Jigokudani Monkey Park is located in the valley of the Yokoyu River, which originates in Shiga-Kogen within the Joshinetsu-Kogen National Park in northern Nagano Prefecture. This place, surrounded by steep cliffs and constantly emitting smoke and steam, people began to call Hell's Valley. Here in Jigokudani, at an altitude of 850 meters above sea level, it gets quite cold in winter. The snow layer reaches a thickness of more than a meter, and the minimum temperature drops below -10℃. The environment here is as harsh as that of the Shimokita Peninsula, which is considered the northernmost point of habitat for non-human primates.
