, but I will do what I have to do if and when the time comes.

So sad and disappointing that Japan treats their elderly this way. I also know that they put tremendous pressure on school age kids and the parents are into all of the shallow "brand " clothing.

Shame, shame on the Japanese. My mother is from Osaka and I lived there for 6 years. The Japanese used to value their seniors. I realize society has changed as children grow up and move far away for work, so the government needs to do a better job of looking after its seniors.

Yeah, just saying there shouldn't be age discrimination isn't a coherent policy. Easily, seniors cost much aggregately to home owners than younger people because the former are not only unable to pay as much, but are so much more likely to die, resulting in easily tens of thousands in costs. Idiots in the comments just can't think, since it's made pretty clear in the video.

It's not for me to say how Japan runs it's country, I don't contribute to it and so am not able to effect it in anyway. I will say this, although there are laws to protect many discriminations here in the U.S. The issue with elderly without sufficient housing, income and care are a problem here as well. The are invisible to the world. Pick one elder near you and do what you can to help.

Young Japanese people need to consider leaving their country before they get old. Or buy an akiya as a Japanese citizen & live there when they are old. Don't wait till they are old. When a country only prefers young people until 35, young people have very little time to plan to leave & must start thinking out of the box early.
